In this video I show you how to install a new Alternator in your Mercedes OM642 Engine, showing every step of the process!
*** Note, the Genuine Part# on the vehicle was A6422002215
As I explained in the video I purchased a Valeo 439546 Alternator which is the identical part to A6422002215, just literally minus the Mercedes sticker. This is where you can purchase the part:

Tools Used:
* E10 Socket
* T20 Torx Screwdriver: amzn.to/3w97cTL
* 17mm Socket
*10mm Socket
Specifically I am demonstrating this on my 2011 Mercedes ML300. This video will also apply to ML320, ML350 and the GL series wagons.

Great video as always. I think the old alternator was not charging as it should thats why you replaced it. From previous videos your w164 does not exceed a mileage of 300k km I think, so most probably the voltage regulator which costs 60 usd from Valeo would have fixed it. Had that happen to me on the w164 that I owned and the VR fixed it and it run great and still does after 20k km as I sold the car to a friend of mine. Out of curiosity if you have the old alternator just check the two brushes which wear over time.

Hi Mate, you are spot on in many ways! Yes my W164 has less than 300k, infact it is just 180,000 kms. I did think about replacing just the regulator, however the way in which my regulator failed was that it pushed excessive current into the armature winding making the alternator squeal. By the time I pulled over it was clearly burning the armature windings. My mistake I should have pulled over as soon as I heard the noise and pulled the D-Plug to the Alternator, but I was in a rush getting my son to school. Given the car is actually my daily drive I didn't want to risk just swapping the Regulator given how badly the alternator had smelled (burning smell) from as I mentioned what I believe is excessive current pushing through the armature in this failure mode. I was actually thinking about doing a seperate video about this, explaining what happened and why I did not just replace the regulator but explaining how to replace the regulator for the normal failure mode which you have highlighted. Would this be a video that you would be interested in? Cheers Drew
