Here you can see how an old dirty and resinous RC engine is made fit for the showcase again!

Why is everyone upset that he used the old bearings and polished the case. It CLEARLY says in the title "for the glass showcase" he's obviously not rebuilding it for use.

becuase they;re RETARDED,..I got an Ace-4-40..complete from my flight instructor....but it was OLD...$20. He basically just gave it to me. I just took the engine apart and flushed it... Recovered the model...Flew it a crap load of times...CRASHED it 10-20 times... FLUSH, GLUE, FILM and REPEAT...lmao I clipped the wings, extended the rudder. redid the deck ..added wheel pants. So i can torque roll with it..... That model was just a TOOL....I did touch and go with it and mastered my landings. That's why he gave it to me for $20.lmao

when restoring an old engine, soak in degreaser for a day, clean with a nylon brush. then an “aluminum brightener” which is a mild acid to get rid of dark oxidation. the wire wheel takes off and smooths the factory aluminum casting texture which isn’t good. you want the engine to have a dull bright aluminum texture. only sand and polish surfaces that came with a smooth polished finish such as engine head fins.

I used some cleaner years ago that came in a box of used RC stuff, I think it was called engine brite or something like that. It was not caustic and it made dull, dirty motors look like factory new. It even removed the baked on varnish from the head and muffler. I think would use Dremel polishing brushes before I approached a bench grinder. Fantastik spray cleaner works pretty good and really does a good job on fuel splattered Monokote. I prefer it to 409.

I overhauled many nitro engines in my R/C hobby years.I would have tried to get new bearings and gaskets and overhaul the carb as well.straighten the needle valve arm and even install a new glow plug even if I wasn't going to run it anymore. It just makes the engine look that much better.

Using purple power cleaner and an ultra sonic cleaner eliminates all that wire wheeling and the cleaner dissolves all the old fuel and shines the engine. Nice video, other methods work just as well if not better.

Exactly! Never have I needed to use wire brush for my model engine parts.. I have cheapo US-cleaner and when i use mild dishwasher soap/water/ethanol solution, I get great results without moving any of the original engines material. Ultrasonic cleaners are a must if You are really in building small engines. I have tuned and rebuilt numerous machines and by far the best cleaning i get is with ultrasonic. Specially for 25-50cc 2-strokers that I have tuned, I have used ultrasonic/ compressed air for the carburetor cleaning after using dremel or other grinding methods that leave small Al shit everywhere

Maybe fit for a showcase, but certainly not fit for an R/C plane after re-using the rusty old bearings. He didn't even clean the top of the piston to improve combustion, so it's obvious he was just building it as a display model (I hope).

Yep Yep!! I always take any used engine apart no matter the condition. I bought one last week and was so happy how it felt without the glow plug, tight at the top of the stoke and very clean! There was a ever so slight feeling that didnt feel right. One had to really feel it slowly to catch it. I believe the engine was sold for consingment. I took it apart and found: 1 The piston had a fresh arrow pointring to the front of the engine and was beat to hell from mechanical debris 2 the piston had a gouge down the side of it opposite the exhaust port. REAL BAD! All of the work done in the engine was done after reassembly and never started as all the scratches , arrows and sanding marks on the side of the piston had no residual combustion residue 3 the cylinder head was hammered as well. 4 the rod was bent and damaged on the big end 5 the cranckcase was gouged by debris between between the rod and the crackcase at the bolttom of the stroke. 6 Best of all and I have never seen this...the wrist pin was broken inside the rod small end. This is why you should always teardown a used engine. It like a box of chocolates....

STill, the old bearings are like scratchineg fingernails on a chalkboard. If it is only for display, why bother did-assembling and cleaning at all? The wire wheel is also quite brutal when 'restoring' anything. It wears down the sharpness of the casting.

Ok people, This is for the common guy that WANTS to use that engine. A bad front bearing will cause lower cylinder compression loss. This makes the engine IMPOSSIBLE to tune. Actually, if you are going through this much of an effort to fix an engine, you REPLACE those bearings. Someday, someone will want to actually USE that engine. Placing something in a glass case is about as useless as it gets. Those engines were ment to use. Would you restore an old car just to SIT behind a glass wall? Eventually that vehicle WILL be run again. As a general rule, restoring something means making it back to New or usable condition.

I hope this was for show and not meant to restore the engine for use. Old bearings? Really, they were not even cleaned up. Was the carb taken apart? Old gaskets and rings? Oh, I see now, the description says "for the showcase again". Now I understand. Please, people, don't do this if you really want to use the engine again in flight. Well, I guess you can, just don't let the plane get too far away and be ready for an unexpected dead stick landing. (That is if you can get it started)

Your methods are caveman! How bout using an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner, with ultrasonic cleaning solution, or just plain dish soap n water. Or a crock pot, with antifreeze coolant, cook it for 2hrs, the engine will loosen up, brush it using a toothbrush. That wire brush takes some metal off the casting.

When I go to remove bearings I put the parts in a toaster oven at 250° for 10 minutes. You can tap them on a block of wood and they will fall out. When I go to put them back in I put the engine parts in the toaster oven again and have the bearings in the freezer, then they will push in with your thumb. I would never wire wheel anything! You can take Etheline glycol and put it in a crockpot and bake your engine clean. Lame music and terrible method.
