Rust hole removal and repair. Repairing a rust hole in your car is something that should be done quickly to prevent it from spreading. You can easily do this at home with some practice and get the results you see in this video. I teach you the basics of what welder you want to use and how to weld so you can get started. I answer questions like, should you butt weld or lap weld floor panels? Rust is common at the wheel wells, quarter panels, rocker panels, and floor boards of cars and in this video I show the proper and most thorough way to remove and repair rust.

As a 52 yr old sheet metal tradesman I’d recommend someone who has never welded sheet metal to a day or 2 practicing with slow/fast wire speeds and low/high power to get a true feel for welding car body metal. Chris is making this sound a lot easier than it actually is. Practice will mean you don’t need to repeat the job. My new apprentices spend a month (a least) practicing before they touch a customers job.

I've always been afraid of welding, but I was thinking something similar. I've seen enough and read enough to know about welding that its not THAT easy, and especially once you get close to structural joints around suspension. But I think idiots do need to take responsibilty if thinking using super high heat and melting metal is just something you 'pick up and start doing'. But anyting being welded I think thats worth mentioning, do some prep work and maybe take a course or ask a mechanic to watch some welding. My mechanic who just welded my exhaust says he doesn't do body welds, find somebody who does. I like DIY, but welding is definitely not something to make sound TOO easy just because you can find cheap equipment. Its sort of like electrical, yeah you can do it but there's a reason why it takes about six years to get a red seal. But I did like his energy.

Awesome video! I've been a welder for over 20 years, specializing in TIG, MIG, MAG, and stick welding. When working with thin metal, I position the welding gun at an angle away from the puddle. This way, you don't add too much heat to the plate, resulting in a flatter weld and less grinding afterward. For metal over .38 inch , I point the gun at an angle into the puddle. Just some tips!

EXCELLENT WORK! This is one of THR BEST KZfaq tutorials I have ever seen. I'm an older guy, I have done some of this work before and I Iearned SO MUCH. Your style is GREAT. No BS and random chatter, clear, articulate and friendly. Well edited! It's also apparent that you are not reading the material , which leads to a stiff-sounding presentation. On top of all of that, you have a very positive way of making challenging work seem very approachable to beginners. This is a truly rare skill. And you don't gloss over anything (which can be so frustrating) Lastly, the amount of REALLY useful tips you throw out like popcorn is really amazing. The vent techniques, disconnecting the battery, proper grounding for the weld, the flashlight trick....so useful. Honestly, I have never contributed to a KZfaq creator before, but I'm going to send you a few bucks. And subscribe. Thanks so much for a truly excellent presentation. Five stars.

FYI your mig welder’s wire spool is upside down, the wire should have a natural, strait line, for all you English speaking readers, the wire shouldn’t be bent, and is so, a little bend. For all the people who still don’t understand, the wire needs to come off the spool from the bottom on this specific welder, the manual is a true legend for dangerous equipment, look it throughout. Btw I think you had your weld settings almost perfect, if you look at the tack welds, you’ll notice a little dot, we call that a fish eye, it indicates (for me) perfect or near perfect settings, so good job man! Helpful how-to’s always are needed!

I love your videos, you pay so much attention to detail. Especially your interior and exterior detailing work. I love how you show that professional results can be had with common tools in your own driveway. And how you list the sources of it all. Your tips give me lots of inspiration for cleaning up my show car. One thing I’d like to see if you haven’t already, is making cloudy chrome or faux chrome window trim shine again. If anyone could do it and describe it well it’d be you. I’m self taught and do the same as you, with the pulse welding, cooling just enough to join the pools and penetrate without blowing through. However I never tried the non ferrous metal backing to fill holes. I just build the weld. In any case, you got great welds for the application. All it needs is to be solid. But one thing noticed in this video is you only removed the undercoat for a small distance around the edges. I’ve been welding thin auto floors and things for years (though only with flux core). And in my experience, any nearby undercoat or seam sealer will ignite from the welding heat. Every time. Did that happen on yours? I know a guy who burned his car to the ground that way as he wasn’t checking beneath. I’ll remove it all from the panel before starting. (You’ll want it gone so the paint will stick anyway.) I always make sure that anything that will melt is held loose from the area. And anything like hoses or wires or lines passing near the area, I cover with an old sopping wet towel. And keep a spray bottle on hand, and check the opposite side repeatedly to make sure nothing is burning. Any question that I’m near the gas tank, I’ll either shield it with a sopping wet towel, or just take it out if it’s not too difficult or if it’s a big job.

Fabricator/diy bodyman here. Excellent display of the basics and how to solve a simple issue, the only thing id have to add is that when you go to stitch the panel, to make it look as flush as possible and keep distortion to a minimum: I like to skip around each corner of the panel with one/two stitches and everytime ive passed 4 corners ill stop, wait 7 minutes to allow the metal to cool for a bit. Really allows you the option to take the beads down with a sanding flap to appear flush with the shape of the paneling around it👍

My criticisms: - You can use flux core for this application with the technique you've shown. It is much more tolerant to wind and contaminants and much cheaper to run. - Your tack weld had a crater in the middle. Stay on the weld a little longer. - Your first stitch weld had a void in the top right. - You really should wear leather gloves for welding. Vinyl can melt to your hand and gives no protection against heat or UV cooking your skin. Still, good stuff, enjoyed the video and you showed good technique.

That's not fair. If you were my daughter you would've been welcomed and encouraged to join under the hood and invited to get greasy with the brothers. Ive always said every girl at least should know how an automobile mechanically basically works (how the parts interact with each other and trouble shot problems) besides put gas in it and turn the key. So they don't get ripped off if they do decide to take their car to a shop. Good for you even if you have to research and learn on your own. Hey, just a suggestion look into learning some welding also it's useful knowledge and skill too, to go along with the automotive learning. Amazon has some welders at affordable prices. Yes welder brand seem to have decent welders at excellent prices that's good for beginner or homeowner use, with good reviews by KZfaq reviewers. Plenty of video tutorials out there. Just putting the idea out there if interested. 👍Good luck to you learning all you can.👍

I enjoyed this because you show the beginner default up front. Not intent on breaking the bank on someone starting out. Safety and general care is great. Show mistakes and how to FIX the problem. Nice work. Thanks Something I can direct my students to.

Chris your videos are magical! Thank you so much for your patient guidance and expertise. One might think you're 50 years old from how much you know. I wonder if I would have been brave enough to tackle this type of task if I had decided to keep my 2004 Mazda 6 hatchback with its famous rear wheel arch and rocker panel rust. That job seemed so daunting.

God bless you, brother! After 52 yrs in the tooth fixing business, I wish my dental instructors could have shown us 1/10 the enthusiasm for the work as you demonstrated with this fix. The vocal was wonderful and you provided lots of knowledge in an easy to absorb manner. You are a great teacher and I appreciate it.
