Do you want to learn how to replace an old thermostat? Maybe yours is from 1970 and has seen better days (nothing against the 70s it produced Star Wars and the Godfather!!!)
This week's video is about replacing your old thermostat with a new programmable version.
This is totally something you can do yourself and I wanted to share a few tips that have served me well.
The thermostat in this video isn't expensive ($25) and can be used for a heating & cooling system.
Two big tips I have would be
1. to use vise grips to hold the thermostat wires in place (so they don't fall into the wall) and
2. to place some blue painter's tape on the wall to collect drywall dust when you drill the holes for the thermostat base
Check out my video for all the details on how to replace an old thermostat

Thank you so much for making this video! I am NOT handy at all. Our 15+year old thermostat died. I decided to buy a new one.Your video gave me the courage to tackle the task myself. I was able to successfully replace mine! Your video is clear, concise, detailed with step by step instructions. You added a list of materials you used to get the job done. I followed your advice though and put the stickers on based on the old wire configuration (black wire went into pin for yellow wire and red wire went in RC pin). My only feedback is to include the removal one or two of the original wires for those of us who are completely not handy and have never worked with wires before. I know you edited it out as it seems very straight forward. But I think it is helpful - even if it means we are watching you use the precision screwdriver to remove the wires that are connected to the pin.

Thanks for the video. The old thermostat I have is a vertical one, and the new one to replace it lays horizontal so it looks like I will have to drill two new holes, and plug the other ones as they will be showing at the top and bottom of the new base plate for the new thermostat. I guess I will have to twise the wires around and the prong connector. I hope this will not be too difficult of a job. THanks!

vision1707, thank you for asking. Long-story-short: It turned out the problem wasn’t with the thermostat at all. The drain-line had clogged and this resulted in an automatic shut-off of the a/c. My a/c guy, who I’ve used for years, blew it out with a compressed-air thing. I then went up in the attic with him and he showed me where to pour a pint of bleach every six weeks or so to keep the line clear. I will be doing that religiously from now on! “An ounce (or a pint) of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” I asked him if he charged a weekend premium, for coming out on a Saturday, and he said no. I said that he should. I then said, “I’m paying you an extra $60 whether you want it or not. You can take it in cash or I put it on the check.” He thanked me and accepted three twenties. Honest, competent, reliable repairman/contractors who consistently do good work are worth their weight in gold. Amen. The whole thing was a learning experience that unfortunately included a few days of discomfort smack dab in the middle of a Houston summer. “Wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy.”

Good observation & question presented by Kilroy below which I noticed & questioned to myself as well. Intuitively, the color coding of the wiring should match the terminal color designations. Why the discrepancy? Otherwise an excellent video. Do you have an answer to this?

Old thermostat had one wire to RH and one wire to W/B and a jumper from RH to RC (but I don't have air conditioning. The new thermostate has B, O, G, T, W, Not Used, R ad RC. So, where do I put the wires? I'm assuming I would put the RH into the R and the W/B into the W. Is that correct? And I would think I would just not use the jumper, since I don't have air conditioning. Help!
