Thanks for the video, Damien. One part that I'm very interested in learning and I think you left out is the very beginning when you're about to get out and need to climb on the board and go against the waves and white water. The other is how to recover once you fall inside the break zone. Great video either way, very helpful to see what's happening from the beach while you are talking through it. 🙂

Thanks so much guys for making another helpful video...definitely motivating me for the next wave day. I thought it was especially helpful to have the step by step commentary and when Gwen was riding and the video perspective was from the beach it made it easy to understand what he was describing. Thank you both for always being so friendly and kind.

Today was the first time in big swell for me, too be honest overpowered, but now I understand that lift from the swell, I kept breaching and wondered why, now I understand. Another great video. Thanks guys. Be nice if you mentioned conditions and equipment used in the description for reference.

Thanks guys - just what the doctor ordered! Never even considered foil height 🤯 Something new to work on… 😎 Wonder if a 95 mast is a little long for my early attempts - have been keeping the foil deep to avoid breaching when catching the lift… 🤦🏼‍♂️

great video. a question: do one has to change hands when changing direction on the wave? i'm asking because you ride almosrt exclusively UPWIND, which stabilizes the wing

When I ride my beginner kit in the waves my foil (RRD 1750cm) breaches quite often then I crash. Never happens going out, only coming back. Do I need a smaller foil or just keep practicing?

Great video, I’d love to hear a video on foil selection in waves. Yesterday Inwent out in big waves and had a 950 (I’m 95KG) and the speed and control was perfectly matched to the wave height, speed and period. Then I went for a smaller foil, that a little faster and twitchier…..I’m wondering if it was my skill level or foil selection that was wrong to make the smaller foil feel not uncomfortable in the bigger waves.
@DamienLeroyYouTube
@DamienLeroyYouTube 15 күн бұрын
A smaller foil will require you to be more in the powerful part of the wave to generate more speed, smaller foils are more technical to ride in waves for sure. So if the 950 was perfect, I would recommend riding it more to get used to reading the wave and positioning yourself on the wave better :)

Thanks for the video and the great tips. I am using a Moses 790 front wing and working to catch my first river rolling waves. It is possible to ride waves with this low aspect wing or is it a must to use a high aspect wing for the catching a rolling wave.
@DamienLeroyYouTube
@DamienLeroyYouTube Жыл бұрын
You can ride waves with low aspect for sure but since they have more drag they will want to slow down and come off foil easier than a high aspect foil with more efficiency and glide.

Great video that I have watched several times now. I just picked up on the nuance of what you are talking about related to being high to be in the lift. Questions: what is this location you are doing this? When you say "stay in the lift" does that mean if my foil is low on the wave, there is less lift or are you talking about the momentum of the wave? I'm a pilot so I'm trying to understand the difference. Is it correct that the momentum of the wave and your position on the wave is creating the energy for the lift? Kind of like riding down a hill? Thanks for the timely video. Hope to see you in FL at some point. Joe. North TX Wing Foilers

Location is Jupiter, FL. Yes foil lower in the wave is less lift if you are on a little piece of chop. Yes you are spot on. If I am at the bottom of the hill no lift going down the hill or more at the top their is lots of lift. Think of it like ridge soaring, the most lift is at the top! I hope that helps....
@joect9541
@joect9541 2 жыл бұрын
@@DamienLeroyKZfaq Definitely helps! I'm also a paraglider that ridge soars so that analogy rings true. (If we ever meet, I have questions about your experience with that.... glad you are alive!!) My brother lives on Merritt Island so that's where I would go. There's a guy named Dean that was in N TX that now wings near the Pineda Causeway. I don't know if they get the same swells up there. Keep up the great work! Love all your videos especially with Harry. I'm 61 and watching him is what convinced me to try winging.

Thank you! Quick question - how to know when I’m at the limit of the foil (too high)…the nose of my board actually dived in and it was scary to feel too high…thx for advice
@DamienLeroyYouTube
@DamienLeroyYouTube Жыл бұрын
Well that is more of time on the water to get used to the height and not breaching or coming up to far. I would try to just keep the board just off the water when on foil and you will have less breaching as you are constantly staying lower. It comes with time on the water really!

Still wondering what you guys are using to catch those sized waves. I have a Naish 1800 HA but it feels sluggish and tough to get lift from small waves. Maybe I"m doing something wrong.
@DamienLeroyYouTube
@DamienLeroyYouTube Жыл бұрын
Its always hard to be in the perfect spot for LIFT on a wave, but make sure you are higher up on foil! If your mast is really low in the water your wing might not be taping into the LIFT. of the wave if the swell is small! A little higher aspect will help on the drag, more glide, smaller FOIL and a smaller tail wing all helps eliminate drag, but it all gets twitchier.

When riding the wave downwind, how do you prevent over running your wing? Do you have to switch hands?
@DamienLeroyYouTube
@DamienLeroyYouTube Жыл бұрын
If you go faster than the wind, then the wing will naturally come behind you as if the wind was coming in front of you. The tricky one is if you go same speed as the wind, then the wing will wander a bit more, and at that point, you hold it up more than letting it fly in the wind. Hope this helps!

is it safe to wing foil with offshore wind?
@DamienLeroyYouTube
@DamienLeroyYouTube 2 жыл бұрын
It is for the more experienced as the wind is more gusty but worst case is you paddle back in. I would say if you are new its not the best idea. If you are a more avid rider, test it out but remember your limits. Only go as far as you want to swim back just in case.
