Can you please speak to the differences between 65D and 57D? I see they’re similar but I’m curious when you might go with the 57 other than a slightly longer pot life.

Been looking for an answer to this too
@smoothon5 ай бұрын
Hey there, the 57D is a bit softer than the 65D but the major difference is going to be the color of the material. The 57D is a translucent white while the 65D is white when cured. I like the 57D as I can add color to it and will achieve the color that I am adding to the material. The 57D being softer allows it to me a little more durable than the 65D. If you have any specific questions about the materials you can send our tech team a ticket and they can further assist you. www.smooth-on.com/support/ticket/add/agree/ Thanks for watching!

Hello Brian Oltrogge, reviewed your very well presented video on slush casting using smooth-on 65D. Please share your thoughts/advice with brush application of the 65D resin say with the URE-FIL11 filler into shallow relief sculptures. BTW, I recently cast several small (fist size) sculptures using the smooth-on 300 product. Am most pleased with the results. Have sanded them and will clean, prime and acrylic paint in time. In terms of safety I noticed you used a respirator when power tooling the edge of your cast. Is one recommended when hand or machine sanding the resins? When hand sanding the 300 I found the particles slightly heavy ( not air bourne) and I simply blew them away. I am in a very well ventilated working space. Roy Carter

Hi, this is my second comment on your channel. This time I would like to know if parts of a motorbike like plastic fairings and panniers could be made and if so, what would be the procedure using your products. 4 weeks ago I fell from my motorbike due to bad weather and some plastic parts were broken so I am interested to know how to replicate said parts from scratch.

Would you please explain which characteristic on a material's technical bulletin makes it cure more gradually rather than snap-cure?

If you add a thickener such as Ure-Fil 9, it will make the resin more opaque.

1. Can this resin be painted with acrylic paint? 2. If i have a closed mold, can i rotocast with only one layer? 3. What is the maximum humidity level for working environment, for the resin to not foam up badly? My country is quite humid, Smooth-cast 321, 300, foam up badly.
@smoothon7 жыл бұрын
1) Yes, but I'd recommend looking over our detailed painting recommendations here: www.smooth-on.com/support/faq/141/ 2) You still want to build up a few layers to strengthen the casting. Generally with a closed mold on a rotocast machine, a rubber plug is used to seal the pour spout. After each layer, the resin at the spout is cut open so that the next batch can be poured. You can see this process in action here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kJmAkpeirrycfIU.html 3) 50% or less is recommended. If humidity is hard to control, you will want to use fast setting resins and always use a dry gas blanket like our XTEND-IT when storing opened containers. You might also see if you can switch to a castable epoxy for some projects, as moisture doesn't cause foaming in epoxy.
@cwtjones7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for prompt reply. Yes i have a rubber plug that is part of the mold. The reason i am worry for the foaming of resin is, even SmoothCast 300 will foam if i don't use pressure pot. And, with such a short pot life, it is almost impossible for me to get the resin and mold into the pressure pot, so i stick to Smooth-Cast 321 all the time, with pressure pot. Usually i have 5 to 6 molds to pour which fit into the pressure pot. ** Working with fast resin almost certain to bring up my blood pressure :D I have limited control over the humidity as i work in open area. So once i open a gallon set, i try my best to cast all 6.9kg of resin within 3 days. Once i am done i use a new rubber glove and wrap over the lid then fasten with rubber band. The first 2 to 3 cast are usually fine without pressure pot. After that it get worse and i have to proceed with pressure pot. May i know, is Smooth-Cast 65D also as sensitive as Smooth-Cast 321 series?

Do I need the URE-FIL 11 if I am just casting into a mold and not rotocasting? And after the resin has finished hardening, is it safe to hold in your hands for long periods? Trying to find something tough but droppable for making a custom hand-held gaming system, and I know most use ABS, so would this be similar?

It is safe to handle once cured, and URE-FIL 11 would not be necessary if casting solid.

Thanks. From comparison chart, the 321 and Onyx are harder and stronger. Is that it? 321 can be used for rotocasting too? Thanks
@smoothon7 жыл бұрын
321 has a snap cure - as opposed to the gel cure of 65D. Gel cure materials work better for rotocasting.
@smoothon7 жыл бұрын
This is an extreme, non scientific test. The lower the hardness of the resin is, the better the impact resistance is. 65D is softer than 321, therefore it has a higher impact resistance.
