Boy do I ever wish to God I had seen this video a few months back. My sister rode around with bad motor mounts for forever because she couldn't afford to have a mechanic fix them. You make it look so easy. I love your channel. I've shared your videos with my dad. You make everything very easy to understand. Not many people can explain things especially when it comes to cars that the average person. I truly appreciate your channel and I love that you engage with your audience. So this is just a big thank you from a fan. I have a 2009 Mustang V6 and I discovered you when I needed to replace the crankshaft pulley on my car. Thank you for all of your informative videos. I did my first engine mount (front one) a few years ago. Believe me, it doesn't take half hour like this video implies, it took me four hours or so. I had to partially remove the sway bar as well. I couldn't believe all the tools I had out for doing this seemingly straightforward job. I had to grind the edges of the replacement mount assembly to get it to fit in. I certainly felt a sense of accomplishment but wow, I hate to think what a more involved job would entail. That is why I am happier to pay a mechanic who knows what he is doing. I might take on more work again, just for the experience.

Before actually doing this on any "real" car, I'd look for a KZfaq vid showing how it's done with that particular type because every model has different stuff in the way and different ways of removing it. But hey, there's a lot of videos around - even for models that weren't built terribly often, so it's a good idea to encourage people to do their homework and then go for it.

I seen the tornado and reminded me of back in 71 April 3 . Even after spending 7 years on submarines that was the not the scarcest time. I was in the park in Louisville Ky at 3 pm and fishing in a creak . I was 10 and looked up green sky and a huge tornado heading my way . Lucky I was near a 20 foot tall and wide storm drain system that went back 2 miles . There was a ladder inside about 1/4 mile . Since I have been in it during heavy rains and it would clear up in a few minutes. I climbed up the ladder and looked out seen the tornado go by and it had 3 cars in it and a lot of trees. 1/2 hour later I got out and almost all the trees were gone . Even to all these years later the park is still not the same . I went back home 1/3 of home was gone lucky we had a tornado shelter in the basement. There was a apartment complex down the street was gone 132 folks died. I now live in the Catskills NY area for over 20 years only 1 mid sized tornado in all the time.

Great video, Scotty. Ive got a 1999 mazda 626 4-cylinder automatic transmission. Had to do transmission service because if a a case leak. Transmission has been rebuilt. Engine is great, does need a tune up, but after the car has been warmed up and when i change gears from park or neutral to reverse it thumps or clunks. Only going from a quick visual inspection the mechanic has said it is not the engine mount. With your video, along with other videos that have shown the same clunk or thump effect, i do suspect the motor mount(s) have worn out. Only had the front replaced, getting the rear replaced. Should ask mechanic to replace the first transmission mount thats under the battery and airbox. He did replace the one in front, by the radiator. It looks different than the one recommended in a auto parts store photo print out. Thanks again for the educating experience. Appreciate your time you take in making these videos.

Scotty saving the day 8 years later!!! I got the wrong mount because the system had it marked incorrect. Didn't notice until I took out the old one out. The first one I bought came with the bracket welded to the mount, and it was smaller and holes didn't line up at all. I needed one like this, where you keep the original bracket, and just get the cylinder. That bottom nut was tough, 15/16 inch, it's....nuts. Jobs is almost done. Hoping the vibration and cluncking is fixed.

Hey Scotty, first of all i wanna say im a huge fan. Ive never done any work on my car but thanks to your videos ive been well informed and know what to look for when i go to my mechanic. My 2000 Impala had a worst case of broken engine mounts. I replaced the two top engine mounts (3.8L V6) but i still get some vibration. One of the top engine mounts had been broken for at least two to three years and never replaced until i put my hands on the vehicle. Do you think there is permanent damage done to the engine? Or if i replace the two bottom mounts the vibration will completely stop? Im really worried, i dont wanna sell my car but i dont want to invest all my money in it. What do you recommend?

Bunkers101 To be fair he's not jacking the car up. He's only supporting the motor while replacing one mount at a time. The whole weight of the engine is never being placed on the oil pan. Maybe 1/3 at most. Personally I don't see any issue with what Scotty did here. How else would you suggest a DIY mechanic support an engine while changing mounts? I agree some wood between the jack and sump is a good idea it you're worried about scratches/dings. Personally I wouldn't bother.

I changed the passenger side mount today and it's fine to support the engine by the oil pan as lons as you use a wooden block. I was scarred but in the end everything was ok. Just lift the rear wheels to make it easier to remove the oil pan protector and support the motor near the oil pan board but not on it. To change the trans mount support it by the transmission. Thank you.

Changing mounts isn't too hard, unless the brackets or the bolts that hold the mounts/brackets are broken and in a hard to reach place way in the back of the engine and you have to weld onto them to fix them (so they don't do that again!). I had two of them with that problem, one where a bolt head busted through the bracket holding the mount (I had to have a thick washer welded onto where the bracket broke) and the other bolt holding the bracket busted off and I had to use a lefty drill bit and easy-out to remove, and the other mount where the bolt holes on the mount itself broke through. The odd thing is the rubbers on those two mounts were good. The other two mounts had the usual broken rubber.

May I make a suggestion? While KZfaq is great for having a lot of these 'how to' videos, it gets VERY frustrating when you need something specific, and all these videos have generic titles. Since so many vehicles are different year to year, and model to model, even within the same manufacturer, "How to replace a Motor Mount or Transmission Mount" really doesn't tell me anything. "Replacing a motor/transmission mount, Ford/GM/Toyota?Hyundai, etc 02-09" would tell us everything we need. Yours is a very informative video, but I don't have a Ford van.For those who do, this is the video they need. I have a 1997 Cadillac Eldorado, which is specifically what I searched for, so why am i here? Because there's a whole list with the same generic title you used, and I have to look through every one of them to find what I need. Thanks.

you made this video at the perfect time Scotty! thanks. I am not getting any clunking noise but if I shift (manual transmission) and hit the gas I will sometimes get some jerking, sometimes it is really bad. It is a 1998 nissan frontier 2.4 manual with the origional mounts 100k miles. Would new mounts be stiffer? Thanks and keep doing what you are doing! I enjoy the videos. The other youtube mechanics turn a simple job into a 50 minute video.

First Texas Honda in Austin Texas told me my "transmission was going bad". Took it to a mechanic and he said it was the engine mounts starting to wear out, but I could wait on it, no problem with transmission.

Hey Scotty, is it a good idea to jack the motor up using the oil pan ? Sounds like it could be bad news. Or is it perfectly fine ? Would putting a piece of wood between the jack and oil pan to distribute the force/weight be better? I have a '98 Acura CL that's gotta get done.

I have a mount with a severely ripped bushing and my front one has a small rip but I was thinking of filling the gaps in that one with polyurethane caulking. It would also help reduce my engine movement too as I have a turbo and more torque than stock.

Scotty , you are the best mechanic I've ever seen I have a 2006 mercury Milan 6cyl. Is it the same way to fix it ? This person called it a dog bone. I hope you get back to me doc.

dog bone mounts, or torque strut mounts, if its like mine - on the top in plain view- can be replaced without jacking it up. just remove the 2 bolts, remove and replace mount, install the 2 bolts tight and voila.

Scotty, what's your opinion on repairing the rubber with roof caulk or similar? Other videos show this but they don't say how long the repair lasts.

Remember about wright tightening torque of the screws when replacing parts in your car. In my car Espace 4, tightening torque are from 21Nm one screws to 190Nm the other! It is safety matters. Check your book.

Hey Scotty, Love the videos. Was wondering if you could shed some light on a few different problems. 1990 f150 xlt -Dies at idle if AC is on, stays running if AC is off -Heater does not get hot, AC blows cold as ice -Some light smoke out of exhaust after driving for more than 15 minutes, and only seems to happen when accelerating past 65 mph

Scotty you're the man! Any advice on replacing the left front mount on a 2011 Dodge Durango 3.6 AWD? The dealership says they have to remove the AWD to do this and it'll take 10 hours and 1250 bucks!! Hoping to tackle this myself
