Isn't it amazing what a difference a little clean up and drop of paint can do for a loco that looked as if it had seen better days. Well done all round, Mike and Douglas. Take care...

Mike more power to you elbow that was brilliant, shows what you can do with a little bit of imagination and a few paints. The blue you put on as a base coat I think going back to the 60's it was "Duck egg blue" I remember using it on a De-Haviland Mosqiuto. Great video, Frank

Hi I'm coming back to this video for a second time after being invested into the miniture painting hobby, and wanted to ask wouldn't it be better when painting kits or repainting models to use plastic spray primer so the paint apply's smoother and gives a nicer smoother finish using less coats, I understand it's not possible when mechanical parts are at stake but simple stuff like wagons and kits would probably benefit greatly from spray priming.

If you used a bit of masking tape then the brass would have come out much better. I also think the number plate should have been brassed. I don't think there's much more that can be done without spending alot of money. I wanted to do a restoration by adding a driver, firebox handles, proper handbags with standoffs, lamp irons etc but the cost is stupid for a cheap loco. Perhaps you could sell a budget 0-4-0 detailing kit.

Nice job. Putting some painter's tape along the edges of the hand rails would help keep them nice and uniform for painting - there's a couple of spots where the thickness of the bronze changes along the rail as a result of being painted free hand. Also, you can pick up replacement rails and support pins fairly cheaply. Sand the moulded rails flush, drill a couple of holes and then it's just a case of glueing them in place. Do you plan to add any names / logos/ running numbers etc.? I'm sure somewhere like hobby craft would sell stencils for those sorts of things.

Great job as always as ive told you before somehow i manged to buy a little blue engine and 3 four wheeled carriges for £15 i was pleased with that. Its pretty old i believe, but i got it working fine with a bit of a clean and a touch of 3-1 oil.I saw somewhere on here a video that taught me to put a drop of oil in a bottle top, bend a paper clip straight and just dip and apply using the clip.Have you got anymore of those controller boxes yet? Thanks regards,Michael.

Antifreeze makes good paint stripper (also sold as airbrush cleaner) and won't effect the plastic. I do hate shiny wheels. I use blackening salts whicg doesn't effect their conductivity.

Not a bad job there, although you lost me at the brass handrails but that's just me... Also I know the channel is about keeping a budget but if you don't mind forking out for a lining sheet from fox transfers it makes all the difference. You can get quite a few small locos done with them, really worth the effort.

Truthfully, so much more could be made of this loco, with the use of an air gun to pain with, some masking tape and some proper tipped paint brushes! The finish you have achieved is a vast improvement on the way it began but it’s a mottled appearance and this is purely because it is brushed, rather than the evenness of an air gun. Air guns are cheap and incredibly easy to use.... so I don’t know why you shy away from them. The hand rails, while good, are very uneven and therefore look nothing like a hand rail should do.... mask off the area around the hand rails and then paint it using a pointed tip brush, not a flat edge.... this should then be left to dry before removing the masking tape.... and voila.... hand rails with dead straight, well defined edges that look realistic.

Thanks fir the suggestions but I think you are missing the point a bit. I wasn't trying to make a perfect model I was trying to show how to improve a model with the minimum of skills and materials. An airbrush at £50 + is not my idea of cheap. Plus it needs practice to use and needs cleaning every time you use it. It's not always about how perfect something is or how much money you can throw at it.

I like your videos loads but I simply don’t believe this is the way forward as railways should be a fine art of perfection the same with art really, yes it’s no way to get anyone into the hobby but it gives them something to aim for, not many channels document there first day of layouts it’s usually there 2 or 3rd layout they document all the way from track laying but I don’t see the point in spending £5 - £10 here and there on logos that arnt realisitic when you could have got your self a dcc sound loco (if you ran dcc) for the price of 10-15 of your 040 “pocket rockets
