Update... I just finishing changing the part. It took me better part of an hour; I took it slow. I did not have to take all the parts off as you did. I took the battery out and the battery plastic tray off. Besides pulling some of the electrical connectors off and the tube from the valve cover to the airbox, I didn't need to pull the airbox off. My car is a 2010 and the airbox looked a little different BTW. When I pulled out the Coolant Water Outlet... It looked exactly like yours did in the video. After putting it all back together I had an issue the first time I started the car.... It didn't start... I had changed the valve cover gasket before and ran into the same issue, I checked the electrical connectors and I head a big CLICK! Then the car started. Anyone that does this make sure you hear the click, it looked like it was on all the way and sure enough, it wasn't. I just bleed the system and ran the car for a 1/2 hour. The temp never got to the ½ way mark. I took it for a 4-mile test drive to the gas station and back making sure I didn't get to far. Still the temp gage never got to the ½ mark. I would like to thank you for your video, it made it much easier to do. I would say on a scale of 1-10 difficulty I would say 5.5. It is really a 4.5 but the tight squeeze and all the stuff to pull out the way adds another point to it. Total repair cost with part and coolant was $50 plus tax and about 1 ½ hours of my time.

You're welcome though again, the thanks is from me. I confess I'm a little uneasy about the whereabouts of the old blown gasket. After removing the coupling, the gasket was nowhere to be seen so I am hoping it's not somewhere in the cooling system waiting to clog up something inside the engine.

My wife's car had a coolant leak that I tracked down to this area of the car. Got the manifold off and her's looks exactly like this one. Excellent video. I will note, that if you are lazy you can definitely do this without removing as much stuff on the car as in the video. Don't get me wrong, there is a trade off since access isn't easier. At the same time, you reduce the odds of forgetting to reconnect something or getting confused. I took the battery out, the bracket above the mainfold, disconnected a few of the connectors, and then sort of shoved stuff out of the way just enough. I will also say that the bottom two bolts, a mirror is helpful in locating those. Overall though, good video, much appreciated.

I think this might be what happened on my 09 focus today. I noticed a very small leak a couple of months ago, thought nothing of it since the car was running fine but later saw my coolant level was dropping so I refilled it. This morning, the car very suddenly started to overheat and I saw coolant was almost empty. Even after refilling the coolant it still overheats in just a few minutes. Maybe the coolant was too low and blew the seal as you mentioned in the video. Hope the mechanics can fix it up easily! Thanks for the great explanation.

Good video, thanks. For 2012 Focus SE 2.0L the part number is Dorman 902-1085. Comes with a built in sensor. Replacement is similar to what is shown here. I would definitely remove the air filter box, battery and battery box up front. Not difficult at all. I didn't disconnect any hoses except from the water outlet itself. The last hose is on the bottom of the outlet: remove the outlet itself, then turn it over to access the bottom hose.

@@ATEMOFFROAD no no, I didn’t remove the plug. :) After some digging I was told it’s a casting plug for the cylinder head and if there’s anything leaking from there it’s motor oil.. in our case it’s water that has been leaking (but not from there) - after my husband couldn’t find any leaks visually he simply blowed air (with his mouth 🤦🏼‍♀️) into the coolant tank and following the hissing sound I located the leak and it did look like that water is coming out from behind of that casting plug it looked very confusing to both of us😄 but now we know that it’s that coolant water outlet causes the leak.

What was your reasoning to change this piece? I am having issues where only at idle it blows cold air. I have to rev or accelerate to receive heat. I refilled with collant, added bars leaks in case of any leaks, but I am not sure if it can be radiator or fan or water pump. Thermostat was changed, perhaps just a flush is needed? There are so many intricate parts and questions, but what do you suggest/think? Worried could be heater core but then again I am getting heat when car is accelerating or revving. What could possibly be the issue? I also notice the fan in front of the radiator doesn’t go on... think that's just for AC though.
@Mister_CVC

Mind you, the engine will overheat from time to time and the reservoir loses coolant suspiciously, with no leaks visible. I don't know what to do. I am not noticing leaks by the water pump, or maybe I'm not making a fair assessment.

I now am not receiving any heat whatsoever. Can it be because of one leak?
@ATEMOFFROAD
@ATEMOFFROAD 6 ай бұрын
It’s tough to say as I’m not there , but there are two tests I’d recommend for this situation, a coolant pressure test and a head gasket failure test. If your coolant hasn’t been changed in three years then it’s a good time to replace that , but let’s first find out if system components have failed. One pro tip never put just water in your engine it can cause rusts and the expansion and contraction of water can cause premature failure. There is a head gasket test kit you can rent from your local auto parts store, it’s a cheap way to get to the point without throwing a bunch of parts at the engine and wasting money. If you’re good, check for leaks and repair as necessary. Now on this car the thermostat was failing causing a pressure increase on one side and the weakest component in the closed loop cooling system is that plastic manifold I replaced. In theory that should blow out first to help depressurize the cooling system. If you don’t have leaks and no blown head gasket, make sure the heater valve is working properly, Opening and closing. You can remove it and bench test. If that’s good and you haven’t replaced the thermostat replace that and coolant. The thermostat is the main component regulating the heat of the engine proper heat is necessary to keep the engine running lean. Are there any checks engine codes? I would only proceed to a heater core replacement if all this mentioned above is well examined and in good working order. Is there straight water in your cooling system? Signs of rust? Here os the link to the testers I recommend amzn.to/47yTbeJ amzn.to/48BXeYY
@Mister_CVC
@Mister_CVC 6 ай бұрын
@ATEMOFFROAD No water coming into cabin. I think there is a leak by the radiator. Would a flush be sufficient or recommended to change radiator and hoses as well? I want to get to the root of this but I don't think/am unsure if water pump or heater cores are the issues. Again, now, I'm getting 0 heat with heater on full blast. The needle wants to go past middle towards H and goes ¾, given that there's coolant then it goes back slightly. It has to be a leak then when all things considered, it'll just keep exhausting coolant. Thoughts.

I don’t know , because the oem style didn’t come with it, but I suppose it could be! I want to say has to do with the turbo models, or another type of car this engine is in! But I’m guessing not totally sure. Thanks for watching I appreciate it! 🍻

After replacing the part and adding some coolant ... when you start the car you should run it with the heat blasting, correct? I'm about to replace this right now, my completely erupted on me last night 😂

Yes, but just until operating temperatures, let it cool and recheck fluid , you’ll have to do this a couple of times

Oh no , Have you got the car to start? My suggestion would be to start going through and back tracking everything you did! Also make sure each connection you disconnect is making a good connection, I’ve seen this before where the electrical pins bend out and miss there connection! Good luck 👍🏼

I wouldn’t think there related! They just fail unfortunately! I would suggest thermostat and gasket replacement too! If you see any hoses that feel soft, good time to replace those too! Good luck 👍🏼

What is that oriface(circle) that's on the block above the water outlet? Seems there's a buildup of coolant flowing from there as well. Is it just a freeze plug or something?

EXCELLENT job explaining all aspects and CLEARLY showing the steps. MUCH appreciated your mentioning the potential root cause being the thermostat and should be changed to avoid a recurrence of the problem. Very well done. thank you
