This is by far the best video for setting the ignition timing on an engine with a cam position sensor. I do not own a scanner that’s capable of getting a correct reading. I’ve used a timing light for years and it’s seems after watching you I can dust it off again. Thanks for being clear and safety minded while giving complete instructions for this process.

I’ve done this 4 or 5 times on various 88-98 chevys. I never pull a plug or get to tdc. I just pull the cap and make an index mark where the rotor is pointing. I pull the distributor and then drop in the new one and make sure the rotor points to that line. Then I unplug the wire under the dash and then time it up making sure to plug the wire back in. If I had timing chain issues then I’d do it your way.

Great video. On some models this vintage the ECM timing plug is under the hood to the right of the power distribution block on the firewall approx. beneath the passenger side windshield wiper. Also, if the timing light shows your not lined up with the TDC notch you can loosen the distributor hold down clamp enough so you can turn the distributor. Very slowly rotate it CW or CCW until the timing gun shows the mark lines up with the notch. Then tighten the clamp back down on the distributor again. It helps to have two people; one with the timing light watching while the other rotates the distributor until it lines up. You can do it yourself but it takes longer. Cheers.

Hi. This was a great tutorial, thank you! I was putting a cap and rotor on my son's 87 Camaro IROC Z, and I noticed that under the rotor there was a lot of rust. I noticed there is no vacuum advance in this distributor, so I assume the ECM controls the timing advance. I noticed under the rotor that there were little triangles that I assume are for the advance. With all of this rust in there, I am wondering if the rust is stopping the timing from advancing?? It idles good, but shakes bad as it goes in the RPM range. Back when they had HEI distributors on Chevrolets, you could grab the rotor and turn it, and you could see the springs and weights move as you turned it. I couldn't get this one to turn at all. I'm not sure if it just doesn't turn, or if it didn't turn because there is rust in there. Any thoughts on this?

My buddy blew one of my motors (built 306) because he forgot to put the oil pressure rod (sbf) in before the distributor, and within 10mins of the motor running with no oil pressure, we started hearing a loud screech. I ended up buying a 331 stroker from his buddy and it was the best investment I ever made. Moral of story, everything happens for a reason lol

So, after removing the #1 Spark plug and setting it on compression stroke. are you suppose to set the crank pulley up with the 0 degree mark? thanks

It would line up automatically. The line on the damper and 0° mark would indicate top dead center. Which is the end of the compression stroke

Uh oh. I am in the process of replacing intake manifold gaskets. I didn’t watch this video beforehand. I had to remove distributor to get intake manifolds off. All I did was mark the cap and a bracket to line up. I did spin the gear to clean some goop off it. Timing ..... who knows now. Can this process be done with distributor out? Get cyl 1 to tdc. The rotate rotor to wire 1?. That will get timing close enough to run and set accurately? Great vid.

When checking the timing with a light afterwards, is The notch on the pully supposed to line up with the mark on the block?
@ThomasVMan
@ThomasVMan 3 жыл бұрын
Yes. If it doesn't, you need to loosen the hold down screw on the base of the distributor just enough so that you can turn the distributor. Rotate the distributor until the timing line on the pulley lines up with the time notch. Then tighten the bolt on the distributor.

I replaced the distributor on my 90 k1500 with another used one because my old one was squealing like a pig. the truck has never run right since. I have been trying to figure why for a while now and have replaced just about every sensor and tune up part I can think of, some more than once. with no luck truck starts and runs but stumbles and misses at all rpm. I can drive it but its no fun. I just noticed while looking at another ad for distributors that there may be a difference between a87-91 and a 92 up distributor. can any of you guys school me on this. I may have bought one for a 92 up, dose it matter?

Vehicle will run smoother in general under idle or under load. Lots of times the distributor or distributor cap gets corroded over the years which causes poor voltage and amperage which will cause vehicle to run rough or no start. All it’s doing is converting mechanical energy to Electrical energy

How are you doing? My name is Wilfredo I have a little problem I have a 91 GMC, sierra C 1500 Rear Wheel Dr., 5.7 L and add call start I have a little backfiring through the exhaust for like a half a second then it runs beautiful after that like normal that just started happening. I covered all my ground cleaned up everything to the fullest change the distributor, cap rotor, ignition module cables, spark, plugs coil air filter, clean ground to chassis to block to brackets change the heat sending unit change the heat temperature sensor used carburetor cleaner to clean out any gunk in the carburetor. It looks exactly like your motor on your truck and change the fuel filter. I waited to the tank was completely empty. Used a bottle of Lucas fuel injection cleaner filled tank to as capacity and still have that little backfiring. It starts right up one shot but immediately it starts rumbling a little backfiring here and there then it goes back to normal on his own dries excellent on highway everything can you help me with this and tell me more or less what could it be? Thank you.

If it cranked and didn't start and the plugs were wet with fuel you have no spark. It's either the distributor pick up coil, or the ignition module has failed. Usually it's the module, but if the distributor is looking old and worn replace it.

Great Video but you must remember that the oil shaft may be in the wrong place because all the distributors are not the same and a lot of people do not have the shaft turning tool you may be able to set the shaft down in the block at top dead center and slowly rotate crank and it should drop in to place on oil drive shaft it won't take out of time then adjust the distributor after ran.
