if you have a 5 wire line coming into the back of your thermostat, you are wired for heating and AC . Here is what they mean R - Terminal that is connected to a low voltage transformer for controls R is split into Rh or Rc depending on your thermostat, these are usually jumpered together Rh (heat) and Rc (cool) W - is energized when the controls are calling the furnace for heat Y - is energized when the controls are calling the AC unit for cool G - is energized when unit is calling for Fan

Thank you for your great video! My fiance and I have a house with old wiring. We were quite confused with Honeywell's installation instructions. We were about to give up when we logged on to KZfaq and found your video using the keyword "Replace old thermostat with digital". We were able to install both thermostats in about an hour-and-a-half, with neither one of us having any electrical experience. And guess what? She installed the first thermostat by herself! Thanks a million!!

Many thanks for the video. My mom's floor furnace wasn't turning on. My brother would remove the old mercury based thermostat control from the wall undo the wires and touch them together to make it come on. So, I said instead of calling the heating and cooling repairman, let's go get a new digital one from Home Depot. Found your you tube video, and voila - we replace the old one with the new one, and mom's furnace is working again. Again, thanks for taking the time to make the video.

My House has 2 Wires for the old Analog Thermostat White & Black ! So I'll count the Black likely+ as the Red + & the White as W and Give it a Try!! Thanks For your nice Calm instructions!! Very Refreshing !! :)

I bought a Honeywell programmable thermostat to replace an ancient 2 wire analog mercury unit and the manual was not very clear where to hook up each wire. I tried a few wiring combinations, no luck. Followed your example, heat working! Thanks for taking the time to share your information, save me a lot of frustration.

Thank you so much! I'm a clueless college student with a widowed mother that needed a new thermostat. The directions with the one I bought told me to call an electrician if there weren't 4 wires but instead I googled it, found this video and 5 minutes later we have a new thermostat! Yeah!

Good job! If you installed a new electronic thermostat with a display, a word of warning: If you did not hook up a wire to the C terminal or if your new thermostat does not have a C terminal then you probably had to put batteries in it. Make sure you change them one a year or you may be in trouble in the winter time if the batteries die!

AwkwardHamster, Just wanted to say thanks for making this video. The instructions that came with my digital thermostat stated to pull the jumper for Rh and Rc if there are only two wires. Nope, turns out one of the wires was originally white that had discolored over the years, and the red had darkened to a maroon. Configuration was exactly like your basement's. You saved me time and frustration.

Thanks, this video is exactly what I needed. Does anyone know if a "burner" as he mentioned in the video is the same as the boiler? And can you just turn off the furnace switch to do this, or does the power need to be out regardless? I just had a new electrical panel put in and the switch is labelled "Boiler" just wondering...thanks :)

Good question. I don't know. I think those are heat pumps with battery backups. I haven't used those before.

AwkwardHamster, thanks for the video. Basically you have the white wire for both heating and cooling right ? you've shown us how to heat. If you have to cool ( start the AC ) do you manually remove and put the white wire on Y ? How can we achieve both cooling and heating with only red and white wires.

with a 2 wire setup, it's either having an open or closed curcuit (on or off). I don't remember if I published my AC video but I think it was 3 or 4 wires. the new unit that will replace the old unit should have a manual. They're pretty details and will cover different wiring setups.

I have three wires coming up from the basement to my old Honeywell thermostat, I assume one is a ground but you only used two, can I leave one wire off safely ?

You have to use all 3 wires. I don't think I can explain it in 500 characters or less. The wires should be color coded. If not, looked at where it was connected on the old thermostat & labeled the wires using the stickers that came with the new one. See if the new thermostat supports the 3 wires. If it doesn't, get a thermostat that supports pumps. I know for Honeywell they have a number in their manual you can call if you have questions.

Hi Dear, Thanks for your Demo Video. However, I have one old non-brand ( SECO TM 200 H - A) 2 -wire thermostat. But the color is Red and looks like Black or Grey I cannot understand because no letter marking is there. How should I put in a Emerson Sensi WiFi thermostat. Where this black/grey should go. Sensi only have RC, RH, O/B, Y, G, W/E & C another panel L, Y2 & w2. Please help me to install correctly.

+S Mollah I haven't seen Emerson but 2 wire systems are easy to setup because it's either open or close a circuit. Even if you reverse it, it's still open/close.

I think so. Two wires is easy and straight forward. You either close the circuit or open the circuit.

Is it possible to turn the power off to the furnace/thermostat in the winter and still avoid bursting the pipes when trying to replace the thermostat?

Yes, it didn't take me long to change the thermostat. Pipes don't freeze that fast. If the room is at 60 degrees, it'll take more than an hour for the pipes to drop to a freezing point.

I have a furnance that has 2 thermostats. One is used to adjust the heat and the other one shuts the furnance off when it reaches the programmed temp. I installed the Honeywell digital RH6530. I ran a new wire from the thermostat that shuts the furnance off to the new thermo and it works. My question is, I wanna get rid of the thermo that I use to set the temp so it's all done from one thermostat that would be the Honeywell. How do I do that?

I have an issue. I tried replacing an old analog thermostat (2 wired), with a newer programmable Honeywell thermostat on an old Coleman presidential 2 on my mobile home. Once I switched the power on on the furnace, the ac started blowing. No matter what function I changed on the new thermostat the ac would not turn off. Any suggestions?

+jose vidal I have the same Coleman presidential in my mobile home. I put the white wire in the W and the red to the jumper between the R and Rc and it works. I had originally put the white wire in the W2 and it didn't work. After I watched this video and moved the white wire it is working fine. I'm thinking that the thermostat is set to AC instead of heat. Thanks AwkwardHamster for posting this video as I found it very helpful since all other info I found online had more than just the two wires.

+Rhonda Russell Hey, I just remembered that there's an AC/Heat switch on the furnace--the thermostat doesn't determine whether the AC kicks in. Flip the switch on the furnace and the heat should kick in.

I have two analog timers one for water and one for heating the trouble is one is fsster than the other so setting the time together can be hard can i install a digital timer to replace the two clocks and will it control both clocks

Im about to graduate out of a hvac trade school and im not the most educated..this is what I know G-goes to your fan relay.. not ground!!! Y=goes to your condensing unit R(Rc&h with a jumper)=goes to your 24v side of transformer W=goes to your heating system C=(common)to the condensing unit

Mine are wrapped with fabric old ones and don't have the color coded is it a problem if I guesstimate by plugging them to the thermostat

Hi. Even if mine were the same color wires, it wouldn't have mattered because it's only on/off. It'll still work even if I switched the terminals. If it was 3 or more wires, then that's a different story.

+Patrick Michels Two wire systems are easier because it's either open circuit or closed circuit. Even if I reversed my wires it'll still work.

Nest has a very easy tool to tell us if the wires we have, based on the color, works with their thermostat. I don’t want to just say yes because I learn more after talking to my gas company they advised against it because my home uses a heat pump, baseboard heater. The technician said the smart thermostat won’t be able to draw enough voltage to switch all the heating zone valves on or off. He said it’s different if I had forced hot air instead of baseboard.

there really is no need for a bong (ground) in low voltage wiring, the green is for fan control.
