How to ride Medium Trot/Trot Lengthenings
Are you struggling to develop a beautiful and lofty medium trot or trot lengthening? As you move up the levels, you must develop different "gears" in your horse's trot to where you have a “lengthening” and a "medium" version of the gait.
In this week’s video we’re going talk about how to ride both these gait variations in the trot to help you improve your scores in your dressage tests this summer!
The trot lengthening first appears in 1st level, and then medium trot is asked from 2nd Level to Grand Prix. The difference between these is the amount of collection and uphill balance required. However, the basic idea is the same: longer, but not quicker strides!
In order to achieve this length without increasing the speed, the horse needs to be supple, round, and loose through the back.
Here’s some tips to help you execute the trot lengthening and medium trot:
Start on a 20m circle and pick up the trot establishing contact, tempo, and frame on an accurate circle.
Using your calf, start asking the horse for a bigger trot just for a few strides, before bringing them back again with a half-halt-give repetition.
Repeat this process and do the same in the opposite direction.
It’s important to note that this is tough work for your horse, and they need to build muscle to be able to do it correctly and comfortably, so don’t drill this sort of work daily. Instead, work on the suppleness, and basic roundness & throughness of your horse as this builds the foundations from which you can scale up to the stride development work.
Once you are comfortable with this on the circle, you can try it on the diagonal. Here’s the steps to really perfect the trot across the diagonal:
Ride a really good corner.
Get the bend off the leg and then take the time to ride them straight and uphill.
Once they’re in an uphill balance, push on with your leg and develop the medium trot down the diagonal.
If they get strong and you feel a half-halt won’t be enough to bring them back from the medium trot strides, do a circle.
The MOST important thing in the medium trot is the beginning and the end. Go through the corner, get bend, then get them straight and uphill, develop the strides and successfully finish with the half-halt!
Watch the video where I demonstrate this on Mercurio. He has some lovely clearly demonstrable trot lengthening but as you'll see in the video, the correct setup is important to nail the development of the gait. Have a look and let me know in the comments if you find it helpful!
Thanks for watching!

Thank you! That is helpful. I am practicing medium and extended as both are in Third Level Test one which I hope to do this year. I worked on it in a lesson this week. When I finally relaxed my legs and shoulders, while stabilizing with my core, I sat into her and did much better. Now I need to work on my stamina to stay with my mare. She is like a red sportscar and I am finding more gears! :)

Thank you, Amelia! Very helpful, as always! I'd ask you if it is possible to half halt to colect the trot again only by using core, scapula muscles and sit (low sit movement). My horse is a very sensitive one and he doesn't accept "hand in his mouth". Thanks so much

Thank you for your tips and exercises! Horse tends to get kicker but is very good at leg yields and serpentines and snowman etc. Any other suggestion? He does lengthen nicely on the lunge and over poles so it's not a "mechanic" issue. It's a rider issue 😂 aka ME

I am still struggling with my seat, getting her to walk or trot straight, getting her to trot to my leg squeeze. She is a school horse. She responds if I am perfect, but I’m discouraged because I forget to breathe, to do a good half halt… still unsure. My trainer is very patient. I forget all the steps and details!

Hey, thanks for your video. What I am having trouble with is teaching my horse that I want him to increase the size of his steps not the speed. Have tried so many things and not having much success. I know he can do it because when he wants to (ie heading home 🤪) he can do beautiful medium and extended trots but it seems to be only on his terms not mine..... ideas?
@AmeliaNewcombDressage
@AmeliaNewcombDressage 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Andrea, it can be difficult to teach at times. Make sure you're using both the forward and the back. Abd think about it as small amounts first. Don't go for big changes of stride length right away. Even just a little bit is an improvement.

When is the timing of the half halt coming back from the lengthening? Looks like when his inside front was going forward you called the 1/2 halt.

You half-halt when the mane is up!
@dianacolombus
@dianacolombus 11 ай бұрын
When going to the right, are you half halting with the outside rein? If so, is your weight when you ask for it even in your seat bones or are you slightly more weighted in the right seat bone? Is the half halt is working diagonally? This is very confusing because in a right circle, the outside of the horse has to move faster than the inside to make the turn on the circle or in a corner. If I use an outside half halt, I slow the outside down, will the inside hind leg still come under the horse to his center of gravity. Upper thigh asks for turn after half halt?

My Grand Prix school master horse has a very big lofty stride that is difficult for me to sit and keep him on the bit at the extended as we enter third level. My instructor says to just do a medium twice. Your thoughts?
@AmeliaNewcombDressage
@AmeliaNewcombDressage Жыл бұрын
This is super common with schoolmasters and their students. Remember that the trot has a swing to it and allow your body to move. When you are with the horse you won't bounce. Many riders stiffen up in the extended trying to make their body still and it is the exact opposite of what you need to do!
