In this video, I'll show you how to replace a shower arm. My handheld shower head broke and when I was replacing it I realized I need to replace the shower arm as well. It's a very easy fix that you can do it yourself and save some money.

Solid video but I wouldn't mind if you took more time to show further steps such as the Teflon tape and reminding folks to shut off the water.

Great video. Thanks .. Wat about if the arm is tight already but not pointing straight down? I'm afraid to tighten it more for fear of breaking it.

@@RafaelGrossmann I would losen it until it's straight. If you put enough teflon tape on it then you don't need to over tighten it. Sorry was going to respond right away but got side tracked.

@@RafaelGrossmann well make sure you didn’t add too much Teflon tape on it also. Maybe that’s why it feels like you are tightening too tight so soon?

As long as no one will be messing with the shower valve u don’t need to turn off the main water supply valve. But it always good to be safe and turn off the main valve. I did it without turning off the main valve and was fine.

What if it starts to get tight with 3/4 of the way to go to bring it in the down direction? It's loose if I leave it in the down, but am afraid to over tighten if I keep going another 3/4 turn. Any suggestions?

It’s kind of hard to tell. U kind of have to feel it. Obviously you don’t want it too loose because you will have a leak. Maybe do a test run into a bucket and check for leaks before finishing it off.

Can I just turn off the water from faucet, or I need to turn off from mainline?

Turning off the faucet should be just fine.

The only thing that worries me is the pipe connecting to the shower arm. What if it's damaged (the threads) in the process of removing the shower arm. Do you have to tear down the whole wall in order to fix it?

So usually the damage can be done installing the threaded pipe but if the pipe was properly threaded then removing it would not damage it and you should be fine. Now as far as fixing damaged threads, I think there should be away to retap them without the entire tear down but I’m not 100% sure. Your local plumber should know the answer to that.

You can but if ur shower head valve is off and u don’t plan on turning it on during installation then you should be fine. That’s how I did mine.

Mine completely broke off and I’m struggling to get the old arm out of the pipe in the wall, any tips??

try to use needle nose pliers and see if you can unscrew it by hand. or possibly use a small hack saw and cut it in half inside the pipe. This might take a some time. Otherwise, you may need to get a plumber if you can't figure out how to do it yourself. I'm sure plumbers will have some special technique or tool they use.

I’m trying to replace mine right now but my house is very old and I’m scared that the shower arm (thats new) won’t be able to fit in the old one

How old is your house? These shower arms are pretty universal so it should be able to fit without any problems unless there is damage of some sort. Does it look the same at least?

How do I know what size arm to get?

They are all pretty standard sizes, they have a bit longer once’s if you want your shower head to stick out further away from the wall. You can also measure ur existing one and try to buy the same size.

How do you know which end goes into the wall , I've yet to find a video of someone explaining the different lengths and which end goes into the wall A shower arm could be just one inch difference before the bend

I’m 99% sure that both ends are the same threads so it doesn’t matter which one. Typically though the longer end goes into the wall so that the shower head is pushed further out from the wall.

What would you recommend to do if the shower arm won't come off with channel locks?

Umm 🤔. What about taking a small drill bit as big as a screwdriver and drilling a hole thru the arm then sticking the screw driver maybe a longer one so you have a big moment arm and try turning it that way. Basically you getting a better grip on the pipe compared to the channel locks.

@@TheTerminator1919 No, I think that should work. Believe the arm is made out of brass so it should be a fairly soft material. Plus it's pretty thin so it should be fine. Just hold it firmly and be careful cuz the drill bit and possibly the arm might get hot.

It prevents from water seeping through the threads and prevents from leaks.

How do you know there isn't a leak behind the wall? I'm in the process of adding a shower arm, but i can't seem to get rid of a tiny leak at the connection.

Well, usually the hole is big enough to where you can see the connecting pipe. you could stick a piece of paper towel in there and see if gets wet before sealing that hole.

Yes it usually helps however if u keep your shower valve in the off position then I’m pretty sure you will be fine.

Soooo why is water still shooting out from the back of the shower head! Tried all three adapters found the gerber and water shoots out from the back of it 🙄

Probably not enough of Teflon tape used on the threads.

When you close the main water valve in the house. Just open the sink valve and drain the water out to remove the pressure from your line. Once the water stops running open the shower valve and you shouldn't have any water there maybe a few drops.
