Today I’m replacing the crank case ventilation (CCV) valve on my 2000 BMW 540i. BMW recommends removing the intake manifold to complete this job, but this would create more of a headache than it's worth. I'm going to show you how to replace the CCV while leaving the intake mounted to the engine. Here are a couple of the symptoms that pointed me to the CCV:
1) A stumbling, or rough, idle on cold mornings.
2) Loud whistling/screeching noise coming from the engine bay.
3) Suction at the oil cap. Cracking the oil cap open releases the vacuum and temporarily eliminates the whistling noise.
4) Blueish or white smoke coming from the exhaust.
If you’re experiencing similar symptoms, chances are your CCV has failed.
This repair is for a 2000 BMW 540i, which is fitted with the 4.4L V8 M62 Engine. BMW used this engine across a couple of different vehicles, including the 1998-2003 540i (E39), 1999-2001 740i (E38), and the 1999-2003 X5 (E53). There are even some non-BMW vehicles with this engine including the 2000-2004 Morgan Aero 8, and 2002-2005 Range Rover (L322). So this repair will be the same for all of the previously mentioned vehicles.
There are (7) T30 torx bolts that mount the CCV to the rear of the intake manifold. In addition, there are (4) hoses that mount to the external face of the CCV. One of these hoses is secured with a crimped hose clamp that must be cut off and replaced with a small hose clamp.
Tools:
1. T30 Torx bit (w/ 1/4” drive adapter): www.amazon.com...
2. T30 Torx bit (w/o 1/4” drive adapter): www.amazon.com...
3. 1/4” Ratchet - Use this with the #1 T30 bit to extract the T30 torx bolts
4. 1/4” Wrench - Slip this around the shank of the #2 T30 bit to extract the hard to reach Torx bolts
5. Cutters - Needed to remove the crimped hose clamp
6. Phillips head screw driver - Needed to install new hose clamp
Parts:
1. (1) Vaico CCV: www.ecstuning....
- Mfg PN: 11617501563
2. (1) Victor Reinz CCV Gasket: www.ecstuning....
- Mfg PN: 11611729728
3. (7) M6 x 1 mm x 25 mm Hex Cap Screws - Replace the (7) T30 torx bolts that mounted the CCV to the rear of the intake with these
- I recommend taking one of the T30 torx bolts that you removed to the fasteners aisle of Home Depot or Lowe's to verify verify proper thread dimensions.
4. (1) Small hose clamp - Replace the crimped hose clamp with this
- I recommend you pick this up at your preferred auto parts store.

@@martinwellmaker6945 Mm… the diagram I referred to is at 5:25. If you’re looking for a larger version, I Googled “e39 540i intake diagram” and found a few examples. RealOEM has a nice parts list with their image.

Good video. Want to add something though. They are not T30 torx. They are Ribe6. This is why so many people strip them.

There is a simpler way to replace pcv. You dont have to unscrew the body from the engine. On the new purchased pcv, take time really and with maximum caution slide off the cover. It has latches. Work every latch one by one, don't rush. If you damage it you are toasted, do it really slowly, maybe use hair-dryer to soften the plastic, but not too much. The new cover with new membrane inside is removable that way. Dont forget about spring inside. Don't buy very chip ccv as the quality of a membrane is a key there. On the car, gently using screwdriver or any pry tool peel off the round cover that holds the membrane inside. Work the laches. Use a torch. Get a good lighting the. Feel free to damage some latches on the cover as it's going to be replaced and thrown away. Install new cover with membrane and spring and you're good to go.

That’s a good advice. This method takes like 15 minutes or something at max. It’s really easy and you also eliminate the possibility of the tube going into the oil seperator going loose

@@E38Bimmer35 Exactly, and it is not even my idea. Other people have done it that way. The key is to really really take time with the new pcv. Maximum caution.

Good question. Haven't had any problems since the install, but I do notice a slight whistle from the engine bay when I go WOT. It's not loud and I'm not even 100% sure it's the CCV, just something to keep in mind I guess.

A great misconception is that those are T30 torx bolts. They are not. They are Ribe #6 bolts. That is why it is so easy to strip these.

Your info is slightly wrong. Your motor is a TU which means technical update. They started using it 2000, which means all the others before it had idle control valves and no vanos.
