Shower arm Removal Tips
As part of your shower head pipe replacement, you have to remove the stuck shower arm with smart shower arm removal techniques. We are not using any special shower arm removal tool, just a screwdriver and a pair of pliers or Robogrips are all you need for fast shower arm removal to break free that stuck shower stem. You'll have to be really careful using only rotational wrenching on the pipe or you'll be looking for a broken shower arm extractor after your shower pipe broke off in the wall. You don't want to end up with broken shower arm removal adding precious time to your project.
Shower arm installation tips
For installing your new shower arm extension pipe make sure to wrap both ends of the shower arm with Teflon tape to avoid a shower arm leaking behind the wall situation. the threaded end of your shower arm extender is metal and so metal threads of your shower arm going into the wall pipe need to have the Teflon tape to seal them. After that installing the shower heads is pretty simple.

Thank you for your help!! I just finished getting my shower arm out thanks to your video. I didn't have the tools that you do but I did improvise by using a long drill attachment that is used for drilling small holes for planting. It is very long and gave a good distant to improve tork. I only had a small pair of plyers but I was able to keep a good grip at the base. I was using all my strength to just give a rotational force, like you said, but my hand did start to fatigue. I was about to go get some lubercant when my son-in-law came in and saw what I was doing. So I showed him your video and he immediately stepped in and in one try the arm twisted off. So I could not have done this without your help.

Your truck worked like a charm. I used a vice grips and shoved the handle of my channel lock pliers up the arm. I did have to spray with pb blaster too. It came off, unforgiving a small piece of the threaded pipe arm was left in the copper 90. I sprayed it with pb blaster again and let it sit for 10 minutes, got a needle nose in there enough to grab a piece of the threads and was able to peel it out. I was completely lost until I saw your video. Now I'm subscribing and going to share with friends.

Three tools and it's out...the key is creating SOLID CONTACT between the pipe and your wrench or plier device. Start by hitting the interior nut with the silicone that Jeff highlights....hit it with silicone three times. In between, have some beer. Next, (here's the magic my friends), find a rubber glove from your household cleaning supplies (thinner the better but I don't think it matters really for this approach). Wrap it around the pipe to create solid contact against the pipe (i.e similar to buying your grandmother that round floppy rubberized disc that helps her open her whiskey bottle easier). Next grab your VISE GRIP (in the hand not holding the beer), and set it to firmly grab the pipe until it won't slide (remember, there is rubber glove between pipe and vise grip). Now, following Jeff's instructions, grab a long screwdriver, end of pipe wrench, or anything else to insert into the open pipe end for the additional turning leverage you need (as explained by Jeff). Quick swig of the beer for good luck, now apply a powerful turn, and viola, your beer didn't get warm since you just successfully removed that pesky pipe in less than one minute (assuming you started counting after your found the recommended tools). Common mistakes: 1. you put the glove on your hand, thereby failing....good news, you did get to have a beer. Try again (including the beer) 2. you try to insert the beer (assuming a bottle) into the pipe for leverage....result? immediate trip to the hospital 3. you spray the silicone on the wrench or pipe, thereby eliminating any chance of creating grip on the pipe. 4. Your significant other points out that you took the last household cleaning glove and now have created a trip to Target, where in some States, you cannot buy beer.

I tried a wrench and a screwdriver and nothing. It moves, but I feel like i'm breaking it. Kind of goes up and down, side to side but not rotaitional as It needs. I stop because I feel like it's going to bust. I need to get this thing off. Should I try longer screwdriver and robogrips as you suggested? Also, I don't see any tape on there (I just moved in this house). Both showers are pain to remove. Obviously both have been on for a LONG time. Other shower even has a gasy smell when it runs. I cant even get the shower head off that thing (FYI I have removed many shower heads before, but that other shower is impossible)

Great video Jeff! I had a shower arm I thought would be on there until the end of time. I purchased the tools you mentioned in the video and it came right off. One question, should the new shower arm be just hand-tightened in with a healthy dose of plumbers tape or wrench-tightened?
@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff 4 жыл бұрын
John, don't wrench tighten it because you will cut scratches into the pipe. Once you thread it in tight by hand, stick a screwdriver inside the pipe and tighten it the rest of the way with the screwdriver. If you absolutely must use pliers, protect the pipe with tape or a cloth.

Jeff, is it possible for that solid brass 90° piece (that is sweated on to the copper water line) to crack simply on its own over time? This video was fantastic, from the humor to the physics. It's clear that you really know what you're talking about, and you did a great job conveying your knowledge to your viewers. Unfortunately I've got a pivot ball that seems to be permanently mated to the end of my shower arm pipe, so I can't put a decent lever in there. I think I'm going to try putting the thickest possible allen key in the pivot ball opening and try to use that for a little extra torque. after about 10 minutes of swearing, I googled it and your vid was the first one I watched. turns out I had the exact plyers you had plus the massive screwdriver. taped up the shower arm and was ready to give it all my force (rotationally of course) and it loosened perfectly. I’m always open to learning, THANK YOU 🙏🏻

I love you Jeff! This video is SOOO informative! I'm certain I can do this myself; and what a coincidence that I am installing the same type of showerhead (the Delta In2ition - only mine is in bronze). Thanks so much for this video and all the very valuable info that comes along with it.

Thought I was gonna have to spend big bucks hiring a plumber when I tried to replace my old shower head and arm when the arm wouldn't budge. Watched your video and VOILA ! The old arm came right off just as you demonstrated. It had been installed with too much tape and plumbers putty too- after 20 years it was all kinda hardened and gunked up. Thanks for the super well done tip!

Thank you for the advice! I purchased a shower arm to replace an old ball joint for a new shower head in the guest bathroom. Unfortunately for me and my small hands, the arm was stuck in the wall. I had to think how would "MacGyver" do this! So, first, I use wd-40 to spray the pipe and waited it out while I watch youtuve videos on techniques to use to get the arm off. I found your video, which help tremendously! Although, I was afraid I wouldn't have enough strength to twist the arm, your video technique help me a lot! Finally, after 3 hours, wd-40 and your video - Eureka! Thank you! Your Video was great!

I can't believe I didn't think of putting something in it! Super helpful after I turned it way too tight. Only thing to remember I didn't do at first, whatever long object you put in there, make sure to put it ALL THE WAY in there! I didn't have the pliers he had so I used a rubber glove to hold it with. Thank you so much!

This is a great tutorial, and I know exactly why you are saying to be very careful in unthreading the shower arm. The shower arm in my bathroom was loose, and there was water leaking behind the wall. Upon trying to take the shower head off, the solder connection of the shower arm snapped off, and the remaining part of the solder connection was stuck behind the wall. Luckily, my son is a plumber, so what he had to do is use an extractor to loosen the broken connection. It to almost an hours to accomplish because there was also a lot of rust back there. The good thing is that being it was my son who performed the job, it cost me no money. 😀

Hey Jeff..just wanted to report another success thanks to your helpful vid. Rather than start right in, I decided to go with the PB blaster which I have used on other projects with great success. I sprayed liberally on the joint through the wall opening & let it work it's magic overnight. The next morning I utilized my long channel lock handle & vice grips to carefully break the seal & remove the old shower arm. Sure enough there was no Teflon tape present so that explains why it was badly seized. Thanks Jeff for your help & expertise. I was dreading a huge plumbing bill if I had twisted that connection apart! PS: Happy New Year to you & all your followers from Alberta, Canada!
