I saw another video that showed how to do this by keeping the door closed, taking the tension off the spring (no simple chore), loosening the cable drum, etc. etc. Then I saw your video... MUCH simpler. I had both cables installed in about fifteen minutes and it all now works perfectly. I think that other video was just trying to scare people away from a simple job. Thanks.

These videos are great; they have saved me money and time! I recently had to replace my torsion spring on my door and didn’t want to call in a company to do it like other time the door broke. Through your site I learned everything that I needed to know about how to buy the right torsion spring, level the door and balance the door. Unfortunately after I did all of that and was testing the door the starting motor capacitor went out on me and I had to place that too. The door works like new.

Thanks a lot. I got quoted $145 - 275 by garage door repair companies just to replace cables. Saved me a lot of money. If you plan to do this DIY, make sure you have at least 2 vice grips, 3 would be ideal. 2 to clamp both rails and 1 for the bar where the pulley is. The cable comes in pair so I did both sides. They're $7+ @ home Depot. Very easy to do as long as you have a ladder. Again, Thanks and more power to you.

Thanks for the tutorial. The process was well explained and at the right pace for me. My cable rusted at the bottom loop from winter salt and broke so I did not have to do the removal part. Before starting, the step I was most apprehensive about was slipping the cable back on the cable drum near the end. It turned out to be easy as there was little tension in the spring with the door open. I now question why some of the other video instructions prefer to do the cable replacement with the door closed. I'll continue to use the method in this video for my second door now that I have confidence on how to do it. Only one side needed to be done as the other had been replaced two years ago. The service technician should have done both then but never offered or recommended that. I just saved myself $120 labour for the one cable install that took 15 minutes. Thanks again.
@DDMGarageDoors
@DDMGarageDoors 4 жыл бұрын
We're happy to help, Phil! We usually recommend replacing both cables at the the same time, which is why they're sold in pairs, because they may not wear at the exact same rate, and so when one breaks, this just ensures that your cables are going to last for a longer period of time. We have found that doing the cable replacement with the door up and using the proper safety measures is just as effective as with the door down. There always may be some work that needs to be done to level your door after this, but that's typical of most replacements of garage door parts.

We agree with that thought, Greg! We usually recommend that when people are thinking about only replacing one, because they usually wear similarly and the second cable is likely not far behind the first in terms of how worn it is.

in australia it cost $140 to get someone out, then it costs $30 every 15 minutes, and they charge you $70 per cable. So the all-up cost to get someone to replace a broken cable can be $300+. A pair of 7-8" galvanized cables are available on ebay (but only UK sellers for some reason) for $10-$20, and this video is free. Thumbs up!
