❤❤❤ you battery was not sulfated much, since it bubbles great on 10A.. i'd watch the battery temperature and if it would not come past say 45°C, i'd desulfate overnight. The cycles are not important you know, the battery temp is.. edit: as the internal resistance of the battery goes down, less volts are needed to get the same amps go in.. so you're right with the voltage.. that's why - if you want 101% desulfation - you need the last cycle at least 50A.. and i saw a guy who was doing this at 200A (i'd personally not go that high)

If you want to restore lead acid battery's to new condition read The Automobile Storage Battery Care And Repair by 0. A. Witte. It was written in the 1920's but is still useful today on lead acid batteries, has electrolyte SG charts, internal plate cadmium test information, and full tear down and rebuild instructions.

Putting a high charge to the battery releases the sulphuric acid back into the electrolyte. Have you tried just replacing the electrolyte with a specific gravity of about 1.3? If the plates still have capacity to absorb more sulphuric acid it should be a cheap and easy way to keep using an old battery compared to forking out $250 for a new one.

It's desulfating, so the internal resistance drops. Therefore, voltage drops and its charging it self. When it's full it won't take amps but voltage rises and eventually it will explode, hence the voltage limiter in proper battery charger usually about 14.4v.

Check out "PulseTech" Xtreme Battery Desulfators. I have used these units for years on all of my gas engine driven welders as well as all my vehicles batteries. They stay hooked up 24/7 - 365 days a year. They constantly pulse the plates inside the battery and also charge automatically if the battery needs it. I also use them on my golf carts after being fully charged up with the Golf Cart charger, I connect to the PulseTech while I'm not using the cart. They supply "quick connects" so they are very easy to disconnect/reconnect. I have had great success using these units and they have saved me a ton of money especially on very expensive 36 Volt Trojan Golf cart Batteries. Just some FYI for what has and is working for me anyway.

you don't have to use a stick welder or even a 220v welder, i do my batteries with a 110v mig set up for flex and it works fine, you just have to be mindful of the duty cycle, 110v welders have shorter Duty cycles, also from my experience there is no set amount of time, what i've seen is it depends on the condition of your battery, if you have cells that aren't bubbling when you start then you have to keep doing it until they all are bubbling equally. because i use a 110 wirefeed welder i use jumper cables to connect battery to welder that way i can stand back and pull the trigger for 30 second bursts with a couple minutes in between for the duty cycle and keep doing it until the battery reaches above 12.5v in between burst then put it on a smart charger and let it charge to 100% then the batteries good to go.......

I am confounded by this. Have an old, late 1980's stick welder that when I try to hook it up, the clamps throw sparks like I just dead shorted the battery terminals. Hear a hissing from the battery, even with the welder off/unplugged and see the old electrode clamped to the positive terminal is glowing red... again, like a dead short. Pretty sure this is not what should be happening. I any idea what's going on? Does it need to be a newer inverter welder? Thinking about using my inverter TIG but would rather not fry that.
@owenbruce4120

@@Jerseyhighlanderare you sure your welder is putting out DC current ??...earlier welders were not rectified to DC...many older welders were AC straight off a variable transformer and MUST be attached to a rectifier first for DC output...check the voltage before use as older stuff was often 35 to 40 volts

Hi Bruce, as the battery has a 3 year warranty, would it not be better to just get a new one? I see from some other channels that they reckon you can restore a battery's voltage, but the cold cranking amps (CCA) will be greatly reduced, rendering the battery almost, or entirely, useless. The reason this happens is that the lead plates inside will get thinner and will warp, reducing efficiency or even touching, thereby shorting out one or more cells.
@DIYHomesteadProjectsDIYHP10
@DIYHomesteadProjectsDIYHP10 Жыл бұрын
That may be the case but I've always wanted to try this to see if it works. I did mention in the video that I may just return it and use the warranty to get a new one but I do have a couple months to give this a try. Since it's getting pretty cold here now this is the perfect time to give it a test.
@phonotd

About the "rendering the battery useless", id have to dissagree on that one. I tried this process in a more aggressive manner(more amperage) this past July, and the battery has been starting and running my daily driver with no problems at all. I will admit I checked voltage, and load tested the battery before and after the process, but did not check its cca. My video is there on my channel , the higher amperage allowed for the battery to be ready right after the welder process, no low charge was needed. But thank you DIY Homestead Projects for posting this video, it's videos like this one that motivated me to try this.
@wsbill14224
@wsbill14224 7 ай бұрын
Just because a battery is reconditioned does not mean the cold cranking amps are greatly diminished. That's a fallacy. Often a reconditioned battery is almost as good as new.

The welder is Great idea but must be kept on for a short period of time as the voltage climbed above the 2.4volts of each cell allowable to three volts, which if left for too long can shorten the life of the cells and destroy the battery! Once the battery is fully charged it should be left at approx 12.4 volts. and is sufficiently Charged. ongoing maintenance is necessary to extend the life of the cells in the battery and is a must, also the use of an hydrometer to measure the gravity of each cell is very important to get a idea of state of charge for each cell, doing this will prolong the life of the battery.

Everstart Batt's used to be made by Johnson Controls in the USA and were great batteries. Johnson Controls was bought out by another company and are now made in Mexico I have been advised. Other Batt companies are making batteries for Walmart Such as Decka, East Penn (same company) etc and maybe others. It's hard to tell who's battery is in the box unless you can identify the box it's in such as a ribbed box on the outside is a East Penn or Decka and a smooth sided box is susposed to be the new style former Johnson Controls battery. I guess we just never know these days unless you really sit down and do your homework, unfortunately

you will get resistance, capacitive and inductive changes..... why bother with desulfating unless you have a use for the old battery such as a neighbor needs a back up or in a dune buggy or power for a shed! as long as the v doesnt drop below 10v that damages the recharge capability. we use old batteries in the barn on a trickle charger. but good video instead of buying a new welder look for one on line .... students get motitated to buy and find out being a welder is tough business and the cheap welders wont hold up!

I don't have one of those welders but there are two types I've seen. One is AC only and the other is both AC and DC. If yours doesn't say both AC and DC on the front you must have the AC only model. If that's the case it only puts out AC voltage. What I don't know is if the AC voltage will de-sulfate a battery or not, I have never tried it. If your battery is already sulfated and no good you could always try it and see if it will work. I would recommend starting at the lowest setting to see if you can get the cells to bubble.
