There is no need to shut off the main water to replace a tub spout only. If you do not have a set screw you should be able to grab onto the spout with both hands and turn counterclockwise. Turn firmly and consistently. If you try to use tools to twist the old one off you run the risk of possibly harming the copper line inside the wall. Tools can be used to gain leverage but just be careful. You don't want to end up replacing more than you bargained for. Hope that helps, have a great day!

If you run the shower, won't it leak into the base of the spout and behind the wall since there was no sealing done there?

Most tub spouts just screw off. And there is a way to change the parts for the diverter but they are hard to find and I would just replace the whole thing if it isn't working correctly. Hope that helps Jaime.

Good question garne2t. No it won't. There is a rubber gasket inside tub spouts of this style that seals tightly around the copper pipe and keeps water from going there.

in this video, i see you have a white extension piece. where can i buy that extension piece that you take off/ what is it called. the replacement spout i have needs an extension of 5 inches from the wall. your video shows you removing the extension piece that i need. any information would be greatly appreciated. thanks!!

Screw on spouts can be hard o remove. I was able to remove mine buy heating up the spout with a hair dryer.

What can I do if I have an old twist on spout and the copper pipe broke off inside of it? Twist on an extension of solder a new one on? There is only about a half inch of threaded pipe sticking through my wall

I have a tub spout with a flat head screw on the side. I still can't remove even with flathead. is it a set screw or is it another way to remove?

Sorry I misunderstood your previous question garnet2t. I always try to answer based on my personal knowledge and experience. So that being said I have personally not experienced any issues with needing to seal around the base of the tub spout which is why I didn't include that in my video. Sealing it won't obviously hurt anything and a simple bead of color matched caulking will do the trick. I'm not saying "don't" I'm just saying my experience it,s not necessary. Will replacing the faucet take care of the leak coming from it? We have the type of tub/shower that does not have separate hot and cold water handles (it has one big knob that pulls out and turns depending on whether we want hot or cold water). Or do we have to replace the big knob?

can you provide the spout spec? I have one at home looks like exactly that one in the video, but don't know the brand.

That sounds like the controls are bad. The spout is just to direct water. If it drips while running the shower then changing it will fix that but if it leaks all the time you need a new set of seals or a new cartridge depending on your model. Hope that helps. Have a great day!

5:16 ... You want to leave that caulk on there, so you have a water-tight wall, then, you don't need any caulk externally, around the spout

My spout leaks from the wall, like, some water comes out of the back of the spout when i turn on the water. do i just get a replacement or do i have to do something else?

my new american standard chrome spout has no set screw with it and how do we know if spout needs more or less pipe to mount? as mine now, a gerber, leaks! - Im thinking whoever installed it might have to long a pipe in it now? - which isnt allowing it to stop? how can we tell with the old one and then again for new how long etc ? for stop ? and or mounting ? - thanks

Are all the spouts twist off?? The lever that diverts the water to the shower head is stuck... Is there a way to fix that or should I just replace the spout??

What about the space around the pipe where it comes through the wall? I was thinking the water would run down the shower wall and get into that space.

Ok I was trying to twist my old tub spout off and the copper pipe broke. So now I am sol I guess I don't know what to do I'm trying to figure out how to replace the pipe with out having to tell my landlord. UGH! I'm so frustrated we live in an old apartment that doesn't have a shower so I was trying to replace the old spout with a diverter that has an place to attach a handheld shower. Now I just screwed it all up! Help~

My spout doesn't come off either. Probably it's just on there tight but this is a pain in the ass, time to call the plumber.

Let me ask you sir, is this completely legal of what is going on here? This is very troubling what is going on here in this video...

To long of a pipe will make the spout stick out from the shower wall but won't cause leaking. If it is leaking when you run the water it has a bad seal. If it leaks all the time the water valve itself is the issue. As far as how long to make the pipe on the new install, the directions should say how long it should stick out.
