The old POTS wire in your walls of any use? If it's a straight run from the basement to your room, you can use it as a wired 100-mbps ethernet line!
No more dropped teleconferencing calls!
Please experiment responsibly.
A video of the testing results: • You'll Never Know Unti...
*BTW: if 100 mpbs full-duplex results in terrible transmission speeds, try 100 mbps half-duplex before downgrading to 10 mpbs (it might solve your problem).

Seriously considering doing this to my ~25 year old house. I sure as hell hope that the cable is in conduit and not stapled anywhere!

Thanks for this tutorial. I was confused by the "green and orange" wires then I realized you were wiring jacks using the 568A standard vs the 568B standard. 568B would be "blue and orange" wires. Again, thank you for your video. I am in an older house where there are a few phone jacks but they are run in daisy chain so I am hoping to find a home run from one room to another that fits my needs.

If the cables are in conduit already you can use that old cable to draw through a new Cat5/6/E cable into the conduit, so that you get the best speed. Strip all 6 wires on the old cable, and the same for the new, and twist them together, then preferably solder as well. Then lubricate the new cable with something, like dishwashing liquid, or soap, or silicone oil, so that the pulling force is not excessive. Tie a heavy fishing line on the joint as well, so that you now have a draw string for future use, like a second cable if you want 2 outlets and no switch, or another outlet in another room, or you want to pull fibre as well later. If the cable loops through the house, you will have to pull to each outlet in sequence, and make sure to leave a loop in the box afterwards, though the pull through will need to have the balance of the length plus a bit spare per socket, so reduce stress on the wires.

Nice :) This house is too old to have conduit technology :( My plan B was to repurpose the central vac tubes. Vacuum a small rag attached to a draw-string and then repurpose the tubes as a conduit. I forgot to mention that in the video.

You can just use those two pairs for 1 2 3 and 6 on your rj45. It'll work as cat 3 ethernet with 10mb/s.

If you have an analog copper telephone line, you can connect it to your router through a DSL modem

hi May I know if cat 3 steel wire can be done the same or does it have to be cat 3 copper wire. Thanks in advance.

As long as it's twisted pair it'll likely work. Just remember with cat3 that you can only use 4 out of 6 wires, and you'll have to manually set your routers tx/Rx speed to 100 mbps. There is the scientific argument that you shouldn't mix metals (as they will corrode each other over time), but hey, this is a free experiment, and if it all works out ... bonus!

My house was built in early 50s. Can a phone line that old be converted to cat 5/6?

The red/green/black/yellow wire lines were prohably used and aren't twisted pair. 10 mbps is possible in shorter runs. You might be better off with an ap mesh network kit instead. But as I've mentioned before, free is free, so if you have a saturday afternoon to experiment, why not try the free option first. Faster transmission speeds are only essential for file transfers, if thats the thing you do. Mindless web surfing can survive 10 mbps 😀

I’m confused how you say you are using 6 wires but then you only connect the orange and green pairs..

You only need to use four out of the six wires.

Hopefully it's twisted pair. If not, you might have to downgrade to 10 Mbps. Try 100 Mbps half-duplex first before you downgrade to 10

Hi Mark, By no means am I trying to mislead anyone. The following video is me testing out your hypothesis: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mc6Veali0p_Om2g.html I never double-checked the results until this evening, so I suppose thank you for giving me the initiative :P Best Regards,

You cannot use c3 and get c5 results. Non twisted pair non certified wire won't do the job. Just cuz you have 2 copper pair which transmit and receive doesn't give you the speed and bandwidth. Misleading people my friend.

Hi Mark, I've heard naysayers before on the internet. This is the second house that I've successfully accomplished this. There is definite truth that it may not work, but you never know until you try. That's all I'm trying to promote. And yes, if it's a connection midway though the network, it will unlikely work due to reflections in the line. Anyway, I'm happy with the 100 Mbps cap since my internet is only 25 Mbps. Other than file transfer, it is more than adequate for general media consumption. I would agree to rewire the entire house if it was possible, but thats usually more than a simple 1 hour experiment. Again, you never know until you try :) Best regards,
