Hey Good People,
By Popular Demand, I was finally able to record, edit and upload a walk through of a lifter job on a 3.6 Pentastar. This is for any vehicle that is Rear Wheel Drive and has the 3.6 Pentastar engine. Vehicles include: the Dodge Charger, Dodge Durango, Dodge Challenger, Jeep Cherokee, Jeep Wrangler and Chrysler 300. Let me know in the comments if I left something out.
I am aware of the short way of doing this job, but I did it the long way incase someone messes up the timing and you'll have the content to help you out if you get stuck. **** I rate this job at as somewhat difficult because there are a lot of steps and procedures.

I was trying to do this same lifter swap on my kids 2014 challenger. I thought you had said you were doing things like the average person without a shop so I was skimming thru to make sure I had everything. I missed the part where you pulled out your pneumatic impact and caused me to get stuck cause I don't have one lol. I got a pulley holder coming so I can free that bolt. I was so sure that I had everything cause I saw you doing things like a guy without a shop would do. Ohh well, it did save my kids a lot of money, just made my wife mad at me 😅

I've done this job on a Journey. You don't have to take the cams out. I loosened one end of the cams for half of them, wiggled them out and replaced one of the time and then torqued the cams back down, then loosened the other end of the cam to finish up. Pretty easy

Was the bad one in the middle thoe ? Because i did the same on my charger and now the motor shakes until it gets warm because the timing chain still had tension and the torque wrench wasnt actually torqing the bolt down to spec i actually broke multiple bolts trying to torque the cams back to spec with the timing chain still in tension

For anyone looking to do this its easy dont listen to people saying “you dont know what ur getting yourself into” the hardest part about this in my opinion is getting the camshaft bolts back on the cam because when u get one side in the other side doesnt want to go up as high causing the bolt to not want to go in. Other then that its just like changing tires just more complicated

Is the labor the same whether or not you replace the intake and exhaust cams if you replace all lifters and rockers for one side?

How can you tell if the lifters are bad? i ordered new mellings, they are all stiff,cant push them together. Of the ones i removed about half were stiff, and half i could compress with fingers. are they supposed to flex or be stiff? thanks for your videos

Would you have to drain the oil for this type of job? Or is it just the coolant that you drain out

I know this is an older video but I have a question. On the 3.2L is it necessary to touch the evap system? I have '15 cherokee 67K that just went in for rockers/lifters and 1 bad cam. Thanks!

Hey Alex, I was wondering if you have a similar video on a 5.7/6.4 charger/challenger. I have a 2014 6.4 charger and eventually I am going to tackle the cam and lifters as I have a cylinder 8 misfire (non mds cylinder). Troubleshooting tells me the lifter for the exhaust valve is bad and potential cam lobe damage. Yes it is parked.

My auto engine light is coming on I pull over and cut the engine off and then restart it acts normal but this periodically now??? 2020 dodge it is now 4 years old do you think it my battery needs replacement????

I watched your videos on this, and it was a massive help. however, I'm having a hard time finding the rockerarms for my durango. The kits I find have all the rockerarms looking the same. The rockerarms in my durango seem to be 2 different style rockers. Is this common? Or is it something that maybe doesn't matter when you get the kit? Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated

You should have 24 lifters and 24 rocket arms. Melling Brand if you can. No one store have all of them, they normally have to get them from other stores, at least in my area

Ok kinda been running into that problem as well. Next question tho are the exhaust rocker arms usually different than the intake because mine are. A bit confusing on that one.

6 Lifters and 6 Rockers per side...on a 6 cylinder (I have a 2012 Dodge Charger SE 3.6L). If you pause the video at 47:47 mins, count each rocker and each rocker has one lifter. Now that is just one side (Right side). The left side requires the same about of lifters (6) and rockers (6). A total of 12 Lifters and 12 Rockers...Hope this helps!

For people who mess up the timing accidentally while doing it the short cut way. I made this long form tutorial for them. I have another tutorial without removing the timing cover. There is always a method to my madness. 👨🏽‍🔧

@@AlexTheCarDoctor , the dealer just replaced 3 lifters on my wife's 2017 Dodge Charger that has less than 39,000 miles. I offered to pay for the other 21 lifters, but under the warranty they replaced only the 3 defective ones.

$1500 - $3000 depending on if you need Cams and how many you need.

Good question. I inspected the cams, they looked great. No need to have the customer spend unnecessary money if it didn’t need them.

You heard it here folks - you do NOT need to remove the front cover to replace the rocker/lifters! should you? Maybe. Otherwise, just take the cam caps off and rotate the cams a smidge to give you JUST enough room to sneak them out/in.

I did this and my tourq wrench didnt work properly to tourq the cam caps back to spec and now there is a huge vibration on the start up and it pretty much made the problem more worse than what it was befor

I said that in the video… but I’ll repeat it here. Some people could make a mistake and mistime the engine, or the timing got messed up, they’d know how to get back on track. I have a video coming up of the shorter way to do this job.

Chrysler needs to redesign a much better overhead cam… these rocker arms,cams & bearings Lacks Lubrication because the the oil prime screws get’s “Loose”! As the mechanic said it comes factory Loose…. Now what kind of mess is that! I had a couple of friends who went through this this is intentionally done to make people go to the dealership for high end repairs Or this should be a “a Recall”!!!

This DOES NOT APPLY to ANY Pentastar V6!!! Newer versions have different rocker on intake, lifters are different for EX/INT, different tools needed , etc....... A lot of wasted time in these videos talking......

These videos are for the older generation Pentastar. Perhaps I should have been more clear. At the time of recording I had high hopes that this problems were solved on the newer generation. And you could always NOT watch these videos 🤷🏽‍♂️

Yes, the newer Pentastar generation 3 engines with both VVT and VVL, use different rocker arms, lifters for intake and exhaust valve trains. Intake rockers are expensive.

You should of rolled it out and set it on fire. Such a dogshit engine. Sure! power output is pretty impressive, but failing rockers and flatten lobes and cracking or O-ring failed oil cooler/filter housings, seeing them fail shortly after 30k after being bought from the dealer lot. No anti-drain back valve to stop dry start, loose VVT bolts from factory, thermostat housing cracking after 100k. Don't forget the occasional P0420 code letting you know it wants to get high. 10 million+ of these engines out there, they all do the same damn thing and no improvements made from Fiat-Chrysler to stop this from happening. People ask me if the 3.6 is good, I tell them don't bother unless they like burning money on repairing the engine and buying premium oil constantly.

I'll give you the ticking rockers should be addressed by FCA/Stellantis, largely due to the recommended 5w-20 oil, but I've had Chryslers minivans since 1992. '92 - 212,000 miles, traded for '03 - 192,000, and traded that for '16 with just 70,000, now, and I've never had the problems you're whining about. If the plastics on a Gen 5 are scary to you, you can replace all the ones you mentioned with aluminum versions for a little over $200.
