Hi Everyone! Today we get into replacing the rear brakes on our 1995 Porsche 993. Ours is an early car and these came in a few flavors, but the basic process is the same. If you have a later model without the vacuum brake boost or with the "ABD" (Automatic Brake Differential) option ("S"s and Turbos) then every few flushes you should contact a shop that has the tool to open up all the valves associated with that system to get a complete flush. As you'll see in the video the brake pad dampers are a bit of a pain to source so I just re-used them as they were in fine shape.
Let me know if you have any specific questions.
Enjoy! Franny

Mmmm I guess it would be easier to install the anti-vibrations pads with the brake calliper unmounted, right? What I usually do with my cars is to mount the pads on the calliper carrier and then mount the calliper, but of course it depends on the car. Probably in your case it would have been better to mount all the anti-vibrations pads and the brake pads on the calliper and then mount the system, but I'm saying this without knowing exactly how that brake system is, so maybe I'm completely wrong! 😅 Very nice video though and very interesting on how to tackle the problems even with OEM parts!

I’m glad you mentioned how slow the brake bleeding was. I’ve got the same system (Motive power bleeder) and on a BMW and Toyota it was very quick, but... on a VW is was very slow. Since Porsche is owned by VW, maybe there’s some common design “feature” in both braking systems which causes the slow bleeding? Also, the uneven wear (inner and outer pads) can be caused by sticky caliper slide pins. If that’s the case, the fix is to remove the pins, clean off the old grease, replace with fresh grease.
@vayabroder729

Those Motive bleeders are great!

I think it may have been the bleeder. Once we got some fluid through it sped up considerably. The other corners weren't that bad. Having someone pump was super fast though.

Great videos, one point that helps during brake fluid bleeding using the Motive power bleeder is to fill the bleeder with 2 L of brake fluid and then pressurize to 15 psi. Then start by bleeding at the passenger side rear caliper, driver side rear, passenger side front , finally driver side front.

Great video as always. Very good idea to add “never sleeze on the hub. I couldn’t tell you how many cars I have worked on that had stuck rotors. 🥵. The trick to get the pads with the dampers on, is to install the pads first onto the caliper the slide the whole caliper with the pads attached onto the rotor. Of course add your mounting hardware afterwards.

Thanks! I thought of that after I got them on ;) , but in hindsight, maybe it will help folks who are just replacing pads and not the rotors? There seemed to me enough room either way which was good. The other side was just fine too.

FYI : if too hard to pull the rotor out, there should be threaded holes in the rotors to screw bolts in and help push the rotor out of the hub.

Hi Heidi and Franny! Franny, never ever use a torque wrench to loosen bolts. They are usually stuck pretty good and you will throw your torque wrench out of calibration. Use a breaker bar, please. I've done lots of brake jobs on various of my cars and never torqued them. Just a good shove and that's good. Lol You know those little rubber bulbs in an ear wax removal kit? That's what I use to empty my reservoir with. Works great. I don't use it on my ears afterwords. Lol I've never seen those little pad thingies on any car before. Usually just a little copper grease. I think those parts you got that were different were OE as opposed to OEM. That may account for the slight differences. Almost forgot. It sounded like your park brake was scraping after you adjusted it out. I wouldn't think you'd want it touching at all. Seems a little tight and might in fact glaze the new shoes. Great video with good detail.
@strshooter7399

Hi Franny, As a many of course with at least drum brakes, pull both wheels off at the same time, only do one wheel disassembly at a time. That way (even with great pics) you typically have a correct template to refer to if case things aren’t going back together correctly (as easily as you think?). As someone said previously, you Never pull both apart at the same time. (Unless you’ve done it so many times, you can do it in your sleep, and typically that just isn’t the case). Great job as always, love your though-ness, taking notes to keep everything in order and correct. As it’s been said by some; “there’s never enough time to do job correctly the first time, but always enough to do it the second time”. Keeping track and not making silly mistakes by having good notes, pays double dividends by not having to take it apart again to get it right. Great job 👍😎🙂

Great video as always and I’m shocked that there was something I knew that Franny didn’t (the 2 different size spiders on the 993 pads)!
@RudyP18
@RudyP18 3 жыл бұрын
Also... putting the spiders in first, then slotting the pads carefully in is the way I do it too but if I’d had the calipers off like you did, I would have done all of that while the calipers were off the rotor which would have given you plenty of access: step 1) remove sticky backing from spider 2) put spiders in the piston holes 3) place the pad against them 4) repeat for other side 5) reinstall caliper with both pads onto rotor.

When I adjust the handbrake I always center the brake pads by pulling the handbrake lever inside the car a couple of times and then free it with the screwdriver. Most of the time you don't have to free it, when they are centered they are loose. BTW Good video. I also sandpaper new pads a little bit , especially at the ends. You don't have the special spring plier so you could not install the new small spring.

Wow. I've done a few brake jobs in my time, but I think on this one I would have taken it to the mechanic. Kudos to you for doing it yourself. As for asbestos. According to all my trainings, the danger is breathing in the teensiest little speck of it. It can sit in your lungs for years and rear its ugly head in the form of mesothelioma. When possible, asbestos should be wet down before disturbing it, but on doing a brake job, that's not so handy.
@HeidiandFranny

@@HeidiandFranny I saw that as well, and @michele crown is right - the danger is inhalation moreso. But you did give a warning about asbestos and that's the key issue - one needs to be careful (as usual!). Thanks for doing the video on the 'newer' car.

Hi Franny I did this a couple of years ago on my 993 and was advised that you should also blead off the clutch slave cylinder as it is on the same circuit and you can get old fluid contamination from that. Also during the process it is advisable to lift the clutch pedal between each pump or there can be issues with the clutch not disengaging properly. Lastly, it is necessary to use a device known as a Bosch hammer tool to open/close the valves in the ABS part of the system. These are extremely expensive and not available for DIY'ers , the alternative is to bleed everything, then take the car for a drive on a quiet remote road and stand on the brakes "HARD" till the ABS cuts in and then return home and repeat the bleeding. Be careful. Thanks for your tuition video on the climate control unit fan motor repair, I am about to try doing that, Good luck

With uneven wear like that, chances are that the previous time this was done, someone forgot that there are two bleed nipples per caliper. It happens too often. You'll end up with old fluid on one side a fresh fluid on the other. It's actually good practice to refresh the brake fluid once a year anyway. It's the brakes; the most important thing on the car. Needs top priority always. With the parking brake... You could've left everything in situ and just sand the shoes down with some sandpaper. They were probably just glazed over. This "OEM" non-fitting cr@p, probably holds the car less than the old parts. Since the thickness of the brake material is thinner, it's combined diameter is less. Now it probably just touched the drum on only two small places. One per shoe. It'll be always out of adjustment for a long time... I personally would have never fitted the new shoes, but that's me.
@TheAlanFish
@TheAlanFish 3 жыл бұрын
It's amazing how similar the emergency brake system was on my 2007 Cayman S to this. I would bet that 75% plus of the part numbers are the same. That job SUCKS though. The springs never want to go back into place properly without a knock down drag out of a fight. You pretty much need to fabricate a tool by cutting a slot/half moon shape in the end of a straight slot scredriver so it won't slip off the spring so easily. Personally when I do the brakes, I simply unbolt the calipers from the carrier, spread the pads just enough to clear any lip, then pull the whole thing off with the pads still inserted. From there, its quite easy to remove the pads and dampers, compress the pistons, and replace everthing before slipping it all back over the rotors. May not be "proper" procedure, but works quite efficiently.

OEM-Parts: Never never throw old used parts away! Most new parts are crap. You easily can rebuild the emergency brake shoes with a new pad. I guess this would be better than the „new“ parts. Brake fluid: I use the same system with the pump, it works perfect on every car. The 993 has an old mostly mechanical ABS-System. To flush those with pressure (which is the only correct way) you need at least 2 - 2.5 bar. Then it is important to block the brake power regulator at an open position. Try it again in max. 2 years😎

@HeidiandFranny Hello again, so I never got round to doing this job, but back on it now. It's not the parts you're referring to but they are called "spring plates". I need to especially change mine on the rear as the car is v high mileage and over the years muck has got under them and they are now stopping the callipers move (rear only affected so braking still decent from the fronts. I guess I'll notice a difference when I get some rear brakes again though!)

Oh what color did you use to paint the brake dust shield? Your brake fluid seems darker than normal. You may need a full flush.

I think it was Dull Aluminum. I thought that too about the color, but it was fresh fluid. That is supposed to be pretty good stuff but I usually see a marked color change.

Franny, preload the pads in the caliper then slide the complete assembly in and torque! BTW I've had good luck with Zimmerman rotors on the BMW's I used to drive, my SAAB and of course my Porsche! Also does your car have ABS Brakes? That might have been a cause for slow bleeding action. There is a specific process for bleeding ABS systems. You can't beat the Motive tool!
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that! I was following the procedure for replacing just pads (of course they say to refer to that when replacing the rotor as well - lol!). But totally, that would have been a bit easier ;) Good to know on the Zimmerman rotors. It does have ABS so maybe that was it, but I think I may have had a somewhat clogged bleeder. The rest were a bit easier, but still not very fast. This one was painful and I didn't want to go past 15psi. Having Heidi pump away really did the trick.

@@HeidiandFranny Great! I know what you mean about some of these procedures being more challenging than they ought to be. Mazda has a specific procedure for bleeding ABS brake systems. When I did my '95 M-edition I had the car on the lift with wheels off and my wife pumping the brakes while the engine was running! They warn about getting air in the ABS controller as its neigh impossible to get it all out. I love watching as you tackle all these projects!

Thanks! I was thinking that maybe there was some air in the system? I didn't see that on the other side. Could be a bad piston but they seemed to push in just fine... I'll just keep an eye on it.
@lowreedman
@lowreedman 3 жыл бұрын
In my limited experience uneven pad wear is a sign of one of the pads binding somehow. It could be the piston is not extending properly and that could be many different reasons. It could also be that the wear point on the pad wear it touches was not lubricated, or the lubrication wore off and the metal on metal ceased the pad. This would cause the other side to do more of the work.

For the spiders: do not peel off the non stick before putting in the calipers. Just fold over the edge, to make gripping with needle nose pliers easy. This way you can push them in and seat them without sticking to your fingers. Once seated, reach in with the pliers and remove the backing.

Your issue with the parking brake shoes is, I believe, that the part has been superceded with a 997 part so in order to fit them without resorting to a grinder you need to use the corresponding 997 adjuster.

Couldn't you install the pads prior to installing the caliper on the rotor? Seems it would be easier to get the pads in with the sensors installed correctly and then would be just a 'slip-on' rotor and then torque. Obviously the system is designed to allow replacement of the pads without removing the caliper as a service interval, but when it's off to replace the rotor anyway, why not take advantage?
