True, the wheel need not be removed to perform this procedure. However, removal of the wheel in this video made the procedure far easier for the viewer to see exactly what the mechanic is doing.

Drill a 1/8 inch hole on the top of the steering column above the ignition switch about an inch in . poke a small screwdriver in the hole and press down on the ignition release and pull out. Did mine in about three minutes .

I always drill a small hole above that tumbler hole for access, then I insert a rubber plug into it, it looks clean and you don't have to go through all the extra stuff like pulling the steering wheel.

This is a great explanation of what crucial steps need to be done to remove the lock cylinder..some shortcuts can be taken but the removal of the cylinder from the steering column is perfectly explained

Do t remove steering wheel. Just remove the dash trim. Top cover will give you enough room to put your hand in there with an Allen key

So what happens if you don't have a key I have no key to do that so what do I do now without a key I lost the key to the truck I need to replace it

I think another video on a different approach to replacing a bad key cylinder would be helpful. Why is the Key Cylinder being replaced in the first place? It is likely because the key won't turn to the start/acc positions and the key is not the problem. Thus, the steering wheel is locked in place by the anti-theft deterrent mechanism. Therefore, how can one remove the steering wheel when the wheel won't move preventing access to the fittings to remove the wheel? There must be a better solution to this dilemma.

Will there be any kind of programming needed after installing the new ignition lock cylinder? Such as on a 2000 GMC Yukon Denali (Carryover)?

Can a bad lock cylinder cause no start. Mine has no power to fuel relay but if I cycle key a certain way it engages relay for like a second but disengages too soon. I'm thinking cylinder but maybe ignition switch I bought from oreillys.

Its mind boggling that the steering wheel was removed in this video. 'Ive done ignition replacements three time on my '98 and never had to pull the steering wheel.

Took the whole steering wheel off for no reason , then didn't take the plastic cover off ?? FYI YOU DO NOT NEED TO REMOVE THE STEERING WHEEL , JUST TAKE OFF COLUMN COVER AND USE PICK TO PRESS RELEASE BUTTON ON LOCK CYLINDER IN ACC POSITION

I have watched a lot of these kind of videos and none of them show how to get it out with out turning it. Every video says to turn to start spot and push the button to release. The switch will not turn no matter what you do so how dose that work??????

it has to turn to come out. sounds like you waited until it was completely stuck before you decided to fix it. try using an air chisel on low setting and vibrate the tumbler with the key in it and turn it at the same time, the vibration can free it so you can replace it.

and @BigDaddy, there's a youtube video on this vibration method. I haven't tried it. But if the cylinder is completely stuck, then what? It's a bad design. The coded key should be enough (plus an alarm if desired). And to thinks it's about a $20 part is beyond frustrating.

Steering wheel removal is completely unnecessary in any vehicle with a split steering column cover. 94 and older would require removal of the steering wheel. I came here looking for help on how to do the job without keys. You have made this way more complicated than it need be.

In the video you had to use the key to complete the job. Jason asked what if you lost your key? Will you still be able to swap out the ignition switch? I just lost mine on a 95 chevy g20.

@Bj Bo Jackson u can get a new key but if the cylinder is worn out u need a new cylinder
