In this video I will show you how you can disassemble a BLDC Motor and in which manner you have to rewind its copper wires (motor phases) in order to lower the kV rating of the Motor. This way the motor features a lower maximum RPM and thus can be easier utilized as a generator. Along the way you will also learn a bit about the delta and star wiring of such a motor and their advantages.

Hi, Just spotted a slight mistake that might be relevant in future videos. 26 wires with a diameter of 0.2mm do not equate to a 5.2mm diameter wire. You need to multiply the cross section area, not the diameter. In this case, it would be the equivalent of a 1.02mm diameter wire.

@Robert Slackware Here is an opportunity to triple down on stupid... Go for it... By the way, what your ignorance is talking about is NOT silver, it is in fact, MOSTLY copper, probably coated in silver to get the lower resistance of silver used via skin effects, but the hardness of copper as silver is TOO ductile a material to be used for much of anything.
@w8stral
@w8stral 4 жыл бұрын
@Robert Slackware Ah, you did triple down, excellent. That "silver" wire, I guarantee you is less than 50% silver if sold for electrical purposes. Silver is too soft and if used for windings, as you are talking about MUST have an insulating coating on it anyways. Pure silver would not help you any compared to partial. Probably less than 30% silver. And yes, it is Hella expensive.

@@ChristopherJones16 Why silver plated wiring? Same reason people gold plate wiring, corrosion mostly. Also in Aerospace you silver plate your wiring and other surfaces as it effectively stops dendrite growth which causes short circuits AND gives skin effect dampening from EMP for space based sattelites though gold is used usually.

Love the way your native language has ways of putting complete ideas, even processes into one word. @9:50 I see there's a word that you say on the Patreon page means the 6 pulse bridge rectifier, but similarly Schadenfreude, or even better, Backpfeifengesicht and Verschlimmbessern Interesting project, I used to make tiny motors for RC planes by rewinding the motors from old computer CD drives. Apart from the tedium of actually winding them, the different results that were obtained by the number of turns on the windings, diameter of wire etc was quite interesting.

I rewound quite a few motors for my quadcopters. When removing stator you need to heat it, cooling motor base is fine, but sometimes there is adhesive which will give up with higher temperatures. Also threading is common, so you always need to twist it and not just pull. Avoid stator damage by wrapping it in some cloth, leather or just paper. You want to avoid any sharp edges on stator and layer separation. For anyone trying it, consider double lacquered wire, since its more resistant to damage when hand winding. If you need winding scheme for different slots and pole counts calculator on www.bavaria-direct.co.za/scheme/calculator/ can be really helpful. Also use some heat shrink on wires exiting motor. With vibrations motor base can "bite" through enamel and short your phase to metal base. That starts to be problem when you attach your motor to grounded metal frame or something. Simple trick for removing enamel from wire is to use pill of aspirin and melt it with wire. It smells, but its fast and I prefer it over sandpaper.

Hi, as you are always asking for ideas, Igot one that would be awesome. As a hobby I do some FPV Drone flying and for that purpose people are typically using simple sony hs1177 cameras that provide a simple analog PAL (or NTSC) signal. This signal now is transmitted analog on the 5.8GHz band (at 25mW). The downside here is, that with the analog signal a lot of noise is received too. For that purpose a very nice project would be to find a way of converting the analog signal to digital with error-correction and maybe decode it back on the receiver. The main problem here is that the latency has to be as low as possible. For that purpose I'd also suggest to not use of-the-shelf Video ADCs but rather encode the signal line-wise or bundle a few lines at a time. Else collecting a full frame will always introduce quite a bit of latency by itself. And even if you think the above is a little too complicated to accomplish I am sure there would be very nice projects using the cheap fpv-equipment parts available.

You can get automobile or truck alternator rectifiers which are 3PH and Schottky very low drop,and current ratings from 40 to 250+ amps. Brushless motors can come in very large sizes, replace the bearings with Hybrid Ceramic to prevent current loss through the armature and eroding the bearings.

Nice! There's plenty of explanations of Faraday's law and so on for motor and generators on the Internet, but practical number of turns/output voltage for real BLDCs is more sparse. This video has given me much more practical information for my pedal generator for a hybrid bike project. I don't want any gears or chains, the whole point is simpler mechanics. Even after rewinding a BLDC I know I will probably still need some step up gearing though.

You said you count the number of turns "per pole". These are not poles but slots. The number of poles, for such a motor, is determined by the number of N/S magnets on the rotor. The number of poles is always an even number (N and S). On the winded part, the name is slots, even if there are protuding parts. And the number of slots can be an odd number. A 8 poles, 9 slots motor for instance has a very smooth torque curve...

I think you could have split the original winding into parts, as they are all made from individually enameled wire. Like 2 parts of 13 litz wires and connect them in series. Of course after dividing the wires of one side into two bundles on the second side you have to test each of the 26 litz wires from the strand individually, to which part-winding it belongs. But this seems doable.

You didn't have to rewind, just put the 26 winfingx in series in stead of parallel... Or 13 pairs in series... Another good one is to separate the 3 phases rectify them via voltage doubler on to capacitor pairs and put the 3 in series...

When I saw this video, I had a question: if I want to make a wind generator, should I connect a modified engine (like the one on the video, but bigger) to the generator shaft? Or should I create a winding around the circumference of the generator and use the motor shaft as the source of rotation for neodymium magnets? I was also thinking about connecting several generators to the circumference of the generator ... it would gain power, but it would be difficult for the wind to move the whole blade system.

If this was used as a regular bldc motor would it have a higher torque? This would very cool and efficient way to not use a gearbox

Hi GreatScott! Can you make a video where to explain the benefits of the brushless motor as a generator? I want to know the voltage and its power. Can this be used as a battery charger for example?( Off course with all the equipment needed)

I have been unsubscribe from your channel! I never believe when people say that and have never happen to me before. I watch all your videos, so is not because I have being watching you. If you notice a lot of subscription maybe the same happen to others. I now subscribed again! :)

Hi.... I would like to know more about designing motors and AC generators??...In particular, the relationship between wire size, flux calculation, terminal voltage, current per phase/ per coil and power output....Any recommended books or materials/websites....?...

Greatscott im working on an experiment that is currently on hold, but i would like to see if you can continue whete i left off. I would like to turn a stand fan into a generator by rewiring. Or a washing machine motor. I know if anyone cando it you can. Keep me updated.

Or instead of rewinding the motor, you could use your motor controller. FOC allows negative torque (current) which also enables full bus voltage generation (works similar to a buck converter, using the motor coils as inductor). This would need external power (or at least a buffer, to store startup power) tho
