Everyone, please note the factory service manual states: Do not break axle nut free with weight of vehicle on the tire/hub as it is likely to cause wheel bearing damage and should only be done in this manner is changing the wheel bearing is going to be performed at the same time. An electric/air impact gun will pop it off with wheel off ground, or have helper hold the brakes on while you crack the nut with wheel off the ground. Thanks to the poster for taking the time to show this otherwise textbook method of replacing the axle.

No problem. I just got done replacing my wheel bearing as it failed prematurely... I suspect previous owner may have loosened the axle nut with hub under weight as that side has different CV axle.

Can do this repair without removing wheel nut if you break the tapered joints on the spider, one for the steering arm and one the ball joint underneath. Just jack the spider up a little with car still on stands, remove split pins and nuts and tap the sides where the tapered joints are to break the tapered joint. Pull out half axel with spider attached together, tie brake calliper disc rotor up out of the way first. just be careful not to put any weight on brake hoses. Also to maintain wheel alignment as well as making position of cam shafted bolt, use a scriber to mark the position of the shock strut assembly relative to the spider( the bit with the wheel bearing in) before undoing the two nuts and bolts joining them together.

I am always jealous of the prices you pay for OEM parts in the USA. and. Or after market parts. Here in NZ even when I do the currency conversion, we seem to pay 2X plus what you do. An OEM price in New Zealand for one inner CV boot is $70nz. = $50 us (Subaru Impreza ) while you pay $20 US.for example. To me that seems a lot for something out of an injection moulding machine even if it is from Japan. Thank you for your very clear video.
@CompressorSurge
@CompressorSurge 5 жыл бұрын
That’s interesting. Is it due to additional taxes? Could you just order the parts directly from the US?
@zapszapper9105
@zapszapper9105 5 жыл бұрын
There is a value added tax of 15 % on every thing called g s t here. But it might be more due to smaller population and that you are dealing with a monopoly situation that mainly deals with a well organised trade as opposed to retail customers like me. Yes you can buy stuff on ally Barbra express, eBay, Amerzone, etc if they freight to N Z , But usually freight is quite a bit and I need to use the vehicle so can't afford to wait. I am not a professional mechanic, just DIY with half a doz cars. I Did by a electrical Klein clamp meter from States much cheaper than it is sold here too.

@CompressorSurge
@CompressorSurge 5 жыл бұрын
I would assume it’s similar to replacing the inner boot. Removing the axle from the car is pretty straight forward for the most part. Once it’s out it shouldn’t be too difficult.

Hey man, my outer right hand CV axle has begun badly leaking grease, there is a grinding noise while turning and skweak while driving, would it be worth just replacing the boot or the entire cv axle? Cheers
@CompressorSurge
@CompressorSurge 5 жыл бұрын
I was able to just replace the boot and it’s been fine since I fixed it. I’d suggest pulling the axle and taking a look at it to see if it’s damaged at all. If too much grease has leaked out you may have to end up replacing the entire axle.
@WILLS98
@WILLS98 5 жыл бұрын
CompressorSurge yeah, I think I’ve left it too late and will need to replace he entire axle, found some good deals for about $100 for a right hand front axle so it won’t cost too much more than a fix job anyway! Thanks for response

Hey, quick question. I have an 02 wrx wagon and I recently noticed a white smoke coming out of the hood scoop at stop lights. After further looking, the smoke is a whitish color and its coming from the turbo area. I was wondering if you have any idea what it could be? Could the pcv valve possibly be leaking onto the downpipe? There is also a slight oil leak so it could be turbo oil return tube. Where would you recommend i start looking for a leak?
@CompressorSurge
@CompressorSurge 6 жыл бұрын
White smoke is generally related to coolant. Do you notice any coolant leaks when your park your car? Have you worked on the car at all recently? I'd check some of the hoses to see if you have a coolant leak somewhere. As for the leaks around the turbo, is it near the feed or return line? You might want to check the lines for cracks.
@imua808
@imua808 6 жыл бұрын
There is no visible coolant leak. I just changed the oil and installed a catback in the past 2 weeks. There was a lot of wetness (from the oil leak) under the passenger side of the car. I wasn't able to take a good look as to where the oil is coming from, but i was thinking it could be the oil return line. Ive been periodically checking the coolant overflow reservoir, and the level has gone down quite a bit. Should I start by removing the tmic and taking a look at the hoses under there?
@CompressorSurge
@CompressorSurge 6 жыл бұрын
Sounds like two separate issues. I wouldn't be surprised if one of the oil lines has a small crack in it. If you pull off the TMIC that will give you enough room to inspect everything. How is the oil level? Are you losing a lot of oil as well?
@imua808
@imua808 6 жыл бұрын
The oil leak isn't too bad. Maybe a drop or two on the ground when i park in the garage. I constantly check oil level, cause the last thing i want is to spin a bearing! Thank you for all your help. Ill let you know what happens when I pull off the TMIC
@CompressorSurge
@CompressorSurge 5 жыл бұрын
