I've just done this job and this video has proved invaluable, I would never have thought of winding back the solenoids with a 12 volt battery, incidentally you can use a battery charger set to 12 volts if you haven't got a battery to hand and yes you do have to do this otherwise you can't push the pistons back in. Many thanks.

Major tips for anybody wanting to quickly do this job with little tools, step 1 take of tire, step 2 use 13mm and Channel locks to hold one nut and wrench the outer bolt to take off the two main caliper bolts, step 3 take a star allen and take off the two bolts on the sides of the black parking brake unit once bolts are off carefully remove the black parking brake unit from the calipers and set aside take a t-40 and insert and turn the middle teeth hole by hand and turn clock wise till it stops turning, (it may take awhile but keep going till a definite stop) step four once it stoped turning put the black parking brake unit back on and bolt back onto caliper, step 5 slowly use a c clamp and draw in caliper piston back, step 6 remove old pads and insert new pads, step 7 place caliper over pads and put on the first two bolts on with same way usings channel locks to hold inner nut and tightening outer bolt with a 13mm, step 8 bolt on wheel, step 9 “pump brakes!” Don’t forget to pump the brakes with new pads, step 10 to (reset parking brake) turn car off hold down accelerator (gas pedal) and down on the parking break for 10 seconds then turn car on while still holding gas and parking break hold for 10 more seconds shut of car hold them down for 5 seconds then turn on car and hold for 5 more seconds then release both “its a long process but it will reset all lights that you created when manually turning the break gears and after that enjoy your new brake pads and you can thank the europeans for how hard it is to just change your brakes haha

Great video. I have changed lots of brakes and rotors but never any with the electronic parking brake. Loved the idea of the battery to retract the piston. Since the car battery is in the back I connected the wire to it and held it with clamps. Worked great. I pushed the piston too far out on one side but will deal with that tomorrow.

Of note: the carrier bracket bolts are stretch bolts, meaning one-time use only. They are specified as 100NM+90 degrees. They have a tendency to not hold if reused. The bolts are only a couple pounds each.

Very useful video, thank you! Just a few things I found made my life easier doing this job. An alternative way to remove any of these pesky Audi/VW electrical connectors, that requires no tools, is to push in on the connector, then push down on the retainer, pull back and it comes right off. This is shown in this video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g7yGetd439adh30.html. Instead of the battery to retract the parking brake, you can remove the two screws (T30) holding the brake motor on, rock it a bit, and it comes right off. Then, using a T40 turn the part that is left attached to the caliper clockwise until it stops. Then use your preferred method to push the piston back in (check fluid reservoir before doing this or you may overflow it). When all is back together (pads in, caliper on), you can take up the slack in the parking brake by turning the parking brake screw counter clockwise until it is just snug, then reinstall the brake motor, making sure that the motor shaft lines up.

I'm guessing it's so you can trick the computer. So you don't get a brake fault code. Having the parking brake on and then unplugging the connector, and retracting the motor with the battery, tricks the computer. It doesn't see the actuation of the motor. So the computer sees it as on the whole time.

It doesn’t retract enough, if you watch it’s 5-10 seconds of retraction on here, when you remove the handbrake it’s only 1-2 seconds so you can see it’s only moving enough to back off the pads
