The starter can be passed through side of the wheel well by removing one brake line bracket (and the wheel/tire). Great price on the starter. Very well done video. Mechanic's narration is just right, not too much, not too little.

i have an 07 FJ. I have found all your videos very helpful. I will say, the underside of that FJ is toast. It has seen some severe weather for sure.

Thank you for the video. I had to replace the starter twice due to quick failure of the first replacement, and I found on the second try that at least on my 2008, there was zero need to do any of the loosening shown or to pull up from the top. No problem simply undoing the cables, two bolts, and battery ground wire to the transmission and pulling and re-installing entirely from underneath. I really recommend trying that first, much much easier and faster. Perhaps on some FJ's it won't go, hence the harder procedure shown, but on mine it did very easily.

I watched several videos to replace the starter on my '07 FJ. Your's looked the most promising. I followed all of your steps and it worked out perfectly. But that top bolt was a total PIA. Thank you so much for created this carefully produced and accurate video.

Great video. I just replaced my daughter’s starter on her 07 FJ and I really appreciated the advice to take off that bottom shield. I didn’t have the luxury of a lift, so it gave me a lot more options to access the starter. Two things: I tried using a 3/8 ratchet on the lower mounting bolt and nearly stripped it trying to break the tension. So I moved to a 1/2 breaker bar with 14mm socket and it worked like a charm. Secondly, I was able to drop the starter through the bottom. It was half Tetris and half patience, but no problem.

One starter lasted 13 years the other 3-5 years tops. Big difference

Fyi...I was able to get my 2007 starter out from the bottom pretty easy after removing the negative battery cable off the block of the engine, and didn't even have to pull off the cover shield on the bottom.

Thank you and I have a 2010 4runner with the 1GR-FE V6 engine as the FJ Cruiser, my 4runner is a 2WD, and your video, is really the only one that is close on how to replace a starter on one of these engines, my question is this, is this FJ that you were working on, is it a 4WD? I think it is but I am not 100% sure. I understand that on a 2wd, one has better accessibility to the starter. Is this the case?

Were you able to turn starter around after putting down the hole backwards or did you have to pull it back out and turn it

Why is it constant battery power?

Takes a lot of juice to power it so it's best to have a hot wire running to it at all times

The "switch" that actuates the starter is on the starter, and it's purpose built to handle that current, they used to put them in the engine bay, but now all the starters are pretty modular. There is usually a fusible link as a final fail safe on the starter wire in case it shorts.
