How To Replace Light Seal On Film Cameras The Easiest Way (Olympus OM-1)

In this video, I show you my way, and the easiest way to replace the light seal on the Olympus OM-1 film camera. This should apply to almost all other kinds of film cameras that need the light seal replaced.
You'll need some affordable 2mm foam: amzn.to/3Q8iGvH
You'll also need some Contact/Rubber cement: amzn.to/3mtsjaK
Alternatively, you can also get the 2mm foam and rubber cement from your local art supply stores such as Michaels, Joann Fabrics etc. Remember, you don't need to spend money to buy special light seals, those low-density foams that are used for light seals don't last anyway. Just cut the foam to fit and it lasts longer.

I've seen people including Dave Hancock (great channel on vintage cameras) who use yarn for the long thin seals next to the shutter. I think it works fine and it's way easier, for me. The hardest one for me is the shutter dampers, It takes a little more dexterity than I seem to posses.

Perfect. I am in the process of replacing the light seals on my vintage camera collection and cleaning off all the old glue residue is quite time consuming, so having a replacement solution without glue is terrific.

This technique you've recommended worked perfectly for me. TY. This was MUCH better than the kits with adhesive as they are very difficult to apply in the tracks. Yours worked like a charm. 👍

The adhesive seals are a pita to work with. Interested in trying this, but I'm wondering how well the seals will hold up over time. Any update from anyone who completed this over a year ago?

Really depends on how often you shoot and change films. For me, after 2/3 roles in a few months, they are still working fine. If you change film weekly, you might want to do the job more often.

Can you not put a piece of black electrical on the outside perimeter of the door?

Not recommended because black electrical tapes deteriorates fast and will leave nasty residue on the camera damaging the cover

@@patrickhin4301 In a pinch, yes, but recommend you to replace the light seal after you finish shooting the roll of film already in the camera, assuming you need to seal the film door ASAP.

@@TheGizmoGarage My camera dates back from 1972 a parting gift from my dad going to university , i hardly use it until now , the camera works fine including the meter which i had to solder a piece of wire to the battery holder! The seals looks fine ,just wanted to make sure before using it for real hence my question! THANK YOU!

As a fellow lazy photographer I recommend gaffers tape, it leaves less residue, but really doing the light seals is easy, once you get the old crap off. Model plane paint thinner works better than alcohol,.

Hi is there, is there any chance that you know how to fix an OM-1n when using the film advance, the shutter automatically fires?

Sorry, I do not know why, I'm thinking the cocking mechanism probably needs to be serviced and is mis-aligned so shutter fires accidently when advancing.
