Do you find it hard to sit the canter? This week, we’re going through the right way to sit and use your muscles to absorb the motion of the canter and master sitting comfortably and smoothly to the rocking horse gait!

People always talk about the “rocking horse motion” of the canter, and how wonderful it is, but when you’re having difficulty mastering the motion of sitting the canter, the canter can feel less like a rocking horse and more like
a car with no suspension!
In this week’s video, Stephanie Seheult is back! We’re going to explain what your seat, spine, and hips need to do in
order to absorb the motion of the three canter beats and allow you to sit comfortably, then you can start to really enjoy the canter, and then be able to control it!
The canter is a three-beat gait as we know, it has an up-beat, a flatbeat, and a down-beat. For you to sit the canter smoothly, your hips and seat need to absorb this motion.
Before we go into the RIGHT way, let me just tell you the wrong way to sit.
- We don’t want the Anterior Tilt. Where your pelvis rotates too far forward and you’re tipping forward. This leaves you using too many back extensors and not enough abdominal
muscle.
- We also don’t want the Posterior Tilt. This is the opposite and leaves you sitting back and pushing too much. Using the wrong abdominal muscles again! (too much six-pack and not enough transverse
abdominal)
The goldilocks of the seating positions is “Neutral spine” and this is the one we want as our base for canter. In Neutral Spine there’s a slight curve in the lumbar and thoracic spines, but this is the natural shape that allows us to absorb shock in the spine. Any other shape won’t allow this!
When absorbing the canter motion with your seat, you allow the seat to move slightly on either side of the neutral spine into posterior and anterior tilt, but with the default spine being the neutral
one.
Watch the video where Stephanie goes into more detail on this, and Mercurio and I demonstrate the WRONG way as well as
the right way!

This is a great video. Thank you for sharing it. I do both. When I start the canter I lean too far forward in my effort to make the transition. When we're in canter, I struggle to not be behind because I need to stay in canter and I drive with my seat. Also, because of my horse's weaker side, I tend to get thrown to the right side. I have a harder time turning left, as you do Amelia, so my partner and I make each other's issue harder. I'm doing floor exercises and Pilates to help. When I get it right in the saddle, I know I've done it right because my right oblique muscles and left hip muscles tell me they've worked harder. Dino is very honest. If I don't position properly for anything, he doesn't step up and say, "Let me help you with that." He says, "Can't we both go back to the stall and eat?" When I do get it right, he says, "Well I guess I don't have an excuse. Let's do this thing! The sooner we're done, the sooner I get my carrot." It can be very frustrating, but I love Dino. My trainer does too. He's making me a better rider and I'm thankful for that! Are those jackets still on your website? I think my trainer would love it if I had one.

Great video. But I think both the rider and the instructor (on the ground) forgot to explain the most important think: What your legs should do. On the First Strike; It is imperative to open two things: Your hip angle and your upper thighs, and to strike your heels down; All the while plastering your belly button to your spine; Then quickly “drop” everything on the Second Beat, or slightly before --- The horse used in this demo is a very calm an obedient horse with rather smooth movement. Just thinking about (or adjusting) your lumbar position is not enough if one happens to be riding a big Stallion with big movement.

Great video Amelia - he’s a lovely dressage horse! For those of us with “green” horses or those learning the basics of dressage….how do you adjust your position in the canter when the horse becomes unbalanced, inverts themself or has a rigid back? Could you please do a video on how to sit the canter with such a horse? This is the canter we are trying to ride and find it challenging to let our hips follow the motion. Your tips & insights would be super helpful! Thx ☺️

Is it possible for you and Stephanie to devise an exercise to show how it feels to use the correct muscles to follow the motion?

I have a damaged lower back L3, L4, L5, S1, S2, S3. It's taken me 5yrs to get back to being able to ride and I am always slightly out of time with my horse - this results in my butt slapping the saddle on occasion. Do you have any tips to help those like me with a "frozen" lower back? Thank you.

So how would I manage the canter if I have a natural hyperlordosis?
@AmeliaNewcombDressage
@AmeliaNewcombDressage 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what that is...

Hyperlordosis is when there’s an increased lumbar curve. It can be due to bad posture , mine is due to a odd shaped sacrum so I can’t get out of anterior tilt

I am not balanced enough to let go of the monkey grip. I am just learning to canter and i feel out of control and I'm so stiff. I have lessons every week and when i start to canter i get a little scared and then tighten up. I am upset with myself that i can't get it. I am an older rider, next birthday 60, so never rode as a kid.

You got this! Sometimes having a grab strap on the front of your saddle can really help especially if you are just learning. I have one on mine just for safety!

I have trouble with bigger movers and am told I drive and move too much. It feels like I’m just scooping along to the motion, but when I see video 😬 it’s like instead of 5-10* of forward/backward motion it’s like 30. Is there a trick to feeling it and correcting it?! My poor horse

I usually like Amelia's posts the the language in this one is not easy to understand. Too technical.

(for example, ordinary folk don't use the words anterior and posterior - that is med school speak!)
