Hi this is Geramicc85 with a new video about the repair of the emergency brake cable on my Dodge Ram 1500. The e-brake must be loosened and the vehicle should be secured from rolling. The cable runs over the rear axle and into the drum of the rear wheel. Here you see how the cable is damaged and the steel cable inside has rusted. I had tried to fix it with tape but that obviously didn’t work, because the steel cable inside just kept rusting away. In this truck the e-brake cable divides into two cables at the rear axle to reach both rear wheels. I just have to replace the shorter part on the driver's side. I ordered the spare part online. In the video description you will find a product link. In order to remove the old cable, I have to take off the wheel and open the drum brake. Some parts of the brake must be removed. There is a detailed video on my channel for replacing brake cylinders and repairing and reassembling the drum brake. The cable is fixed by a spring onto the handbrake lever which presses on the brake shoes during actuation. I release the spring from the lever with a pair of pliers. It can be easier if you take some tension off the cable by loosening up the tensioner. Now I can remove the cable from the lever and pull the spring off. In order to take the cable from the brake carrier plate, the hooks must be pressed back. Now the cable can be removed from the tensioner on the other end. Here, too, the metal barbed hooks must be pressed in order to be able to remove the cable. Now the old cable is completely removed. I will start again at the rear wheel, to put the new cable in. For this I push the cable through the hole in the brake carrier plate, so that the barbed hooks spread out. Now i slide the spring on and attach the cable to the lever. The spring must also be attached to the lever. Now the drum brake can be completely reassembled with the handbrake lever. If you want to see more details on this check out my drum brake video on my channel. The other end of the cable I push through the hole at the tensioner, and make sure that it's sitting well. Now the cable can be re-attached to the tensioner. I set the tensioner back to the original setting while making sure that the e-brake is not to hard to push. It is important that the brake shoes are adjusted correctly. In this case, the brake shoes are automatically adjusted. Only after adjustment, can the braking function be checked. The new brake cable is secured with a metal guard, which helps to hold the cable onto the axle. I hope this video also helps with repairs on other vehicles. You will find product links in the description and I enjoy reading your comments and don’t forget to give me a thumbs up. On my channel you'll find many more useful videos on repairs and modifications to my Dodge Ram. Please don’t forget to subscribe. Until next time, Geramicc85 signing out.
