With a bit of wrist flexibility switch can be reached and removed through fuse box opening (near door hinge). Remove three 7mm bolts holdings fuse box, move it outwards and aside and voila

OMG!!! Thank you soooo much. This is my 1st time fixing anything in my truck!!!! I feel so accomplished!!!!! Sadly I’ll have to take it back apart because 2 wires on my harness were a little fried, at least I know I can do it and I can drive to work tonight safely. Dude! Thank you so much for the help man! Who knows why the switch in my beloved 2001 Ranger broke bad but your video allowed me to put the correct tools together, sit in my truck and get it done within a few hours instead of a few days! I bought the switch locally but I do need ball joints ( I hope you have a video for that job! ) and will chat with you when I have the funds. I'll visit your website to contact you. Thanks again!

Thanks for this video. I used it last year for my old ranger when the switch went bad and today for my current ranger when the screw-inserts went bad. One thing to note- if the vehicle is old enough you might not be able to get that harness out. On the switch-replacement I wasn't. I'd advise people to locate or even buy a replacement harness before they start. I was extremely lucky that one of my walking-distance stores actually had a harness.

Yeah Haynes manuals are now outdated and pale in comparison to video or even high res. pics. Haynes should video their techs taking the vehicles apart while they write the books and include that footage in H.265 on DVD(s) included with each manual.

This Video was extremely helpful to me. Thanks! I did notice that it did not identify every screw that needs to be removed, when it come to removing the "metal plate" below the steering wheel. There were some small differences between what the video showed and my 2005 Ford Ranger. But only for a screw or two. I had smoke coming out of my driver side air vent. Electrical Smell. I could put my nose on the switch and smell it. This lead me to believe it was maybe the switch. I got lucky I guess. The mobile mechanics I spoke to on Craigslist were not to keen on taking on an electrical job, and the price to get it fixed was going to be very expensive it seemed. It I had not done this job myself, who knows how things could have evolved? The hardest part for me was getting the plastic piece that fits over the the instrument panel back in place. Somehow I got it back on without breaking it. Great Video!

This situation is present in many vehicles for many different switches. Design it with modular panels with seams everywhere and people whine that it's cheap looking and noisy when the panels rub together.

when removing the electrical plugs, you referred to the interior dimmer switch. do you have one of those for a 1997 ranger? if so, how much is it to ship to Arkansas (72354)

Blew a fuse on my 98 Explorer, Mainlight Fuse, and noticed the connector assembly just above the headlight switch had also burned out (it looks melted). So many wires in that connector I'm not sure what my next step is. Replace that assembly with no electrical experience whatsoever (it can be ordered online), keep using it and hope for the best or replace the entire wiring harness. I have no idea where to start and see no videos explaining the replacement of that connector.

'can't believe that 'My switch..(which is still good) pushed in..I guess that it means that the two Phillips head screws popped! Edit. 'Busted the plastic screw inserts..J-B Epoxy Weld!

I wouldn't trust glue. I drilled out the other end with the smallest bit I had. Long skinny bolts and nuts would be ideal, but it was Thanksgiving and the parts stores were closed so I used cotter pins.

Tail lights and fog lights ( two orangey color lights on front) stopped working along with the instrument cluster back lighting. Brake lights, turn signals, and headlights all work. Could this be my cause?

Mine is acting all strange. I repaired mine today and now when I turn the switch the fuel pump comes on/off as I switch the lights on with the vehicle off.

My switch broke and is dangling to the point where I have to open the side panel and press it up towards the dash to be able to turn the headlights on. Time to get a new switch. Ugh.

Caution if you are having a tough time unplugging headlight switch remove it from the panel first, two screws from the back, or the panel is very easily broken trying to unplug it !!
