I think it’s best to start with a least aggressive sanding because some times you don’t even need to go as low as 800. If your initial step doesn’t do it then back down a step and so on. Sanding is so time consuming! This would be great for fleet work.

On a lot of headlights I simply use 3000 grit and then go straight to a one step polish, 3000 grit and then M205 on a rotary via 3 inch foam cutting pads, then protect with whatever you want. Believe it or not that combo works very well on a lot of headlights!

Thanks for such a great common sense video. I used a 3D kit and did the same thing you did at first. I got so frustrated I gave up and said I'll do it later. Since then I bought a chemical guys headlight kit for the headlights that are not too bad.

Why not seal it with the meguires headlight Clear coat? Won’t it protect the plastic from getting yellow ? Without it the plastic it’s self will get yellowed and won’t be able to get restored again?
@DetailGroove

Yes you can. I just didn't to keep the video shorter. We always ceramic coat the headlights once we're done
@elvatotoro
@elvatotoro 2 жыл бұрын
@@DetailGroove does the ceramic coat keep the headlights from getting yellow ? I like the Clear coat because I think it fills in the smaller scratches. But I been wanting to switch over to a ceramic coating if it still keeps the plastic safe from the sun. Clear coat spray does get hard when it’s windy and stuff like that.
@batvon39
@batvon39 2 жыл бұрын
@@elvatotoro clear coat would fill in scratches so you wouldn't have to refine as much (I know some people stop as early as 1200 grit and just spray), but you'd have to mask off more of the car to prevent overspray and such. I think that's a good solution for a personal vehicle but for a mobile detailer, it's probably easier to sand/polish and coat, especially if you're working on the rest of the car. But really comes down to preference, there's a few methods

Try starting out with a rotory and liquid aluminum polish and skip the sanding. Then go to your compound step if needed. I rarely sand anymore. Just keep the plastic cool while doing both steps. Then clean and coat

9:00 can you go into a deeper explanation into this? Or do a separate video an explain how to avoid that or what would be the better approach. 🙏🏻. Just found out your channel and started watching videos from like 4 years ago.

So he explained. Do not use a lot of heat… meaning if you use a Rotary polisher, they can get super hot if u keep them in one spot. Best way to approach the headlights would be too do the steps he’s doing! Don’t use heavy sand paper. (800grit) maybe start with 1000 grit or like how he is using 3000 grit sandpaper for this job, (wet sanding is what he’s doing) Andthan he uses the compound to do (step 1 polish) to fix the 3000grit scratches Andthan he’s using an actual polish (step 2 polish) to restore the final scuffs. Making a clean clean look!
