Thank you @UndergroundShow! Your "3 o'clock" explanation got me on the right track. In case anyone else is having a hard time understanding why their wipers go down (or counter clockwise) at first, it's all about the direction of the almost flat piece of metal that the bolt (shown being loosened at 4:06) is tightening down on. BUT, it is the position WHEN YOU TIGHTEN THE NUT that matters. I kept trying to align the linkage after the bolt was tightened. Pay close attention to when it is being assembled and tightened at 6:44. That almost flat piece should be running parallel to the motor when you tighten down the nut, otherwise things won't be aligned properly. Once you get the nut tight enough that the linkage turns the motor, you can move it around to tighten it down good (like to get a ratchet in there.) Just put it back at 3 o'clock to be safe after doing so. ;)

I found the same problem. When I unscrewed the nut with the 13 mm wrench, the shaft turned and when I installed the new transmission I forgot to turn it back, so when I was done, I turned the wiper on and let it parked itself, when I installed the wiper arms, they actually when back a bit and you could hear a clicking sound when it hit the cover. so I unscrewed the nut, parked the wiper motor, reinstalled the plate horizontal and bingo it worked great. Great video.

Once the transmission is bolted in place, take the wiper arms off. turn the wipers on and then off. Now position the arms at their resting position at the bottom of the windshield. That should help.

Great video! I had never done any work on cars before and was able to replace the broken wiper transmission for a total cost of $50 ($35 for the replacement transmission, and $15 for a tool to pop the wipers off). A couple of notes to others trying this themselves: 1) After unbolting the wipers it is likely they'll be stuck on, and you need a special tool for pulling wiper blades. Available for $10-15 at places that carry auto parts and supplies. 2) The huge issue I had, which others have mentioned, is getting the transmission lined up properly before bolting it back onto the car. Elsewhere I've seen mention of a line etched in the wiper motor bracket, but didn't have this on mine. So when I first put everything back together the wipers parked in the middle of the windshield, and I had to take everything apart again. So before bolting the transmission to the motor, work the transmission back and forth and find where it ends the downstroke (where the motor "parks" the wipers). Then bolt it to the motor in that position. You can make very minor adjustments when you re-attach the blades. But VERY IMPORTANT for the transmission linkage to be in the correct postion before bolting everything back together.

Thanks for posting these instructions. I'll echo the comments below (like from Thom Porter) about the thing being in the 3 o'clock position. I ended up installing everything back together and had the wipers trying to go down instead of up. I then removed everything and changed the position of the metal piece that that the wiper motor spins, then it worked.

Replacement directions are easy to follow. Found that by closing hood and relieving tension on wipers by popping them up they came off easier. Also, if you need the specialty tool they can be rented at some parts stores.

We liked the video, was easy to follow. We did run into the same issue someone noted below; there is no note in the video that explains which direction the arms should be facing when attaching the unit to the motor. Our wipers were either stopping in the up position or trying to wipe into the hood. We took it apart, and changed the direction of the arms (see video at 6:54), Thank you for posting instructions on video, it was super helpful (more than the printed instructions we got off another website.)

Thanks a lot for posting this video. I didn't realize so many Saturns had this problem. My wiper had the broken plastic piece. I couldn't figure out what was wrong or how to fix it(not very car savvy, didn't know there were those stupid plastic caps covering the bolts).Every time it snowed or rained I dreaded going out, because I knew my wiper would hang off the side of my car and not work.I will probably be ordering a new wiper transmission from 1aauto. Thanks for the video and the part from 1AAuto.com. I did find a problem with the instructions relative to the motor linkage orientation to the transmission linkage. When I followed the video images, the result is that the wiper arms would start rotating in the wrong direction (bad thing!) I figured out the correct orientation, and all worked great. I noticed that others seem to be experiencing similar issues. Overall, I appreciated the video to help guide me through the repair. Thanks again.

The issue could be with the actual bushing inside the linkage binding up and causing the wipers to act up. You might want to replace the entire assembly just so you have a completely fresh unit inside there.

Thank you very much for this step by step video... Wife and I have this car, and yes, the plastic part was broke. The new is made of metal. The only problem I had, was the wiper pulley. Just finished changing the linkage on my 2003 Ion-3. The video was very helpful. However, I just want to elaborate on what Thom Porter said below. The orientation of the flat piece when you connect it to the motor is critical. If you do it exactly like in the video the wipers will run backward. Two things to look out for; one, before starting reassembly run the motor so that it is stopped in the resting position. Two, as Thom says, the flat piece should be at three o'clock when viewing the motor assembly from below with the electric connection on the right and the round part of the motor to the left of the bracket. Taking a picture of the whole thing just after lifting it out of the car will show you how it should go back. (assuming that the wiper arms were in the resting position when you started and not stuck somewhere in the wipe cycle). What I also noticed (at least on my 2003) is that there are two white dots on the windshield that indicate where the tips of the wiper blades should rest when the system is off. It took the guesswork out of repositioning the arms on reassembly.

It could be an issue with the motor at this point since they the stop is internal to the motor and not the transmission.

as long as there is some place to attach the transmission to the motor and it also holds it in place (clip nut, bolt or anything else), you should be fine.

Just noticed my wipers not operating right . The wiper bolt where it fits I is plastic and the whole plastic base seem loose as the blades get stuck mid way . . Now if I follow these directions I noticed that this Ion don't seem to have that plastic base . I wish I could text you a picture ..

My wiper is going past the window on drivers side and flopping about. I had my blades changed at pep boys and they were slamming down so loud i rarely used them. It rained today so i had to. The wiper flew padt my drivers side widow and fell off the car while i was driving. The arm was stuck past the window. Do i need one of these parts?

hey @Andysign77 . I just replaced my 03 saturn ion windshield wiper assembly and had the same issue. There is a yellow rectangular metal piece that connects the motor bolt to the wiper assembly. When the motor is at rest (wipers down position) the yellow piece should point directly to the right (3 o'clock if you are standing infront of your car looking at the motor) It looks like when I put on the new assembly I moved the position of that piece. The bolt I'm talking about is shown at 4:06

When you were done with this video, did the wipers work correctly? I set mine up just like this, in the 3 o'clock position and the wipers would have gone down first. Unless your motor runs counter-clockwise. I had to set mine at the 9 o'clock position as my motor runs clockwise facing the arms side when the whole unit is out.

Hello, Your video is very helpful, I have replaced the motor and the transmission, the transmission and everything works WITHOUT the arms attached, but when you put the arms on it won't work, it WILL work with the passenger side arm only, but not with both installed, if you remove the arms, everything runs as it should, but not with the wiper arms attached. I am at a loss as both the motor and transmission are brand new, any ideas? Thanks

Thanks for this. Helped a lot. However I've run into a bit of an issue. When I turn the wipers on, they seem to want to go counterclockwise first, and then clockwise. So when the wipers are on, they just go to the bottom of the glass and stop. Any idea why? I'm a novice at this :)

Is the wiper arm removal tool you used for the repair available on 1AAuto? I purchased one elsewhere [the screw kind], but it's proven ineffective in pulling the arm. I noticed you used one which allows you to attach the wrench in order to generate more torque. I believe I need something similar in order to pull these very stubborn arms.

When you say "make sure the linkages go back underneath correctly" in 7:30 - 7:35 of this video, do you mean for that car in the video? When I say for that car, not the model or anything, but just that particular car. I've noticed some people are having, I guess what's called homing problems. My old wiper transmission broke on the mount part of the driver side. The motor and wiper arms are just fine. I was able to get a used wiper transmission and I put the motor back on correctly. I have my wiper arms both wiping in the same direction in unison. My problem is that when the wiper arms do get done wiping, they rest at a 45 degree angle.. Or any other angle but down after messing with the wiper transmission for so long. Is there was a way to know, for sure, that I have my wiper transmission parts maneuvered just so, so that when I do turn on my wipers, the wiper arms wipe from the bottom up of the windshield and then rest back at the bottom of the windshield. I've watched this video pretty closely and can't think of what I am doing wrong that the wiper arms won't rest at the bottom of the windshield. Any help is very much appreciated.

I found out that while the wiper gears that move the wiper arms have grooves, the windshield wiper arms also need to have grooves in them to have a grip, so that the wiper arms can move with the gears. If the sections on the wiper arms, that you bolt to the wiper transmission gears are stripped, they won't move appropriately. I'm going to buy new wiper arms and see if that works. If the wiper arms still don't lay down flat, it's probably still a linkage problem. Will keep everyone updated.

OK... so I finally found a windshield wiper transmission at a scrap yard that wasn't cracked on the plastic part... I went through several... and installed it on my Saturn... it works but when I turn the wipers off... they stop halfway on the windshield... how do I remedy this if possible... the car I got it from was a smashed to hell 06 and I have an 04...

Good video but one thing that should be noted is the placement of the linkage when putting on the motor. This needs to be in the correct spot or your wiper will not home out.

I was trying to knock some debris off of my driver side windshield wiper and when I pulled on the arm, I heard a loud clunk and the sound of something falling through the interior of the car and now the arm is not aligned properly in the hole through the weather stripping. The windshield wiper move upwards at a normal rate but don't seem to want to lower on the driver side only. Is this a linkage issue or do I just need to remount the wiper?

I bought this part from you guys and installed it with what I thought was no problem. The problem I'm having is the The nut that secures the crank arm to the motor keeps falling off. I've tried it three times. It works until I get everything back together and the wiper arms back on then it comes loose again. So frustrating.

The problem ended up being that the crank arm on your linkage system was too loose. Unfortunately it ended up costing me another $40 for a mechanic to tell me this.

I went through a car wash and it yanked the wiper off... put a new blade on but it damaged the inside its loose and jiggles when I try to use them the driver side arm goes 180° to the left off the car... do I need the whole assembly that you replaced in this video?
