What a great video. I'm new to riding at 71 years old. I rode as a child on my grandparents' farm. We used the if-you-stay-on-you're-riding method, so I had no training until I met my husband, who had horses and got me back into the horse world. I've had several different trainers and have learned a lot over the past couple of years, but haven't been able to completely shake the fear I had developed over the years. Being around horses a lot has helped. My horse is a Belgian/Quarter cross, 1500 lbs and stands at 16.2. I am small, and stand at 5'4:. This horse and I "chose" each other from the moment we met. He cuts me a lot of slack he has not afforded others. He is well-intentioned and seems to know that I am as well. He's a rescue, and came from a home where the rider was heavy handed. He was ridden only on the hunt, and turned out with his mule friend between hunts. When the owner died, he was surrendered to a kill pen. I've had some trauma in my life too. Fast forward to two years after bringing this guy home, and we've both learned a lot, but I am still dealing with fear, and that means clenching in the saddle when I feel unbalanced or that I'm not completely in control. Under the circumstances, Shiloh does really well. He's gotten a lot softer, and much more responsive. I'm excited to see more of your videos, and to work on this partnership with my boy.

Diane.. how inspirational you are! Sometimes I wonder if I started riding too late (45yo) so it was great reading your comment! I had a lesson today after some time off and I was so nervous and tense, something I have struggled with, which makes me lose my balance and seat (and stirrups) very easily (not to mention makes for exhausting rides and a sore back). The homework I was given was to ride bareback, starting at the walk until I was completely comfortable then move up from there. She said for many riders in Europe they must “graduate” to riding in a saddle bc riding bareback forces you to find your balance and confidence so much quicker. She also said learning the two-point would help as well, something I’ve never learned. Anyway that’s why I ended up watching this video.. to get more tips for riding bareback. I plan to start with someone lunging as I ride so I only have to worry about my seat... or my horse :). Good luck to you and thanks again for the inspiration!!!!

I have been riding since I was eleven, raised with Tennessee walkers, quarter horses, and and my beautiful thoroughbreds. I am 30 years old nearing 31 and I still love your videos. You truly have a heart for them and you can see the closeness with smoke as I had with my peaches but you should have it with every horses not just the one. Most people just try to bound with one horse as their own which is good but you should attempt to partner in with every horse you ride. Its such a partnership and the animals can sense that when you WANT to be in tune with their bodies, when you WANT to be in tune with their minds, when you WANT to be one with them. I just love you and adore your work so much. I look forward to much more from you! I use you for my own kids and will continue to watch you myself and recommend you for all the people around Georgia in the future. Thank you! Brandy Worley Blue Ridge, Ga

Excellent video! I’ve just recently started getting back to riding bareback and bitless; I feel like I did when I was a kid again! It’s amazing how much more vulnerable you feel as an adult doing it though, I guess you’re just more aware of consequences as an adult. But it’s been fantastic to really feel my horse again and I didn’t realize just how much I was depending on my saddle. Hopefully I can inspire many others to try this same technique to reconnect with their horses

Thank you for being the only person that I could find on KZfaq who can do a sitting trot bareback, (even with the pad!, lol). All the others were stiffening up, putting their heels down and bouncing straight up and down, not 'forward and back' with the pelvis. I wanted something to use as an example in a post on FB and you are the only rider I could find with a long, relaxed leg at the trot. Brilliant! :)

@@moniquebaby36 if you ride incorrectly, start a horse too young and too quickly without allowing the horse to build muscle, with an ill fitting saddle, or too often/too long then it can. You have to be compassionate and understand that, just like with humans, it takes time to become comfortable with weight. Body builders aren't made in a week

I really like what Caroline has to say about working with your horse and riding bareback. She gives some great tips here ... proper position to be sitting on your horse, balance, using your core and connecting with your horse energetically. I grew up riding bareback and to this day it is my favorite way to ride. I also like the fact she recommends starting at the walk then work your way into the faster gaits then after you have the walk down very well then transition up to a trot and so forth. I have quite few of Carolines DVD's and find them well worth the money. I wish you were coming to Ohio this year.

This is great information, my only problem is for me to not stay tense, I really struggle with that. Even in the saddle my legs and arms just stiffen up, and my trainer tells me to to loosen up and I try, but still... i feel like I just can't. I do think that the leaning back into the seat will help more though, I am excited to try this out more! My goal is to jump bareback. Thanks so much for this video! ;)

I think you just need to ride more. I was like you when I started riding with my first horse. Eventually I gave up on lessons and just took my horse out on the trail. I rode on the buckle (no rein contact, except when I needed to turn or stop) and just relaxed and enjoyed the surroundings. I was surprised when my horse trotted off with me in balance, one day. It still took me a while to get the independent seat I wanted. Bareback riding and riding without stirrups helped, but the key to success was riding many hours at a time. Over varied terrain.

what can really help is when your trainer lunges your horse and you can only focus on your seat. And what I would do then is to just go completely "pudding" while your trainer is controlling your horse and you don't have to worry about steering..^^

Hi Dave and Welcome! Great to hear and please keep me posted. Should you want to learn more, I offer a wide array of learning opportunities here at my FL facility and on my online training academy for people and horses. Here is a little more about my approach. We believe in a holistic approach to horsemanship, providing expert knowledge and instruction for the whole horse and rider. Our approach is multi-dimensional and includes the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual aspects of both the person and horse’s well-being. We specialize in both foundation training and problem-solving and have the answers you are searching for. The key in horsemanship and having the partner you want with your horse is in foundation training. If your horse has either had 1) trauma or 2) hasn’t had a correct and solid foundation (start), they will either be too scared to learn or missing key building blocks to their development. Horses need years of development and learning to be at the level you see in many of the professional clinician and trainer’s horses - including what you see in my videos. There are no quick fixes, tricks or gimmicks and like any solid education, it takes a curriculum or program to follow so you are building a correctly foundation. We have 8 training modules that we follow in our curriculum that specialize in self-awareness, the spiritual connection, relationship, discipline, confidence, biomechanics and balanced riding. Click here for details on our training pyramid www.riderhorsemanship.com/rh-training-program. Should you be interested in learning online, we offer a very large and comprehensive online training academy for people and horses. Click here for details about our online academy training courses www.taoacademy-horse-training-courses.com/. Should you want to learn the step-by-step curriculum, please click here www.taoacademy-horse-training-courses.com/taomethodcourse. Hello Caroline, thank you sssooooo mucccchhhhhh, at last someone who teaches from the ground first, and especially what to do with your own body, I have had many riding lessons and have not had anything explained to me to help understand rider and horses movement, I have suffered servere back pain because not one trainer taught me what to do with my body. Started riding approx 2 and a half years ago. Also nothing to help me be safe. I had to search for this info myself. All of which I have found through you tube videos. I have now gone back to basics, right back to the beginning and am not gonna ride again until I have educated myself for my well being and the horses well being. Just what I've been looking for. Keep up this ssssooooo important work. Margaret

Hi! This is the first video that I’ve watched and I’m already obsessed. I do have a few questions. I should probably let you know that I currently ride at a rescue. We have about 30 lesson horses that are available to almost everyone. Most of these lesson horses are “mutts” and therefore are just have a few crazy gaits😂. I can walk trot and canter in both western, English jumping and dressage saddles. I am not super comfortable at the trot bareback yet. I find myself tensing up and I am aware of the tenseness. I try my best to relax but find that I can’t quite relax to what I am supposed to be. Being tense at the trot has held me back from cantering bareback as well. I have a variety of horses to choose from to ride bareback, I just don’t know which to choose and how to relax completely. I am just wondering which horse I should choise( I can give more specifics if desired) and I want to know how to relax so much that I am centered. I believe that I tense up because I slip to the sides. My trainer and I are working on that in saddle too. The horse that I ride the most is extremely rollypolly and we think that could be part of it. I am really just looking for as much advice as I can get currently. Thank you in advance.

I start horses bareback (hopefully will be uploading the videos of my first few bareback rides with my newest mare, an unbroken 15 year old ex broodmare) so it's interesting to see someone explain in words how to sit bareback, since it tends to be difficult to describe

Good video at least your info doesn’t sound like a foreign language. I got to see it on the ground as you rode and then in the saddles thank you for not babbling like many videos made do and being direct in your words and informationsz After 22 years of walking away from riding lessons I’m coming back to bareback to get my balance at least I hope to. No one ever explains the balance point like you do. I think that will help. It will be my third trail ride riding bareback and I will be conscious of all thisz I have had major attitude about lessons and trainers for years because I couldn’t understand what I should be feeling beneath me what needs to be going on with the horse or me. Thanks

I have some problems when I ride bareback because her back is just so short and I'm forced to lean forward because of the way she is shaped. It doesn't help that she is very bumpy as it is, do you have any advice for me as to keeping my balance? I can't really help how I lean forward and i have noticed it throws my balance off. I just don't know how to fix it.

Hello Zowie and Welcome! I discuss in this video how important it is to develop your horse's balance before you learn how to balance on your horse. Even I can't ride an unbalanced horse without bouncing and feeling like my body has become a pogo stick! I have other free training videos that offer guidance on how to develop your horse's self-carriage, balance and collected movement. They will not provide the many building blocks, layers, like my online course does. Should you want to learn how to correctly train your horse for collected and balanced movement, please check out my online course riderhorsemanship.com/index.php/tao-horsemanship-online-academy/,

I have another very nevous horse that has been away for lots of training here in the UK, he's now perfect on the ground but very nervous when ridden, tenses when mounted & very fond of bucking!, do you have any videos covering this? Thank you.
@TaoofHorsemanship

Hi Michelle and Welcome! Thank you:) Gaining the horse's mind (leadership=clarity) and heart (trust=partnership) gives you control of their feet and body. While technique is necessary when training horses, it's over-rated. For example, 3 people can apply the same technique to your horse and he/she will respond or react differently (most likely) to each person. Reason being is each person has their own approach, their own style and presence. While my training DVD's outline specific techniques and exercises for you and your horse, teaching you about how you mentally, emotionally and physically show up/approach your horse is the key to mastering horsemanship. If you are interested in learning more please check out my website riderhorsemanship.com/. We are offering a fabulous sale on DVD's and the sale will be ending in a week! Warmly, Caroline

Thank you for using a bareback pad in place of riding bareback. That provides some protection for the horse's back.
@TaoofHorsemanship
@TaoofHorsemanship 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Sonseere! The bareback pad gives the rider and horse some cushion and the horse still feels your sit bones. If the horse is highly sensitive to riding without a saddle and the rider wants to ride with a bareback pad I recommend placing a saddle pad or blanket under the bareback pad to give additional cushion. I've ridden bareback and with a bareback pad most of my life and on hundreds of horses. I've never experienced a sore back by riding bareback however some horses are not use to feeling the rider's bones, muscles, the close contact so it can take time and the rider needs to be balanced and calm. The pad also helps to keep the rider in place by means of it's suede material. Warmly, Caroline
@sonseere10
@sonseere10 8 жыл бұрын
I agree. Sometimes to provide the extra cushion you mentioned, I place two one inch thick wool felt pads together. One is my regular saddle pad. The other is an extra one that I had the saddle shop place webbing on so the cinch can be attached.

Hi Mia and Welcome! Thank you! I follow the great masters of classical dressage. I am also a WE certified instructor. We believe in training the horse from the ground up. This means we develop the horse emotionally, mentally and physically for riding and before we ride. The horse's movement, biomechanics, is developed before the rider rides. This is the only way you can naturally develop a horse through, where the energy comes unimpeded and from the hind end forward. I have a complete training system that teaches it all and how to develop a horse on the ground first so they are strong, balanced and symmetrical. If we don't do it this way, we cannot develop it under saddle. There are too many negative variables working against the horse. If you would like to learn how, or more about what I am talking about please email me directly Caroline@taoofhorsemanship.com.

If I lived close to you, I would love to take lessons. I adopted a Canadian Wild horse in Alberta and just got to ride and practice archery from her back. I trained her mostly by myself without previous knowledge but had good advice from ppl that are trainers. My past experience riding bareback without any knowledge how to ride comes from just being foolish enough to ride here 150km to the place where I kept him. Your courses on KZfaq makes me realize the errors of my ways but helping me to correct my riding. My three-year-old pony is very patient with me and forgives my blunders, but I want to avoid mistakes my lack of proper training creates. The training with her would be an enrichment to my mounted archery efforts if I had your lessons. Where are you located?

There isn't flexibility at that joint but I really miss riding my Snickers and walking is very uncomfortable for me. Doctors said I should but well they are Doctors not horse people...what do you think?

Amazing videos! Thank you for all your knowledge! Are you supposed to keep your heels down or is that just with the saddle?

Hi LuLu and Welcome! Thank you! When riding in a saddle heels down should only be used with hunt seat, hunter/jumper, disciplines where you are in 2 point position. In all other disciplines you should have a level foot, horizontal position with knees slightly turned in and toe slightly turned in. The foot should also be light and relaxed, not pressing down. When riding bareback, the foot is also relaxed and because so the ankle is relaxed allowing the toe to naturally point down. Warmly, Caroline

So, just talking about the spine of the horse. Doesn't riding bareback just concentrate your weight on a few vertebrae on your horses back vs spreading out that weight with a saddle?

Hi CE and Welcome! Great question! I've worked with and ridden thousands of horses in my career, from start to finish, using a bareback pad. Not one ever had a sore back or showed soreness to touch. There are several reasons for this: 1) I am a very balanced rider and sit on my balance point, not my bones; 2. I use my seat to communicate and round the small of my back so my buttocks make the most contact, this offers cushioning and support; 3. I develop the horse's body, muscling and movement BEFORE I ride the movement. This means I am developing their topline muscles to support me as a rider. Bouncing and jarring your body into the horses back is what damages their back and most riders who use a saddle are doing this because they are tense and don't know how to allow the energy of the horses movement to come through them and the horse is tight and jarring to ride for many reasons. I offer online training about how to ride Bitless & Balanced Riding Course: www.taoofhorsemanship.com/bitless-and-balanced-riding-masterclass.

I think we are always tense riding because we are worried about what they are going to spook at and being caught off guard.

Hello Cheryl and Welcome! Yes and I bring that point up in this video. Preparing our horses for the level of riding we want to achieve is very important. If we cannot put the time into them to make them safer find a lesson horse you trust and learn from him. In the end, you aren't learning if you are constantly worried so set yourself up for success and find a horse you can learn best on!
