Thanks for your video, it's very informative. How long does the battery for the nest thermostat will last and how do you charge it?

Thanks. Very clear explanation.

Great, very clear video. I have the exact same thermostat and want to replace it. Is this a millivolt system ? How do I determine that as I believe it wont work with Nest E. Thanks

So how did it end up going with the attempt at the 3rd Gen in the other zone? I suspect it didn’t work out without a C-wire....

Do these wires hold electricity? If so would i have to switch off the electricity on the PCB?

Hi Li - was the thermostat you replaced operate on line voltage or low voltage? I have something similar in my house and I have been told that it's line voltage and cannot operate the Nest I got. I'm wondering if maybe your system was low voltage already?

Thank you. I recently purchased a house with the old Honeywell Mercury switch thermostat. I was hoping I could transition to a Nest with only two existing wires. Your video confirms it is possible. 👍

Double check on the battery voltage though after you install, some two wire systems might not have enough power to charge the nest's build in battery

@@TheGizmoGarage how do you check the battery voltage?

Really great explanation! I have a quick question. How does the app handle having two thermostats? I just bought a house where one thermostat only controls heat and another controls a/c cooling. Would you have to set them independently in the app?
@TheGizmoGarage3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I have 2 nest and they show up independently in the app, and after setup, each will have their own features. For example one is heat only, and the other can be cool/heat, and each will have their own schedule

How are you making out with this thermostat. Is it still charging in the summer months when you turn the thermostat all the way down.
@MzLewis293 жыл бұрын
Wow, that seems very simple.

I thought you need C-wire for installation?

great video! do you know if I need to turn my power off at the circuit breaker before taking the honeywell thermostat off? I don’t want to get electrocuted!

I have the same old honeywell Thermostat, but the 2 wires are not color-coded, so I don't know what to do! Also the instructions for the NEST (different model) said that it was not compatible with wires that were capped inside the wall, which mine are.

I have two of these also (I have a boiler), so my A/C is on one and the Furnace (baseboard heat) is on the other. I can’t find a breaker in my panel for the A/C, but I found one for the fan/furnace. I used my voltage pen and discovered no electricity to the second (heat) thermostat, but I can’t find a switch that confirms no electricity to the A/C thermostat. Ideas? It trying to die today.

Best call a AC/Heating tech to come and check on wiring, and they can install proper charging/power cable to your nest if your existing system is not built for it.

How did you get this to work??? I have the exact same mercury thermostat that stopped working. Bought the Nest E after seeing this video. Connected the two wires and keep getting an error that I have no power coming through the red wire…

Are you able to disable the auto learning on the 3rd Gen?
@TheGizmoGarage3 жыл бұрын
I believe there is option to disable in settings, however I found auto learning actually quite useful in my case of knowing when to heat up the system and when to turn them off to save energy!

My wires are white and black instead of white and red. Is it the same thing? Thanks in advance
@TheGizmoGarage2 жыл бұрын
According to an article, blue or sometimes black wires is the Common Terminal (C), and usually, a blue or black wire is run to the transformer from this terminal to complete the circuit, and in some cases, provide power to the Thermostat. robotpoweredhome.com/thermostat-wiring-colors/

These Nest thermostats may work without a 3rd or common wire connection but the longevity of the Nest will be shortened without adequate power. If your old Honeywell thermostats only have two wires as described in this video then you may need a Nest C-wire adapter which consists of a power brick that plugs into a wall outlet and a wire that runs up the wall to the Nest thermostat. Not a very good installation method.

really depending on the output voltage of the heater, mine was outputting and charging at normal range so I wouldn't say it absolutely need a c-wire.
