BMW i3 models with a range extender have a small gas engine and a small fuel tank to increase vehicle travel distance from 150 miles to 200 miles per charge. Inside the range extender fuel tank is a fuel tank pressure sensor. BMW states the sensor is a combination pressure and temperature sensor, however I have only seen pressure sensors installed on these models. Always confirm with the latest parts information. The internal seals inside the sensor fail over time and will set related fault codes.
Today we’re working on a 2017 i3 with a range extender and it has the following stored fault codes. I’ve already tested the sensor and it is faulty, so let’s see how to replace it.
Before beginning, familiarize yourself with BMW’s safety instructions for working with electric vehicles, available in BMW’s up to date repair information. All work on electric vehicles is to be performed by specially trained personnel.
