In this video, I run through the process of installing a new braze on style hanger onto a Cannondale SuperSIX EVO frame. The process is the same as many other bikes that use rivets to secure the hanger to the frame.

Joey, great vid. Thank you. You mention the rivets are SS, where can i get a dozen of so? Also, my hanger stretched only one rivet due to the chain wrapping around the small ring and binding against the frame. The other two rivets seemed still very tight. A borescope ($77 amazon) inspection of the inside of of carbon seat tube showed that the carbon around the stretched rivet hole was torn up and frayed. I was afraid that a new rivet would not hold well, so I fished and finagled a very small SS machine screw through the hanger and inside the tube, added a matching "mini-fender" washer and hex nut wetted with Loctite. The fender washer completely covered the damaged area around the hole and upon tightening the hanger became very snug. I have not (yet) replaced the other two hanger rivets as they seemed to be ok at the time. But I can see a day when they will need to be replaced too.

First of all thanks for the video, when I faced with a similar issue it confirmed my idea how to begin the work, so it gave me confidence. :) I'm doing a very similar repair on my wife's bike, the only difference is that the hanger snapped, didn't fell off. I removed the rivets but have no idea how to remove the broken hanger as it's still glued to the frame. I have a good grip on it but still not moving. Hammer? Heat? More sweat? Any idea? Thanks :)

Dude. I’m doing that exact same project. Hilarious. The only hangar I found was one in the UK. It’s taking forever to get to the US.
@sdbinder Жыл бұрын
I found that by taking a pin punch and punch out the center of the rivet.

After punching out the center. The head comes out with very light pressure using a 1/8 “ drill bit.

Yeah, same thing here. We’re a Cannondale dealer, but they won’t sell the hanger anymore. I guess too many dealers messed up frames attempting to install them, so the only option is to sent your frame back to Cannondale to have a new one installed by them. The owner of this bike sourced the hanger from the UK i believe and it took a while.

Great video of excellent work! I also have a Cannondale, with the same issue. I will not attempt such a repair though! I never use the smaller chain ring, being that I live in Florida, no hills. I'm surprised they don't use threaded allen screws instead.

Thanks for taking the time to comment! Sometimes small bolts required to thread things like cable stops and hangers can become a nightmare if they get seized into the frame. It happens a lot with folks who ride indoors on a trainer, Zwifting it up in the winter. Not so much a problem in Florida, but that sea salt air can do similar damage as well... Sweat can do some serious corrosion causing damage that doesn't get talked about much. That's how this one failed in the first place.

Next time keep your frame clean. you can also way the area for added protection or spray occational with WD40 or similar in the area. at least post washing.

Do you know where I can find one for the 2012 BMC SLR02?
@JoeyMesa Жыл бұрын
Sorry but no. Maybe a shop is selling some new old stock on eBay?

Where did you find the hangar?
@JoeyMesa Жыл бұрын
The customer found it somewhere online. I think I saw some available in the UK, but I know they're hard to get at the moment.

would it better to drill out the rivits??
@JoeyMesa Жыл бұрын
It depends. In this case, once the hanger broke off, the rivets were loose, so they tend to just spin within the frame once a drill bit digs in and starts to remove material. If the hanger cracked, which is very common where the derailleur bolts on, drilling the rivets would be the way to go. I should have mentioned why I was using the Dremel tool instead of drilling in this particular case, so thanks for pointing that out!

A lot of people say not to mix stainless and aluminum. I'm surprised they didn't put Al rivets in the kit.
@JoeyMesa Жыл бұрын
This particular application takes a lot of stress, so I just don't see an aluminum rivet holding up under normal use.

Damn Joey, is there anything you can’t do bike-wise? Good job! (Be writing soon about my problem.)

For indoor training, try a frame cover. DA

I've been saying this to folks for years.... For getting this and many other sweaty trainer related repairs fixed, find a good mechanic...DA...
