The most profound cases of healing I see are in people who refuse to give up. Even if they’ve found some things that improve their condition, they continue searching for new ways to feel better and better. This is how we break down walls in medicine. It’s how people who are told they’ll never walk again end up biking to work every day. I’m honored to have one of those incredible people on today’s podcast to talk about her journey as a patient with secondary progressive multiple sclerosis. Dr. Terry Wahls never stopped searching for answers and has changed the prognosis of MS and autoimmune diseases for herself and so many others in the process. Throughout this episode, we dive into Dr. Wahls latest tweaks and updates to the healing protocol that’s been so successful for her and countless others.
Dr. Terry Wahls is a clinical professor of medicine at the University of Iowa. Her secondary progressive multiple sclerosis confined her to a tilt-recline wheelchair for four years, but she restored her health using a diet and lifestyle program she designed specifically for mitochondrial health and now pedals her bike to work each day. She is the author of The Wahls Protocol: How I Beat Progressive MS Using Paleo Principles and Functional Medicine, The Wahls Protocol: A Radical New Way to Treat All Chronic Autoimmune Conditions Using Paleo Principles, and the cookbook, The Wahls Protocol Cooking for Life: The Revolutionary Modern Paleo Plan to Treat All Chronic Autoimmune Conditions.

Thank you Mark for another visit with Terry Wahls. She continues to be inspiring and critically despite so much success, continues to do the science to better understand the biology and and the protocol. Understanding what works and what doesn't for each individual is going to evolve and hopefully one day the medical system (especially insurance and the government) will wake up and see that diet and lifestyle, agriculture and the environment are key to a healthy population and in the long run can lower the cost of health care.

That was the first ever remission I’ve tasted in my psor life, kept it for 3 years til My skin can’t keep it so tried biologics. I’m on biologics now for more than 3 years. I want to get rid of biologics soon and your videos about auto immune diseases give me so much understanding and hope about my body and my system. Thank you so much.

In the case of Myasthenia Gravis (MG) ... would have liked to have heard how do Acetylcholine antibodies form (since they are responsible for the destruction of the Acetylcholine protein receptors on the muscle cell) and what specifically is the mechanism by which the diet/gut-makeup can eliminate those antibodies? Chris Masterjohn suggests healthy communities eat from at least one of these groups.. 1) Eggs/Organ Meats 2) Dairy Products 3) Fish/Shellfish 4) Insects/Frogs So according to the Wahl protocol, Eggs and Dairy are out (along with Gluten/Wheat, Sugar), but are there any Fish/Insects that are off the table?

I have begun to put my wife, who has actually been diagnosed with both MS and NMO, on Lions Maine powder daily as it is supposed to help repair myelin in the brain and help re-myelinate nerves. Starting her out on 3.5 grams in protein shake daily. Will eventually add it Turkey Tail and Reichi mushroom powder. I have also starting making weekly meal plans for her health/gut/weight management and as low lectins as possible. Am trying to get her to do basic stretching and yoga. Is there anything else that can be done? I have degree in biochemistry so I try and look at her diet and meds on a biochemical/functional as possible but I’m not a doctor.

I would focus on the B vitamins. Make sure she is getting enough of them in her diet. As for supplements, B12 and B1 may help a massive amount. If she has problems taking up B12 or B1 then she may need a B12 injection or higher amounts. Try the Thiamax version of B1 as it seems to be taken up much more easily by a body that struggles to take up B1. Vitamin D seems to be protective from getting MS but I don't know how useful it is for someone that already has the condition. You can try getting her up to healthy levels if she is low. Vitamin K2 *may* help. All these vitamins are safe, especially the B vitamins even at fairly high doses but with long term treatment of B1 and B12 she may feel better taking a B complex.

A healthy diet is extremely important, though it's no panacea when it comes to MS in particular, at best it will slow down progression and lead to improvement. MSers have a major vulnerability in their bodies and that creates a pathway for pathogens, physical and spiritual. Personally I find LDN as the most helpful medication for treatment. While junk food will slowly worsen anyone's health, it doesn't cause MS. When I was diagnosed 15 years ago, I heard many people assuming that after hearing Montel Williams speak publicly on the topic.

She went from wheelchair and pain to being able to exercise and feel good. "At best" is still pretty good considering we are talking about a diet change resulting in such improvements for conditions that are viewed as chronic, worsening death sentances.

@@la7418 no I really want to know what foods are good to eat, what vitamins, I want to try more of a natural way of treating this than some of the meds they offer, I only see negative things about some of the meds it appears it would add more issues to an already complicated disease. I feel the meds just mask the situation I want something that will help it, possibly cause it to go in remission, or reverse what can be reversed. I know you probably think that sounds not safe but I feel natural as possible is the safest.

What is especially troubling to me is the way Dr Wahl refers to her protocol. In medicine someone (thinks they) figures something out. Then others attempt to replicate those results in a systematic way. Once an observation has been validated it becomes information that can be used by all physicians. When a doctor personalizes that information by calling it a protocol with their name in it before it is rigorously valudated I get very suspicious.
@bastian6173

@@slovokia spot on. Plus, there is really nothing special about her protocol. It really is just a modified paleo diet with a lot of meat and even more veggies.
