It’s usually good to use silicone, helps keep the oil inside at those spots on the valve cover gasket

Might wanna check your vvt solenoid for leaks too. If your valve cover gasket was that toast, the one around the vvt solenoid is probably just as hard.

@@billmurray6889 It's the little black thing that looks like a battery sticking out of the forward facing side of the engine block next to the intake, yes. DO NOT pull it out unless you suspect the seal to be leaking, or you are having idling or stalling problems.

Head gasket is an entirely different animal of a job. Not regular maintenance.
