In part 1 of a two part series the front end the front end of a 2012 Subaru Legacy with a 2.5L engine is torn down for replacement of the timing belt, water pump, tensioner, 3 idlers and the thermostat. This procedure may be similar for other Subaru models with this engine made between 2006 and 2014 such as Impreza, Forester, Outback and Baja.

Thank you so very much for this video. It was detailed, accurate, and displayed the most important parts of this job. Although I'm a professional and a certified master technician, I hadn't done a Subaru timing belt in years and after replacing all of the pulleys and the tensioner, the belt was absolutely driving me insane when attempting to route it, even following factory procedures. Clipping the belt to the sprockets using the marks from the manufacturer, and INSTALLING the bottom passenger side idler LAST was EXTREMELY CRITICAL! IMPORTANT: It should noted that one of my marks was not really there from the manufacturer and it should be further noted that from the passenger cam to the crankshaft was 47 teeth and from the crankshaft to the driver's side cam was 44 teeth in my application [2011 Forester. Thank you again so much, you made this owner/technician's night a whole heck of a lot easier! 🔧😊

Great video!! Love is a Subaru. Those motors are bulletproof as long as you change timing, water pump. I also do the valve cover gaskets at same time. Figure if I’m doing timing/pump Subaru are notoriously famous for them leaking. But I always tell people if you do PROPER maintenance the 2.5 is easily 300k plus.

Yeah…not mine. Blown head gasket 130k and that was with the MLS gaskets.

@@dennisbrown1811 replaced my head gaskets at 76k on my 2007, we’ll see how long she goes with good maintenance, it was my grandmas car.

If you have a standar transmision, just set it in gear and you wont need the cranskhaft tool. You only nees it if you have automatic

Took me forever to get the harmonic balancer off on mine. Impact wouldn’t work(Not enough space) so I had to use breaker bar. I was able to stick 2 3/8 extensions in the little holes in the pulley at an angle and stuck a 36” pry bar in between down to top of exhaust prying off of it. I was able to put all of my weight into a 3 foot breaker bar to get it off. It was super stuck on there

I have a 2011 forester. Pump failed. Can I replace just the pump from the bottom without taking everything else off? I know 2011+ foresters have timing chain that doesn't need to be changed.

Hello and great video! I bought a 2004 Impreza 2.5L turbo wagon that had the original motor pulled and replaced with a 2.2L from an unknown Subaru model. The kid pulled the 2.5 and put the whole 2.2 with its intake and manifolds into the car. It is difficult to start and when it does start it backfires a lot and has very poor power and stalls also. Someone online thought I should swap the 2 cam sprockets and crank sprocket to fix the issue. Assuming the motor is good, since he bought it from a local reputable Subaru mechanic, should I remove the old 2.5L's two cam sprockets and the crank sprocket, and put them on the 2.2L block? I have the old motor, everything but the heads.

Hi brother, I have a question and I hope to find a solution or find a solution to the problem. I have a 2011 Subaru Autoback and suddenly the water hus came out of its allotted place and I installed it and then came the same day. What do you expect, is it a thermostat that did not open or what?

hi just wanted to ask. if you don't have that special tool to remove the harmonic balancer, what kind of approach are you going to do in order to remove it? thank you!

I think you are talking about the holding tool used to remove the crank pulley bolt. Anything else that would keep the balancer from turning while you break the nut would work. the harmonic balancer itself was removed with a combination of tapping and pulling. I would get the tool for this job.

Did you actually replace the water pump, or just the thermostat in the water pump? If you replaced the pump, why remove old thermostat?

We replaced the water pump. The new water pump did not come with thermostat.

Great video BUT DO EXTREAM CAUTION!! This video didn't cover the most important part of replaceing the belt. Didn't show the pulley alignments. WATCH OUT DO NOT rotate crank shaft with out the belt. Make sure aligments of pulleys are confirrmed and set prior belt removal. will kill your engine in an instant if this is improperly set.

You should look it up. There may be differences between your 2008 and the 2012 shown in the video.

Wikipedia is often useful for this. If you look up the Forester it will list the engines used and often other models that used the same engine.

I take it you mean the crank pulley holding tool. The owner bought it and had it ready for the job, so I don't have the link. It should be easy to find by searching "subaru crank pulley holding tool"

If all goes well and you have parts and tools on hand (and maybe a helper), I estimate 4-5 hours.
