Here is how to replace the ignition coil on a GMC Safari Van or Astro Van with a 4.3 liter V6 engine. The igntion coil on Safair and Astro vans is really easy to get to and replace. You can do it yourself.

Check the resistance of the coil. Also hear its a good idea to replace ignition control module at same time

Amazing technical terminology. Calls the rivets "studs" and then "pins"... drills 'em out instead of grinding off the heads... and I really lost it when he greased up that "ferrule"!!!!

Hello, I am putting a tachometer in my 2000 gmc safari. The instructions says one wire goes to the chassis ground and the second wire goes to the output side of the ignition coil. My question is, is the output side the front clip or the rear clip?

Try the Crank sensor. I had the same problem. It does seem like a fuel problem but it was the crank sensor located at the bottom of Distributor Cap You remove the clip on front of cap, remove 2 screws that hold the sensor, and crank the engine until sensor is in position to lift out. (There is a notch that allows this after you crank the engine about 3 or 4 times. To eliminate the fuel issue, spray a little starter fluid in the breather assembly. I had that problem first.

thanks.. what happened with my safari is that some time shows P0300 code multiple misfire but then disappear. it's hard to started sometimes.

Nix that very last statement in the video. Test start it before you put every thing back together just in case the 'new' part is a lemon.

My van is having a starting problem that makes me crank it about 8-10 times before it starts.(starts normal after the initial start) Could this (video) possibly be the problem? Also, you wouldn't happen to know the locations of the knock sensor on the driver side? I have a brand new knock sensor and a dangling wire that goes to it but can't seem to find the screw-in location in my 95 GMC Safari van. PLEASE HELP! I'm hoping this is the reason why my engine light is on.

I have a 1990 GMC safari van. I was driving and it just cut off so I pulled over and now it just won't start again. Did the fuel pump & filter still won't start. Help please

Check the fuse box for blown fuses. Smell the exhaust for gas when you crank it over, to see if it has fuel. Pull one plug wire and put an extra spark plug in it, ground it on the engine block and see if it has spark.

I have a 1990 Astro, which has been sitting for years. I want to fix this and let my son use it for work. Any Idea's where I start. Never worked on a vehicle that sat for 7 years, always on one that recently went down. What do I heed to keep an eye out for, ect?

I would start with basic tune up things. Check the cap and rotor, and replace them if they are worn. Try to find out if anything was broken, which caused someone to park it 7 years ago. It is also a good idea to clean the egr valve. I made a video showing how to do it,

I too have. 1990 astro van ant it's been sitting for 6 years and me and my family want to restore it. But the weathering strips on the front windshield have gone bad and that lead to mold onto the front of the roof cloth

does the icm have too be grounded for it to work gmc i got my new one hanging cause i cant get the old one off will it be ok?

I don't know if the bolts that hold it on ground it or not. I'd guess that if your car runs with it like that, it will be OK.

My 2002 wont start after a rain. I am not sure if it is the coil or the distributor cap or both. Any thoughts?

Water in the distributor would make it stall, but the distributor is so well protected from the rain in the engine compartment, that I would look elsewhere for the problem. Check your battery terminal connections and make sure they are clean. It's possible water gets in through the grill and causes some electrical problems closer to the front of the engine.

***** Turned out to be the cap and rotor. Replaced those and it cranked then purred like a kitten. No water in it. Just way overdue for a change. Thanks!

is that the one that gets moister in and the van stops workig ...because everytime it rains are van stops working .

It probably isn't the coil, but might be the spark plug wires. It is hard to tell when water makes an engine stop working, because an engine has so many electrical connections on it.

Don't think it's the fuel pressure. I just put in a new fuel pump & filter, also replaced the fuel injectors & the 2 fuel lines. I'm not a mechanic, I just learn while I go. Just can't figure out why it crank starts. I'll figure it out one way or another, thanks anyways.

My key to start the van is stuck. As in when I start and park, I cannot turn the car off because the key won't go down. I really really need help with this because my car just stays on and I cannot turn the car off and key gets stuck in ignition. Want to know how to fix this or to the best place to get it fixed. Please reply!!! 2015

I have never done an ignition switch replacement so I don't know how hard that is to do. Before that, you should try putting some graphite powder in the lock to lubricate it. That might get it unstuck. I have used it on other locks with success.

+Felix Flamenco Fuentes it varies. Sometimes the car won't start at all because it doesn't make any spark. Other times it runs when the coil is cold, but when the coil heats up, it stops making spark.
