Newer models that have electronic parking brakes and you need a scan tool put brake system into service mode to unlock rear brake calipers.

I did two rear E-brake jobs last week, didn't use a scan tool even though I have access to multiple manufacturers factory scan tool software. I used a lithium jumpstarter.

I did my rears on 2015 audi a3 with ebrake, and I didn't use anything like that at all. It all functions properly still too

You need 12v to attach to the sensor and get it to move either way by switching the positive and ground

Figured this out the way on my Malibu tore the fukin caliper and brake fluid started to leak, so I then had to not only replace the brakes but I had to drain the brake fluid to make sure to there was no air pockets and tbh I should’ve done that sooner but I also had to replace the whole damn caliper as well Bcs it was busted needles to say won’t be doin that again but that tool is a life saver not sure why only the rear ones require it tho and not the front

Spray light cost of WD40 or dab of silicon brake grease so the rubber piston seal doesn't twist & fail. Been there, done that.

I thinknthey twist because thats how the handbrake operates and it only works the rear . I have seen them on the fronts tho maby they have handbrake on the front wheels

I remember when that tool first came out on the Tool Trucks, I've literally owned one for 35/40 years....used it maybe 3 times. We called it a Rubiks cube.

That is also how you cause a low brake pedal due to rolling one.of the master cylender piston cups over .not to mention setting a abs code due to dirty fluid with particles that clog isolation valves in abs controll valve body. Never force fluid backwards through system.open bleeder.

Please explain if the turning with the tool is screwing it in or just allowing it to be pushed in. So is it a turn and push or turn and turn. About how many turns, a few or a few dozen? Thank you.

You have to push and turn. It doesn't have a screw it just allows the pressure to release so so sometimes it takes more turns than others

C clamp won't work on a rear caliper with the spring loaded parking brake. They need to be twisted into place. I tried using a c clamp and vise grips to twist but messed up the caliper

You can just put needle noses in the groove and twist just be careful not to let the tip slip and rip the rubber bushing around the piston

the first time I saw this type of piston was on a 2000 jetta. I freaked out and my neighbor said that's what you will find these days. back then we called this tool a Rubix Cube like the toy. I hate the piston design and would prefer the engineers that dreamed up this be burned alive.
