This is a great one. I just ripped my entire library over the last 6 weeks using your older videos as guides. Started with an ASUS BD-R drive, but returned that one and switched to the LG. The ASUS was scratching my discs. Anyway, I used MKVToolNix to multiplex the mkv files when removing subtitle tracks I didn't want (after MakeMKV did its thing), relabeled things and even did the split after chapter and appending for episodes of Lost that are recognized by Plex and Zidoo as separate or combined episodes. But, I don't know why, it totally slipped my mind that I could do this merging of MKV files for LOTR Extended Editions or The Hobbit 3D Extended Editions. I'm combining them now and then gonna throw them back up on the Synology NAS! Thanks for your videos!

*Do not* use nvenc or other gpu encoding. It is designed for livestreaming (ie. speed) and not high quality encoding. Downsizing and compressing 4k movies to 1080p works really well with h.265 (passthrough metadata in handbrake should always be turned on for hdr ) and if you have your original discs, you can always convert them again when the next big compression standard comes out. There are lots of topics to discuss... ie, if you convert to h.265 for Plex server, and your TV does not have h.265 decode ability, your server will need to do a re-encode to a format the device supports. Handbrake could probably have a series of videos to review all of the options and how to use them correctly.
@TwoGuyzTech
@TwoGuyzTech 2 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching! Indeed it is a very complicated topic. I've had good luck with NVENC (Gen 7 on Ampere) at a glance the output is pretty decent, but I haven't viewed it on an HDR display, and it's by no means the most optimal solution. We hope to take a really deep dive into this (and real time transcoding for streaming) quite soon!
@GetOffMyyLawn
@GetOffMyyLawn 2 ай бұрын
@@TwoGuyzTech in my experience it is very blocky. The focus of nvenc is quick encoding and quick decoding. Unfortunately to get a quality encode in the smallest file is a slow process. You should keep up on this series... the information available is all over the place and giving new comers a series of videos to get started is great... keep it up!

@@charlesdoesmore5488 I usually use h.265 10 bit, constant framerate, encoder preset slower, constant quality 22. It will make your cpu run full blast, and will take a long time. If you don't care about file size, then just use the instructions to create mkv files straight from the disc.

The mist difficult thing I found at least a few years ago was encoding/compression of 4K HDR to maintain support for the most amount of playback devices and not losing certain HDR features. For instance maintaining playback of dolby vision, HDR10+, and HDR10 with proper failover for what the playback device supports. Requires special consideration to the HDR profiles and settings used for H265 encoding. Idk of they've sort of streamlined it now.

Eh once you've done it a couple times and developed a workflow it's pretty simple. Especially if you're just doing movies that don't need subtitles. Rip it, rename it, recompress it using a preset, drag the finished movie to your Plex folder, repeat for however many you have, delete any leftover files at the end and hit scan on your Plex library.

But it just made another copy of the film when i click on the multiplexing button and still has the vlc player original orange cone. Is there a special codex to use for vlc player to recognise the new cover picture or does this only work if i use K-Lite Codec Pack and player and don't use vlc player.

Dropping an uncompressed mkv in Plex will cause your Plex server to transcode the file every time you play it. Although it's nice to transcode only from an uncompressed source like that, I prefer to pre-encode my videos to something that won't get transcoded as much. I think Plex only supports direct play for 4k videos in mp4 format only. Also, Handbrake is only the beginning...once you start learning avisynth, that's a whole new rabbit hole on how to encode your videos. ;)

Dolby vision is retained by MakeMKV, but you can only stream it with a device capable of streaming DV Profile 7. Normal streaming apps use DV Profile 5. The NVIDIA Shield is one of these, as well as many TVs these days. Xbox S|X and PS5 cannot stream this profile of DV. If you process the video through handbrake, however, DV is lost completely and only HDR10 is retained.

I'll have to check out the MKV tool you demonstrated, is there anything that helps identify the episode titles after using MKV?
@kameoosama
@kameoosama 2 ай бұрын
You kinda just need to open em in VLC and check em. Typically whatever show you're watching will have a title after the opening credits but sometimes you have to look at the next episode preview if there is one, or sometimes you just have to compare against the synopsis on TVDB. Most of the time the episodes are arranged sequentially and then I can just use PowerRename to put the proper episode numbers on. I also occasionally use filebot to put the titles on but it doesn't work super well if the episodes aren't numbered right in the first place
@ambientoverlord
@ambientoverlord 2 ай бұрын
Not automatically. But the easiest way to determine the episode structure on the disc is to look at the "Source File Name" of each file that MakeMKV detects. You can see it over on the right hand side in this video but he doesn't mention it. The smallest number is the first episode on the disc, and the episodes increase numerically from there. Sometimes it'll skip several numbers at a time, but as long as you name the files sequentially, you're good. This has only been true for Blu-Ray TV show sets in my experience. DVDs are almost always already in order top to bottom, but you can still use this method to double check.

about chapters in a single mkv for tv shows. dunno about blurays, but dvds often have such large file with all the episodes on a disc crammed into one with chapters. problem is, sometimes theres a chapter for intro, few chapters per episode, then outro is also a chapter and so on. meaning, sometimes you cant split that large file per chapters since youll end up with gajillion files and its timeconsuming to glue all those together to get mkvs per episode. as i said, dunno about blurays but i do run into such cases with dvds of tv shows. thats why i always deselect that file since there are files for individual episodes also available as well, always.
@TwoGuyzTech
@TwoGuyzTech 2 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching! Splitting by specific chapters as I showed in the video with MKVToolNix would help in this case. Having a single track split by chapters (without other tracks available) is mostly applicable to Blu-ray releases of TV series from other countries, but that's just the account of others who have ran into this same issue that I've helped in the past.
@kameoosama
@kameoosama 2 ай бұрын
They cover this in the vid. Instead of selecting to split by chapters, there's a "before chapters" option that lets you give a comma separated list of what chapter each episode starts on. Usually it's a regular cadence like 6,11,16,21,26, etc so after you've seen a couple you can just extrapolate out and spot check the last few. There are a few discs that have both episodes by title and a glommed-together one at the end, but usually it's one or the other

Oh yeah, there are a couple anime in 'SD-BD' format I have. Standard Definition video on a Blu-ray, so you have 50+ episodes crammed on just one or two discs. And the company that put those out likes to do all their discs as one sequential title so yeah once I looked at the first couple I just did the sequential counting I mentioned out to like chapter 100-something and checked the chapter numbers I had projected for the last couple in VLC to make sure there wasn't like, an extra chapter somewhere causing drift before I split it out. Saved a ton of time versus checking every single episode. I keep that chapter list sitting in my notepad++ buffer since it tends to work for everything else they do too, although I generally only need like the first third

Alright, here's a couple of questions. The first, I already know the answer... How to merge seacam, PAL and ntsc? The answer, would be to first trim of copyright marks (say, MediaBlasters vs Funimation) and changing the timing of the audio tracks so they all match. The second question: How to make an MKV play different video chapters, depending on the audio tracks? (In Finding Dory, the aquarium signage changes to match the spoken language) What about the same, but for regions? (If the Blu-ray player is physically in Japan, then add a mosaic overlay during "naughty" scenes. If the player is NOT in Japan, then the raw video is played.

Hey TwoGuyzTech. Can you clarify something for me? I thought that in order to play/use the UHD functions of an UHD Blu Ray drive, you needed to be using a PC with a specific Intel CPU that supported the instruction set (Intel SGX). From what I've heard, no AMD CPU will work for grabbing 4K Blu Ray discs. Is that the case or have you found this to be false?

I don't know if you can help me in the reply or make a video or do both about two different things I have questions on one what about some subtitle tool that I'm able to label different subtitles to identify which ones audio commentary or something in a different language sometimes there's multiple audio commentarys and I would like to label that stuff. Also the other thing if you could help me out with is the proper file naming with some kind of tool so Plex can see the files in its database because a lot of times it won't recognize the file to show up and Plex. If you can help me with that and or make a video that would be awesome. PS I did use filebot, but I'm looking for something that's free or doesn't have a subscription okay thank you!

If you're recompressing the file you can do this via handbrake, the audio tracks by default are folded in half and you can just hit a < looking mark on the right hand side to see the track name field. You can change it even if you're using passthrough. The subtitle tracks also have a name field to change and you can add extra tracks or change around the order or set one as default or even burn one in if you need. If you're not recompressing then there's an MKV header editor in MKVtoolnix which just lists out all the tracks and lets you change any property you want. If you need to do this for a bunch of similar tracks at once you can write a batch script that uses mkvpropedit (MKVtoolnix is really a frontend for mkvpropedit) and I do this a lot for anime TV series processing. Kinda just take the same one and make minor edits like switching which sub track is full subtitles and which one has onscreen text translations only.

As far as the Plex stuff you just need to follow the guides they provide but if you're following exactly but your show or movie has a generic name and supplying the years and everything still gets it mismatched then there's a part in their page on naming your media that explains how to add a tag with the exact IMDB/TMDB/TVDB ID number and a few of mine have this. It also explains how to tag stuff like a single movie split across multiple files, a single file with multiple episodes (useful with stuff like cartoons where multiple episodes are presented as a single episode with only one Opening and End credits) and there's a separate page for what to do if you want to put bonus features for a show or movie. As far as renaming stuff, I honestly just used Notepad++ and PowerRename for years, and when I finally did get filebot I usually still have to use PowerRename first to get the episode numbers right
@GamerFromJump
@GamerFromJump 2 ай бұрын
You shouldn’t have to include Chapter 1 when splitting; MKVToolNix assumes that chapter 1-x, where x is the chapter before the split prior to the next episode, is episode 1.

Blu-Ray discs are 1080p (1920 x 1080). There's no such thing as a "4K Blu-Ray" disc. Blu-Ray and so-called "4K Ultra HD" are different formats. It's like VHS vs BETA. No discs are 4K, either. All so-called "4K Ultra HD" discs are actually UHD. Companies are lying when they claim their movies, on disc, are in 4K. LG do make reliable drives, but they're all region-locked. At least that's the case here in Australia. I even wrote to them about it, after I found out my LG Blu-Ray drive wouldn't play discs from different regions. They don't advertise that their drives are locked, either, so even people selling them don't know. I informed LG that people are entitled to a refund for those drives, because they are not fit for purpose (the legal term). That's because, in Australia, we have the legal right to buy and play media from anywhere in the world. We also have the legal right to make as many copies of that media, for personal use, so long as we retain the original discs. LG never replied to that email.

I have a recommendation for your next video down the line sometime.. 😉 To show how to properly have Plex/Jellyfin/Emby setup/configured in order to playback the mkv rip as the director intended. I mean how to send the audio track directly to the receiver for decoding and have the TV/PC/media streamer play the movie in the correct frame rate. It took me a long time to figure it out and at the end when I thought I had it, I realized that apparently I have to change the refresh rate on my PC manually to 24Hz, which then sets that on my projector. All and all it’s a pain in the ass as Plex never remembers these settings and it has to be changed manually every time when I sit down to watch something from my Plex library. So I invested $250 in a dedicated media streamer - Zidoo Z9X pro and completely stopped using and removed Plex, as Zidoo plays all video files and remembers to send audio direct to the receiver and matches the frame rates as well with ease! Also be sure to mention the Apple TV and no atmos playback in the Plex app or Infuse, I stopped using it as well. Zidoo to the rescue! It costs only $50 more than the Nvidia shield but is not as outdated - the reason I didn’t and never got to own a shield. 🤷‍♂️ Otherwise what good is a Blu-Ray rip if we can’t watch it as the Blu-Ray player would play it back on any system ... 🤔 Thx for your videos!!

Thank you very much for the comment! This is largely the reason why we started using a Zidoo player in our theater as well. The SHIELD also sends the original Dolby ATMOS track to our processor through the Plex and Jellyfin apps but it's really nice not having to rely on an extra server-side component to send the movies over the network as with the Zidoo. We might dive into this topic deeper in another video!

I absolutely love my Zidoo Z9X Pro. I just spent the last 6 weeks ripping my entire Blu-ray library (3D, 4K, & HD) to my new Synology NAS and used the Zidoo to customize my posters, fanart (backgrounds), clearlogos, theme music, collections, poster labels, etc. The Zidoo supports ISOs, MKV, 3D MVC, native frame rates, resolutions, HDR, Atmos, DTS-X, pretty much everything. Today, I learned that you can side-load Plex onto the Zidoo (It's called ZidooPlexMod). It was really cool setting it up and having it use the Zidoo player to play back the video. This means that it supports all of the Zidoo playback functionality. It's funny, because I started watching a movie using Plex, stopped the movie, went into Zidoo's Home Theater 4.0 app and it saved my progress from Plex. It was in my Recent category and everything. Started playing the movie and it started from where Plex stopped. Pretty cool.

Lots of reasons. Once it's on the NAS, it can be accessed from any room in the house. Also, if you set up a Plex server and give it access remotely, you can access your library anywhere in the world on your mobile devices. It's like having your own personal Netflix. I'm also going to give my friend in another city access to my Plex and we can use the "Watch together" feature. So we can watch Breaking Bad and The Sopranos at the same time.

I'm still trying to proactively understand this as well. A shelf of 40 4k Blu-rays will take up so much less space than a server/hard drive storage area.
@ckenisell
@ckenisell 2 ай бұрын
@@The1Music2MyEarsperhaps the pictures of NAS devices online are deceiving, but my 8-bay NAS is much smaller than 40 Blu-ray cases stacked against each other. And I'm only using 3 of the 8 bays currently. A 4-bay NAS would be nearly half the size of the 8-bay. Having said that, it's not about the space (because I still have the Blu-rays I ripped. It doesn't really decrease storage space, I outlined the advantages in my previous response. Still, NAS + hard drives + Gigibit ethernet infrastructure aren't cheap and definitely aren't for everyone.

@The1Music2MyEars 2 ай бұрын
@@ckenisell Got it. What's the total storage space you have?
@ckenisell
@ckenisell 2 ай бұрын
@@The1Music2MyEars Three 20 TB drives. Since one of the three is saved for redundancy, that gives me just under 40 TB of space. I have ripped my entire library of about 400 movie titles and about 8 full TV series runs (a combination of HD BDs, 3D BDs and 4K BDs) and have used about 75% to 80% of the storage. I am also going to use Synology Photos and Synology Drive apps to replace Google Photos and Google Drive. Once it gets closer to 90-95%, just buy another 20TB drive, slide it in and the storage expands automatically. If one drive fails, I don't lose any data. Replace the drive and I am back to having the redundancy failsafe. If two drives fail at once, I lose everything.
