How to replace the seat belt on a FJ cruiser

This is a how to video, on replacing the driver side seat belt on a 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser. In researching this problem, I’ve found this is a common failure point of the FJ. I’ve also found there has been a recall on some FJ’s for the seat belts, so make sure to contact your local dealer to confirm if there is a recall on your particular FJ before buying a new seat belt. Also note, before buying a new seat belt they can be specific to your particular FJ, so it’s also a good idea to contact your local dealership to verify the part number with your vin number prior to ordering.

I also want to thank you for this video. In my 2007 model, my belt was stuck in the fully retracted position. I bought the new part. When I took the new part out of the box, the belt would not extend. The instructions with the part warned to disconnect battery. As I installed the new part, I did have to reconnect the power and turn the ignition on for about 10 seconds before the system powered up the first time and let me pull out the belt. After that, it was very easy. The instructions also explain how to detonate the belt system to "safe" it. The dealership where I got the part warned me to bring them back the old part, so they could safely dispose of it. Thank you again.

I'm not going to critique your video skills, actually for a one man band you did an exceptionally good job. Only thing I would add is both bottom and top main bolts have to be torque to spec. Great job!

How do you get the new seat belt to extend to spec? It won’t pull out for me.

You must have something not hooked up. If the electrical connector isn’t hooked up or the door isn’t closed all the way that could prevent it from extending.

Next time you make an instructional video, have the camera pointed at the area you’re working on. Let us see exactly what you’re loosening/tightening etc. Looking at your back doesn’t provide much assistance.

Also, remember where you bought the part. He is installing a part that people are trying to source for an affordable amount (not from the dealer) and he says he doesn't remember where he got it from.

Unfortunately I can’t answer that. You have to get it based off of your vin. I took my vin to the dealership had them run it so I could get the part number. Then I ordered it online, saving me a cooler hundred bucks.

How did you remove the bolts from the door? Was that an impact wrench. I’ve had the hardest time removing the seatbelt housing.

Yes. An impact. A cheat bar or a breaker bar work fine too. The factory use loctite so they’re really stuck.

I used an impact. But a breaker bar should be plenty. Those aren’t meant to come out so they red locktite them. That means those things are really in there!

Sorry I have no idea. Every dealer is going to be different. My local dealer is almost always double or more compared to what I can find from an online distributor. I still got genuine Toyota though. Thanks for watching.

Blue loctite. Red probably should have been used but all I had was blue. Either way it’s not coming out, so I figured blue was good enough.

I couldn’t figure out a way, it’s all sealed up to keep people from messing with it. I thought maybe I could just clean it, but I couldn’t find a viable way to get to it.

It’s going to be vin number specific. The process is the same yes, but the part number is going to be specific to your FJ and options. I hope it helps. Thanks for watching!
