+Letitia Jacob Hi Letitia and Welcome! Congrats on your opportunity with your new horse! Your situation is complicated due to your horse being a former WP show horse? or school horse. So often school horses and show horses get "sour" towards the work because there hasn't been any meaning or purpose for them. They are talented and eager to please and do the work and then it gets abused and over used and drilled. I've worked with many ex or former show horses, many who won and were broken down (spirit) before they were 10 yrs old. They lost their luster and their eye was dull because they had checked out a long time ago. Perhaps your mare is still there and her spirit is intact. Sounds like it:) She also has a new "leaf" on life with you. You care and listen to her. She is free to speak her mind and not be forced into doing things she doesn't see purpose in. Right now the round pen represents all those things she doesn't like. You need to work on developing the bond, relationship, so that she wants to be with you enough to trust you AND you need to work on earning her respect. No matter how much you love her she still won't go. You need to work with her through specific exercises that develop the bond and level of respect you need. It all comes down to a balance of love and leadership (relationship and respect). I offer many long distance teaching and training opportunities should you be interested. Hi Tripsten and Welcome! There can be many factors contributing, causing, a horses anxiety in the round pen. Most likely, the round pen is a trigger, past memory from a bad experience in the pen. If they speed up and act out it often indicates they are emotionally and physically imbalanced. Hi Rebecca!!! So great to see you on my channel! When assessing a horse's reaction or behavior I always watch their expression. When Lovey comes in and stands with me (around 19:40) and stomps she is relaxed and her ears and eyes are relaxed and soft. She hates flies (typical OTTB - thin skin!) and does this often. Now, if we were standing around under saddle during one of my clinics and she stomps, it's usually because she is bored and frustrated. Standing is still new for her and learning patience and tolerance is part of it! Yes, Lovey was named Lovey because she is one of the sweetest, most loving horses I've ever met! This size has worked best and for the following reasons: not too small where it will stress a larger horse physically; has enough space so you are not on top of a horse that is more anxious and feels defensive, threatened when working like this; allows for riding; any bigger and you will be moving too much should you have to develop a lazy horse's work ethic. especially with mares, I feel like force and dominance doesnt work the same with mares, even if trainers use it they know the results they are getting, but most people do not and mention about aggressive, mean, moody, dangerous mares. Mares are more intuitve much like any hot breed they feel your energy and emotions, mares really dont like aggressive treatment, most of the people who complain about their mares use aggressive treatment, and i just dont think they get the point of the techniques being used and instead use it to like force the aggression and respect out of a mare which Never Ever Works.

Many mares are actually extremely sweet, just very mishandled, obviously their are trainers with some of these methods who know what they are achieving dont complain about mares, but most people dont understand it. I am no horse expert, but I know one thing is wrong and that is how people handle mares a lot of the time and the bad wrap they get. They are extremely sweet they want to understand and trust, as well as feel comfortable with you and if you give them this they will always help and take care of you when they need it. I love the heart of mares.

Like I remember a horse, a saddlebred mare, this one lady said she is a b'tch, this horse would either take care of you or choose to do what she wanted instead, super smart horse, this lady was like grumbling, like we dont get along, mean while she's like slapping things around, brushing her real hard, just everything with brute force and her energy was very negative. Broadway was just getting frusterated, aggressive, etc, and shes moving around, threatening to bite, kind of moving her hind legs and just like did not what to be touched by this lady at all. I first thought. who is the btch. Look how you are handling her? Mares are so smart, and they are nurturers as well as parents often times, so why dont we nurture them. Be a back bone for them as well. Yet this same mare is super gentle towards kids, but she is very smart.

i hear even sometimes trainers, mentioning or people mention about "signs of their mare showing meanness or aggression and people dont say the samething about geldings, and I think well maybe you are just misunderstanding her reactions due to Mare Stereotypes,

i think too myself when they say this,... i dont think that is what she is doing, but okay.
