Just a "me too" on the shooting and editing style. I was not left wishing I could see some of the little bits and pieces. Now off to see about the safety cable for the spring, which my door does NOT have (yikes).

Agree, clear, easy to follow video that provided the green light for me to go forward. For me though, I found it easier to proceed in the opposite direction. That is, first attach the looped cable end into the door, then run the bare end of the cable through the pulleys. Now attach the bare end through to 3 hole clip and attach the S hook onto the third hole of the clip. Finally, grab the assembly by the S hook and attach it to the door bracket from which it was removed.

I see 4 years have gone by, according to the comments here, but your video is super simple, well explained (pleasantly voiced) and very informative. I'm a 72 year old man and I've waited over a year to fix and replace my broken pulley cable. I considered paying someone; but I took a look at how it works normally and thought, "I bet there's a KZfaq video that will show me exactly what to do!" Then I found yours at the top of the search and I thoroughly enjoyed it! Of course, my door's brackets, cables and general area are quite dirty and full of cobwebs and a bit of rust. My first task is to clean it all up so I can see what I'm doing. LOL! I've already changed the springs and *safety* cables on my other door (double garage) without any issues, so thanks to you, I'll be able to replace this pulley cable relatively easily. Thanks again for a great video. I *liked* it and I'll subscribe to your page, too. :-) thanks, Rick White

Great camera spotlight on project. Great ability to JUST DISCUSS HOW-TO, without all the other unnecessary introduction and needless chatter. Guy appeared at my mom’s house trying to charge her $1,700 for the repair and $4,000 for a new door, all she needed was a $8.95 cable for Home Depot!! 😡 I will repair it myself tomorrow, thanks for the tips.

Good clear video. Helped me a lot. I had to take off the bottom section to straighten it out after an accident with the car. I took the hinges off with the garage door partly down, and they flew up and caught on the next hinge. After straightening the door, I could not get the bottom hinges back on again, because of all the tension. And I couldn't lift the door back up either--too much for my 75-year-old arms. Finally I figured out that I could separate off each of the top three sections, and push them up out of the way one at a time. That allowed me to put the final bottom section into the up position where the tension was off it. Then reattached the hinge and cable as you show. Things went smoothly after that, and it raises and lowers like butter now. Thanks for the informative video. It helped a despairing DYIer get himself out of a jam, without calling for help.

Good video. If the cable you're replacing is already broken it complicates measuring the old cable to get the correct length. I found that getting the broken cable detached from the bottom of my door to be much more difficult as the original loop wasn't large enough to get it over the stud on the bottom bracket and had to cut the loop to get it off.

So, far, everyone that has commented has made a successful repair. If the cable is too long & you need to cut the cable and don't have cable cutters you can cut it with a hammer & cold chisel. hi! So that knot you made at 04:23 - that's good enough for it to hold? The current cable I had that broke had the loop at both ends, granted it was over 10 years old. All the new ones I see do not have the loop at both ends, but it does have that 3-holed metal connector. Is that black tape at the end? thanks in advance...

Yep, the knot shown will hold. I put electrical tape on the cut end of the cable to stop it from fraying/cover the sharp edges.

These ones must be an ancient set up, mine does not use springs just cable working off a center tension spring that winds the cable when lifting door.
@Know-How-Now
@Know-How-Now 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jerry thank you for taking the time to comment. It's not an ancient set-up. I just bought and installed a new door and it came with extension springs, not torsion springs. IMHO, the extension springs are a little safer for a home owner to work on.

I am repairing an extension cable setup where it appears the original installer did not set things up correctly. When closed, the extension spring is stretched over 70" and all of the extension springs I have seen are supposed to be a maximum of 67" at full extension. Adjusting by attached the spring lower on the bracket hasnt helped since at its lowest, it is still stretched 69" and now the pulleys rub on the door. Is there a rule of thumb for how much slack to leave for the clevis pulley?
@Know-How-Now
@Know-How-Now 5 жыл бұрын
If the tension is correct, you should be able to "balance" the door. If the door is opened about 1/2 way (with the opener detached) you should be able to let go of the door & it should stay in that position. Adjust the cable length until the door balances. If it won't balance, maybe the wrong size spring is installed. I have a video that shows how to weigh the door, click on the channel name and look through the playlists. The pulleys should not rub while the door is moving. If they are rubbing maybe the angle is not correct & you may have to change the position of where the spring is attached to the vertical hanger. I'm suggesting these ideas because you indicate that the installer may have been learning their craft on your dime. If you observe, think the problem though & have some common sense & patience you can solve the problem. Good luck!
@gregfisher1986
@gregfisher1986 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I took your advice and was able to reattach new springs properly and get the door balanced. The previous owner of our house had it done so I didnt have the luxury of watching anyone so your videos sure helped. Now that I know how, I feel like I need some more garage doors to fix. lol

You are welcome. Way to go on getting the problem solved. My door was not installed properly & never worked correctly. The door in the video is gone, a member of my household couldn't wait for the door to fully open & backed into & bent the bottom panel. I needed a faster opener! lol! installed a new door. When I put the new track up, I found the the jambs are not square & realized that the old track was not square. I put new jambs up(the old ones were too narrow & split) & squared the new track with a shim, the new door works great.
