In this video, I explain how to return a forehand pendulum serve aimed at your backhand.
The footage is taken from a real coaching session with a player called Simon. Simon had a very good season in his local league, but he really wants to improve his return of serves. And the serve he struggles with most is the forehand pendulum serve.
In the session I show Simon how to read the spin, how to return the serve in a basic way and how to return the serve in a more advanced way.
This video is essential viewing to any player who also struggles returning a pendulum serve.

excellent...so many of us fall victim to this serve. The tip on noticing how much of the bat is open or closed is really good, especially if you don't quite see the contact, or (illegally) some of the bat is hidden by the other arms motion at contact time. Both common at the club level.

its allowed to hide the racket, but not the ball.

Nice video, I liked the amount of rubber you see to determine the serve. I myself, look into the racket angle at the contact point and link it with the trajectory of the ball to see if it is a side/back or side/top spin. Thanks.

You should also show how to return those Timo Boll style sinister pendulum serves , the ball just stops at the middle of and keeps spinning on the table

good lesson. how can simon get to that level of shot without being able to read any type of spin? it just shows how much people can learn in a few minutes. i had a similar lesson recently and it has made me realise how important it is to be able to counter the spin of the opponents serve, and not just try and cope with it.

It's this serve variation which is so easy to hide. A pendulum serve is harder for me to read than any other serve while I haven't struggled against most others for years

Not sure how I missed this one. But great video. I'm playing in tournaments once a month and reading spin is so important. I'm getting better at it but still have a long way to go. Simon did very well.

Thanks for the explanations but when I meet experienced players I can hardly see what spin is on the ball because they know how to do it with subtle movements.

Yes, it can be very tough. All you can do is try to watch the server's contact with the ball as closely as possible. Over time it does get gradually easier. But for most players it is usually the most challenging aspect of table tennis.

The type of spin you are putting on can actually be spotted by the height of your elbow. Also it’s better to move the foot that’s closer to the ball!
