Great video! The tips and warnings are very good. I had already attempted to install my new springs before researching help. It went very well up until I tested the door from the half way up position as well as the fully opened position. Not knowing that the cable from the drums had spun off, the door became crooked. A very difficult fix, but I did manage to reset everything and started over. I carefully watched your video and followed every step. Well, the same thing happened again while testing the door weight from the floor. I am not sure what's causing the cable to spin off the drums. My garage door setup is identical to the one you used in the video. Any pointers would be very appreciated. -Ken

Hi Ken! Thanks for trusting us to lead you through the process with this video. We're glad that you found the safety tips and warnings to be helpful to you, and kept you safe through the process. This may be a matter of not having the drums quite tightened enough, or not seeding the cable through the drum quite right. If either of these steps aren't done properly, they can cause the cable to spin off of the drums and the door to become crooked. You should check out our steps on reinstalling the hardware for your door when replacing your garage door springs at: ddmgaragedoors.com/diy-instructions/replace-garage-door-torsion-springs.php#reinstall These steps should help you to troubleshoot and figure out what may be awry with your door. Who would have thunk that such seemingly minor differences in wire diameter can make such a big difference. I found out the hard way. There was green painted on my springs to track the number of winds. I assumed that meant I had green springs. Also, I measured the length of the unbroken spring from end to end. Ordered and installed .243", 2" I.D., 33" long. Scratching my head when the door took off like a rocket, but didn't have enough wind at the top to keep the drum cable from jumping off the drum. Watched your video and measured my springs properly. I need .218, 1.75" I.D., and 29" long based on what was installed. Doh! Thank you for an excellent, concise, informative video!

On your site you sell two 4’5” struts to make a 9’. Can I put 4 of them together to make a 18’? I was a little concerned about the weight of having two connectors on it. If I can, I’ll go ahead and purchase now. Thank you for the well done video.
@DDMGarageDoors3 жыл бұрын
Hi Josh! It would add some weight, but it's really the cheapest way to do it, and it won't add that much more weight to the door than the longer strut would. A much more expensive shipping price would be what you would get if you bought (2) at the 8'10" length, so the two 9' kits combined would be a much more manageable price for shipping. Sorry for taking so long to get back to you, and we hope this helps! Thanks for watching!

@DDMGarageDoors3 жыл бұрын
Hi a non! We're glad to hear that this video was helpful to you! We hope that you are able to get your door to lower to the floor. Sometimes this stretch is what makes the difference in whether the springs lift the weight they are supposed to. @@DDMGarageDoors Thanks DDM for explaining exactly why this step exists (stretching spring after winding, see 13:20), and ANON for the question. That was my biggest question so far, as I've seen most others with videos omit this step, or even comment on why it is unnecessary or dangerous. What's the worst that could happen if a person does not do this step?
@DDMGarageDoors3 жыл бұрын
@@vanontom Hi Thomas! That's a good question to wonder. For one, if you do not stretch the springs out, the door may have a difficult time closing all the way, and you may have a gap on the bottom. This is because the shaft moves slightly as the door operates, but enough that if you don't stretch the springs, the coils will likely bind on each other, and cause the door to not be able to close all the way.

the spring on the right hand turn is 20" and the left is 22.25" is that possible or do i need to look for a missing piece on the broken right turn one
@DDMGarageDoors3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark! Yes, this is most definitely possible. Sometimes, repairmen will just use springs that they have available to them to match properly to the weight of the door, instead of going and purchasing a pair of matching springs for your door. These still work fine, but we still recommend that you purchase a matching set when you go to replace them. Here is a better explanation of why we recommend a matching pair of springs: ddmgaragedoors.com/diy-instructions/using-torsion-springs-with-different-lifts.php

We're not sure what you mean, Jinho. If your head isn't in the path of the winding cone as you are winding the spring, then you have done as you are instructed. Our employee here is standing off to the middle of the springs as he winds them, ensuring his head is out of the way of the winding cones. Your arms will be right around the winding cones, as they must be to be able to get a good grip on the winding bars you are using to wind and unwind your springs.

What if my floor is not leveled ? Will this adjustment fix the gap ?
@DDMGarageDoors3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ace! This should help to fix the gap in your door to the floor. The issue is, however, that this gap may be something that needs to be solved another way, because messing with the cables may just end up making the door crooked if there is too big of a gap. Some solutions are to get a larger seal that will cover the extra ground needed to take care of that gap or to attempt to get that ground more level, which is a lot more work.

Hello sir, excellent video. When my cable broke the door became kattywompissed. Its a large and heavy 18'x7' wood door from the seventies and is stuck. The pins started to pull out (not completely) because the other side is stuck on the bracket that holds the obstacle obstruction. recommendations? Should I try to jack up (since it is impossible to lift it) one end? If so, which side should be lifted? Thanks...
@DDMGarageDoors3 жыл бұрын
Hi Kris! This is a situation that should be addressed with extreme caution. We would recommend placing vice grips on either one of the tracks; this will help prevent the door from just crashing to the ground. You will definitely want to unplug the opener to ensure that nothing happens while you are trying to work on the door. It might be best if you follow a procedure similar to that of leveling your garage door to attempt to fix the cable discrepancies once you have replaced it. We would recommend that you attempt to replace the broken cable before you mess with the side that is unbroken. Again, this is a task that should be undertaken with extreme caution; it may just be best to call in a pro for a door that is this big and heavy.

Hi there! Normally, the time to measure your springs comes up when one of them breaks. If both springs are okay, you can either keep them wound, and follow the method shown in the video, or you can unwind them and measure them, making sure to measure the wire from end coil to end coil, and making sure to not measure the cones.
