I love how when you saw him struggling with the spokeshave, you got this twinkle in your eye and I could SEE it.. you had a look "I get to teach Victor something today" Then you took the tool and showed him exactly how you do it. I guarantee he learned a couple things. I usually do when I watch you. That's the thing I appreciate about you most. You love to teach. Thank you.

I don't use an ax as much as I used to. Age got me. But lots of folks around here and myself would wrap a thick layer of cowhide around the handle where it meets the head. Had a guy do mine. He put one layer around the bottom, like saddle. Then another all the way up the sides and laced it with a leather thong. He soaked it in varnish to protect the leather and let it dry. It was light and it worked!! Never broke a handle again.

Buckin, I’ve watched you for more than 10yrs. Always good info. For the last 50 +yrs I have mixed a 50/50 mix of linseed oil and paint thinner in a pint jar and painted (slopped, until it runs off) as much onto all of my wooden handles used or not, as possible yearly, it extends the useful life of the implement handle. I keep them under cover. The paint thinner thins the linseed oil and allows much penetration, the paint thinner will evaporate leaving the linseed oil to harden keeping the moisture out. I even paint the implement head, which keeps it from rusting. Keep up the excellent work.

I have a long handled shovel that I owned for like 30 years\, never did any maintenance on it, handle dried out and cracked, but because of Buckin I gave it like 6 coats of the big W and the handle is solid, cracks completely filled and I've left it out side for a few years now with no further maintenance and it is still solid.

First time I’ve heard of Watco. I’ll look into it. I’m new to axe refurbishing so I used what I had on hand. I used some pine tar. Heated up the handle with a torch. Rubbed it in. Then a light coating of beezwax. Lasted for years and years. And the best smell ever eveytime you use it. Thanks for the channel. Would love to see a special on that CJ-7 in the background.

Hey Billy I love your channel bud keep it up. I’m a tree guy from Oakland County Michigan. I have a brother in arms that I served with in a combat infantry company during operation Iraqi freedom about a decade ago. He’s also a tree guy out of Vermont. We both are company owners who share the passion of tree work. We both make the long 15 hour trip from state to state to reunite to do tree work and learn from each other. Our brotherhood was forged in the fire of combat and our passion for tree work is one I know you understand. All that being said We are due to go out to his neck of the woods this November and I think it would be great if I could perches one of your beautiful axes for him. Maybe get one for myself as well. Just because I couldn’t let him out due me lol. How would I go about making this a reality? Thanks a bunch and stay safe bud.
