This video gives a quick tutorial on how to rib stitch aircraft poly-fiber fabric. Lately I've been rib stitching some controls for my Bellanca Cruisair. Nothin' like a good ol' fabric covered airplane. Keep the history alive, and let me know if you have any questions. Important Note: There is one thing that is NOT shown in this video that you are supposed to do. Let's say you are going to do 2" stitching. Well, the first stitch should be half of what you choose. So the very first stitch, in this case, should be made 1" in. After that, you can continue 2" until the end of the rib. All of this information can be found in the Poly-Fiber Manual.

I’m glad you produced this on rib stitching- brings back memories. Look at the Monocoupe 110 Special in the EAA museum we restored years ago- the entire wing, top of the fuselage, and the entire empennage was stitched at 1” increments. Took awhile! Love the 14-13; keep us posted!

In the winter of 1964 my father and I recovered our Piper PA12 with ceconite. Sad had an FAA Manual that we followed to do the rib stitching. We had the wings in a jig. He would push the needle thru and I would push it back. I believe that he ran the string along the welp and put the needle through again. I don't remember that we buried each knot. However he may have. I was 16 and I was only working one side of the wing.

You have a nice set of video’s on the Bellanca restoration. I’ve lost a game of “not it” for repairing wings of a Bellanca 14-19-3, the last serial number “Cardboard Connie”. I need to get the fabric off the wings before I can start repaying some soft spots. The only other IA on the field had too many surgeries last fall (he is 83 years old) and is done. I’ve inherited the task of getting it flyable, most of the maintenance I’ve done is on Piper’s and canned spam (Cessna’s). Stripping a Tripacer is easier than this task. Can you give me any pointers on getting the old fabric off the wings? Russ

Wow Russ. That's really interesting. Thanks for checking out my videos and welcome aboard/ Removing fabric from wood can be a tedious, painful process. I don't know the BEST way to do it, or maybe I do. I don't have a ton of experience. All I know is how I personally dealt with removing fabric from wood. I didn't do the wings, but I did do a set of flaps. I just used a combination of MEK (or Acetone) and a dull razor (to not hurt the wood fibers). One thing that helps for spots that aren't coming up easily is placing a towel on top, soaking it with MEK, and then placing some plastic on top of it (so it doesn't evaporate as fast) and letting it sit for about 5-10 minutes and work it's way into the glue. I've done that a lot with the wings. I had to remove a ton of clue using a lot of MEK and a lot of rags. Just make sure you are in a well ventilated area and I recommend getting a proper mask for MEK. Research it. It is really bad stuff, but it works. The last thing you want to use is water because that can ruin the wood so never use water. And focus on one area at a time. It took us well over a hundred hours to get the wings ready to re-cover. Send me an email at theskyelounge@gmail.com if you ever have any questions. I'm happy to help.

Brady, have you learned yet if the interior fabric for the Crusair can be replaced without removing the exterior fabric?
