Axe handles are tapered, narrower on bottom of head, I think

Nice job man! My 6lb sledge handle busted a while back and just bought a replacement handle from Ace Hardware. Does it matter which side of the head faces up or down? One of the holes is tapered and I already drilled out the old wood.

Put the large hole side away from the body of the handle, that way when you drive the wedge in, the top of the handle expands to fit the taper, and prevents the head from coming off.

Would it be ok to just burn off the handle?

I think it would be ok. Might want to clean up the hammer head and paint it afterward.
